Watch: Stetson Bennett walks Eli Manning through 4th quarter of national championship win

This is epic. #GoDawgs

This may wind up being your favorite video you watch all week. I mean…former walk-on Stetson Bennett tossing a football with Eli Manning, talking him through the fourth quarter of Georgia’s national title win over Alabama. Does it get better than that?

The clip, which is part of an ESPN series called “Eli’s Places” in an episode titled “Walk-Ons,” starts by pointing out the fact that Bennett was the first walk-on quarterback ever to start in a college football national championship game.

Bennett runs Manning through the entire fourth quarter of Georgia’s 33-18 win, describing the key plays, his emotions and what he was telling his teammates on the sideline prior to Kelee Ringo’s interception.

Bennett walks Manning through his 40 yard touchdown pass he threw to true freshman AD Mitchell to give UGA a 19-18 lead with 8:09 on the clock.

“Dish-Jet-Red-Left-Both-Seam-Go on Tuesday” is the name of the play that turned Mitchell into a UGA legend forever.

“They (Alabama) jumped,” Bennett told Manning, recalling the play. “Cook made a great block. I knew I was going to AD. It was one-on-one, he was deep. I saw them jump and I was like ‘I’m going to my guy #5 out there.’ He went up there and made a great play.”

But for Bennett, there was still work to do. Georgia would get the ball back at its own 38 yard line, leading 19-18, with just over seven minutes to go. Georgia ran the ball four straight times and then Alabama was called for a pass interference to move the Dawgs to the Bama 24 yard line. A seven yard run by Zamir White was followed by a two yarder from James Cook. That’s when Bennett, also known as the “Mailman,” truly delivered, completed his first pass of the drive and made it an eight point game with his 15 yard touchdown pass to Brock Bowers with 3:33 to go put Georgia up 26-18.

“We score on the next drive,” Bennett said, referring to the Bowers touchdown. “But they get the ball back and there’s around a minute left and it’s eight points, and you know, they have the Heisman Trophy winner (Bryce Young). So I’m making my rounds, I’m talking to the o-line. I’m saying ‘Hey, keep your mind ready because we might have to go down with 20 seconds to get a field goal to win the national championship.’

“It’s third down,” Bennett continues. “Kelee intercepts the ball. And then all the sudden, this weight I didn’t even know was on my shoulders just fell off. And I just start crying.

It was just a whirlwind, I’m giving everybody hugs, they’re hugging me. It was beautiful. I love it.”

Beautiful it was. Bennett, Ringo, Bowers, Mitchell and the rest of that 2021 national championship team will forever go down as legends in the UGA history books.

Ranking Heisman Trophy contenders after Week 4 of college football

Ranking the top 25 Heisman contenders after Week 4 – here comes UGA TE Brock Bowers

In most cases, the Heisman Trophy is a quarterback’s award. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young looks to repeat in 2022 but he has stiff competition from Ohio State’s CJ Stroud, USC’s Caleb Williams, Georgia’s Stetson Bennett and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker.

This week’s rankings include guys who are putting up wild numbers. Players like Illinois running back Chase Brown, Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim, Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels and Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. There’s the defensive studs, like sack machine Jacoby Windmon of Michigan State and Drew Sanders of Arkansas. And then there’s Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who I’d argue is the best all-around offensive player in America.

Best Week 4 prop bets for Kent State-Georgia

UGA Wire lays out the best prop bets for this nonconference tilt.

After blasting South Carolina last Saturday in Columbia, the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (3-0) return home to battle Kent State (1-2) between the hedges.

The defense has looked as dominant as last season with a total of 10 points surrendered in three games. The Golden Flashes likely won’t fare any better than the three previous opponents did.

UGA QB Stetson Bennett has gotten off to a hot start and he could find himself among the Heisman Trophy contenders by season’s end if his play keeps up. As long as his top weapon, Brock Bowers keeps scoring touchdowns, he could be right up there as well.

(Watch and stream the game live on ESPN+)

The Bulldogs will be a heavy favorite by the time kickoff arrives and the starters are likely sitting for most of the second half.

Bryce Young holds off C.J. Stroud in Week 3’s Heisman Poll

Bryce Young continues to lead the way.

The college football season is roughly a quarter of the way through after Week 3 came to a conclusion on Saturday.

With the conclusion of last week’s games, the College Wire’s site editors once again voted on the Heisman Poll. In this week’s edition you will find the usual suspects such as Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Caleb Williams, and Stetson Bennett. This week saw the return of Dillon Gabriel to the poll after the Sooners throttled Nebraska on Saturday. Three new quarterbacks joined the poll for the first time.

As far as the non-quarterbacks, we have Bijan Robinson leading the way after a dominating performance against UTSA and Will Anderson nipping at his heels. Brock Bowers became the first tight end to be named to the poll after his performance against South Carolina.

Each editor picked their top three choices with the top candidate receiving five points, the second choice receiving three points, and the final choice receiving one point.

We break down how each of our 13 candidates fared in the poll, ties are listed in alphabetical order.

College Wire’s SEC top performers in Week 3

After another week of college football action in the SEC, our conference team editors weighed in on the top performers.

During Week 3 action around the conference, the SEC finished 9-1 in nonconference action. The lone loss came from the Auburn Tigers, who were blasted at home by Penn State 41-12.

There were also two conference matchups with the Georgia Bulldogs and LSU Tigers coming out victorious against the South Carolina Gamecocks and Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The SEC enjoyed far more success than failure when it comes to winning football games. With Week 3’s contests firmly in the books, the SEC editorial team at the College Wire voted on their top performers.

He’s so highly regarded, that Poppell Farms in Odum, Ga, created a 10-acre maze as an homage to Bennett.

Ranking SEC quarterbacks after Week 2: There’s a new No. 1

There’s a new No. 1 in our SEC QB rankings following Week 2

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, entered Week 2 as the favorite to win the award again this season. But following a performance that left a bit to be desired vs. Texas, Young will have some ground to make up if he hopes to repeat in 2022.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett has looked like the best passer in the league through two weeks this year and despite not yet playing a full 60 minutes in his first two games, he is still second in the conference in yards with 668. A weak performance from Florida passer Anthony Richardson dropped the Gators’ quarterback in our rankings this week as his team fell to Will Levis and Kentucky. Meanwhile, Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker and Arkansas‘ KJ Jefferson continue to impress and both had big-time wins over the weekend.

We ranked every SEC quarterback following their Week 1 performance.

Heisman Trophy odds 2022: CJ Stroud stays on top, Bryce Young slides and Caleb Williams continues to surge

Stetson Bennett is the favorite no one is talking about enough

Each week this college football season, BetFTW will take a look at the 2022 Heisman Trophy race and break down the contenders. Check back each Monday as the best college football players in the country jockey for position with both oddsmakers and bettors. Preseason odds can be found here and odds after Week 1 here.

The good news about already carrying one Heisman Trophy on your college resume is that a single off game against an unranked opponent won’t completely tank your chances to repeat. Bryce Young (+400) did slide a bit after No.1  Alabama’s near-disaster against Texas, but only enough to make him a bit more valuable for bettors.

Let’s dig into the contenders heading into Week 3.
