Former Oregon WR commit Stephon Johnson enters transfer portal

Stephon Johnson decomitted from the Ducks after Mario Cristobal left Eugene. He’s now in the transfer portal looking for a new home.

An interesting name popped up in the transfer portal this week, and it seems to be flying relatively under the radar in Oregon circles, though the player in question has close ties to the Ducks.

Oklahoma State wide receiver Stephon Johnson announced on Wednesday that he would be transferring from the Cowboys and looking for a new school. This is notable for Duck fans became Johnson was previously committed to Oregon before watching Mario Cristobal leave for Miami, which led the former 3-star WR to open up his recruitment once again.

It was a previous coaching staff that recruited Johnson to Eugene, of course, but the Ducks still have a need for some depth and proven ability at the WR position. Johnson had an impressive true-freshman season with Oklahoma State, catching 17 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns. We know that he likes the Ducks enough to commit there once, so might he take a look at them again this time around?

We will have to wait and see, but the first step is making sure that Dan Lanning and the Ducks even have an interest in getting him out of the portal.

The lone-standing committed wide receiver in the Oregon Ducks’ 2022 recruiting class has de-committed and reopened his recruitment as of Wednesday night.

Stephon Johnson, a 3-star receiver from DeSoto, Texas, announced on Twitter that he would be taking some time to reconsider what is best for his future.

Johnson is rated as the No. 69 WR in the nation, and the No. 524 overall player in the 2022 class.

After being recruited by Bryan McClendon and the coaching staff that has now largely followed Mario Cristobal to Miami, it is not a shock that Johnson de-committed from Oregon. As Dan Lanning comes to Eugene and works to build up the 2022 class, it has become clear that WR is a major place of need.

The Ducks already have verbal agreements from 4-star safeties Trejon Williams and Landon Hullaby, as well as 4-star QB Tanner Bailey, and 4-star DL Gracen Halton.

On top of those commits, Oregon is seemingly in the driver’s seat when it comes to some of the other massive names in this recruiting class, including 4-star DL Cyrus Moss, and 5-star tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. If Mario Cristobal can continue to work his magic, then Oregon will be fielding a team of elite talent that stacks up with the best in the nation in no time.
