Bears TE Robert Tonyan now questionable for Sunday’s game vs. Packers

The Bears added Tonyan to the injury report with a back issue and announced a few roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Chicago Bears were set to enter their Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers with essentially a healthy roster, but now they could be without one of their tight ends. On Saturday, the Bears added Robert Tonyan to the injury report with a back issue, and he is now questionable to play. He practiced in full all week and had no injury designation up to this point.

Tonyan was signed as a free agent this offseason after spending six years with the Packers. He was set to face his former team for the first time, but that is now in jeopardy. His status for the game will be announced no later than 90 minutes prior to kickoff.

With Tonyan landing on the injury report, the Bears elevated tight end Stephen Carlson, as well as linebacker DeMarquis Gates, from the practice squad. They also released linebacker Dylan Cole, who was the lone player with an injury designation on Friday.

Carlson saw the most action of any Bears tight end this preseason but hasn’t played in a regular-season game since 2020 due to injuries. Gates, meanwhile, played in three games for the Bears last season, totaling one tackle.

7 Bears veterans in need of a strong training camp

These Bears players may not necessarily be on the bubble heading into camp, but they need a good showing when practices begin.

We’re inching closer and closer to the start of training camp for the Chicago Bears and many storylines will begin to unfold, from the ascent of the rookies to how new veterans will gel with the team. No matter what direction you look in, there’s going to be something of note to watch when camp begins.

One of those storylines will involve veterans who may not necessarily be on the roster bubble but will need strong camp performances to solidify their position. Whether that’s as a starter or a backup. Here are seven of those players who will benefit greatly from a strong camp showing.

Bears 2023 training camp preview: Tight ends

Our next Bears position preview going into training camp is tight end, headlined by Cole Kmet and newcomer Robert Tonyan.

Chicago Bears training camp is less than a month away, which means it’s time to start looking ahead at the roster the team is bringing to Lake Forest.

We’re unveiling our Bears 2023 training camp position previews, where we’re breaking down every player by position and examining the biggest question facing the group.

Up next is the tight end position, led by Cole Kmet who is coming off the best season of his young career. But he’s not the only tight end on the team who can be a dynamic receiving threat.

The Bears added veteran Robert Tonyan in free agency, giving Chicago another weapon for quarterback Justin Fields. Veteran Stephen Carlson and second-year players Jake Tonges and Chase Allen round out the group.

Here’s a closer look at the Bears’ tight ends heading into training camp.

Former Browns tight end Stephen Carlson signs with Bears

The former undrafted tight end returns to an NFL roster.

Teams are giving players tryout opportunities, and one former member of the Cleveland Browns, tight end Stephen Carlson, has gotten his shot. While he hasn’t played in the NFL since tearing his ACL before the 2021 season, he got the opportunity to put his skills on display with the Chicago Bears as a participant in their rookie minicamp. After getting healthy, the undrafted free agent signing out of Princeton has signed with the Bears after working out during their rookie minicamp.

During his time in Cleveland, Carlson played in 25 games while catching only six passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Carlson is a good athlete that tested well when he was coming out of college and will now have a chance to be a part of a most improved passing attack in Chicago with the moves made this offseason.

TE Stephen Carlson cleared to workout, takes visit with Giants

The Browns missed Carlson as a depth player and special teams player last year and, currently, the TE room lacks depth. Now healthy, a visit to New York is first on Carlson’s list:

While there are a few huge questions at the top of the Cleveland Browns roster, the bottom of the 53-man will be interesting as well. How will the team deal with having five quality running backs? What receivers will make the team? After cutting Andy Janovich, is Johnny Stanton certain to make the team or will they have no fullbacks?

The tight end room is also very interesting after newly re-signed David Njoku and Harrison Bryant. After the release of Austin Hooper, the Browns did not add a significant player at the position.

Of most interest is Marcus Santos-Silva, the former college basketball player signed shortly after the draft. Santos-Silva looked good in a limited highlight video but is unlikely to be ready to contribute after not playing the game since his freshman year of high school.

After that, Miller Forristall and Nakie Griffin-Stewart are the only other depth players at the position with neither having much experience.

Last year, Stephen Carlson was slotted in as the team’s fourth tight end but tore his ACL in the preseason. Carlson is cleared to workout again but, instead of returning to Cleveland, will visit with the New York Giants:

The Browns could still bring Carlson back but taking a visit with another team does not bode well for that possibility.

For now, Cleveland is banking on Njoku and Bryant to carry the majority of the load at the position with the hope one of the younger guys can provide support. It is a position we could see the front office look to address during training camp as other teams make cuts from their rosters.

Giants worked out TE Stephen Carlson

The New York Giants worked out former Cleveland Browns TE Stephen Carlson in East Rutherford on Monday.

The New York Giants still need to tinker with their roster a bit ahead of July’s training camp, which is why they continue to hold East Rutherford workouts.

Such a workout was held on Monday and among those in attendance was former Cleveland Browns tight end Stephen Carlson.

As Tom Pelissero notes, Carlson suffered a torn ACL during the 2021 preseason but has recently been cleared to play. And the Giants, lacking in the tight end room, were among the first to come calling.

The 25-year-old Carlson signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Princeton in 2019. He’s appeared in 27 career games (seven starts) and hauled in six receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown. He’s also recorded nine special teams tackles and recovered one onside kick.

Despite the visit and the workout, The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reports that the Giants passed on signing Carlson.

Browns reduce roster to 85: Waive 3, Carlson and Switzer to IR

The Browns trimmed the roster down to 85 men by waiving three and placing two on injured reserves today.

The Cleveland Browns have reduced their roster down to 85 players in advance of the Tuesday deadline to do so. Following the team’s victory of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Browns were required to cut five from their 90 man roster.

To do so, Cleveland placed Stephen Carlson and Ryan Switzer on injured reserve while waiving three others.

As previously reported, Carlson is expected to miss the season with a knee injury sustained in the game with the Jaguars. The details of Switzer’s injury have not been revealed, except to note it is a foot injury, but he scored the Browns final touchdown Saturday night with less than five minutes to go in the game.

The three players waived have less than four years of experience in the league and will be subject to the waiver process. Offensive lineman Cordel Iwuagwu, linebacker Montrel Meander and cornerback Kiondre Thomas were all let go by the team. Thomas was waived with the injury designation.

Cleveland welcomes the New York Giants to Berea this week for shared practices prior to their matchup in both teams’ second preseason game. Like this week, teams much cut another five players from their roster early next week as well.

Our coverage of the Browns march to the 53-man final roster will continue. Yesterday, we predicted Iwuagwu and Switzer as a part of the first five cut from the 90 man roster. Today we looked at four players whose stock rose from the game and then three others whose stock took a hit against Jacksonville.

Browns TE Stephen Carlson likely out for season with knee injury

Reports are in that the Browns will be down one tight end after their first preseason game. How could it impact roster composition?

The Cleveland Browns’ primary goal in the preseason is to stay as healthy as possible. Given the nature of the NFL, it is unlikely any team will come out unscathed.

During the opening preseason game, the Browns saw tight end Stephen Carlson and linebacker Mack Wilson leave the game with injuries. During today’s press conference, head coach Kevin Stefanski did not have an update on the condition of either player.

Both Carlson and Wilson were competing for backup roles on a very deep team with Super Bowl aspirations. Unfortunately for Carlson, that competition seems to be over as reports are out that he will miss the season with a knee injury:

First reported by The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook, Carlson’s injury could lead Cleveland to alter the makeup of their roster going into Week 1. Most expected Carlson to make the roster as the team’s fourth tight end behind Austin Hooper, David Njoku and Harrison Bryant. Instead, the team could look to keep an extra player at another position while utilizing the flexibility of Andy Janovich, if needed, as a blocker.

We will continue to update you on all Browns injury-related issues here on Browns Wire.

Stephen Carlson out of first preseason game due to knee injury

In the first half of the first preseason game, the Browns lost tight end Stephen Carlson to a knee injury.

The Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars faced off in the opening preseason game for both teams. While the Browns prepare for what they hope is a march toward a Super Bowl, the Jaguars are turning the page with Urban Meyer at the helm.

Many of Cleveland’s starters were sitting out the game either due to injury or the team just protecting them for her long-term goals. At tight end, Austin Hooper and David Njoku both sat out the game giving Harrison Bryant and Stephen Carlson a chance to make an impact.

During the second quarter of the game, Cleveland lost Carlson to a knee injury:

We will update details of the injury when the team provides information.

Browns sign DT Sheldon Day, TE Stephen Carlson

Carlson is back for a third season in Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns made a big splash on the transaction wire on Wednesday by signing free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year contract. But Clowney isn’t the only player with whom the Browns did business.

Cleveland signed free agent DT Sheldon Day and TE Stephen Carlson to deals. Both ended the 2020 season with the Browns.

Day was on the team’s practice squad after signing with the team late in the season. He last played for the Indianapolis Colts. Day has five seasons of NFL experience.

Carlson was an exclusive rights free agent who the Browns tendered earlier this offseason. The tight end signed his offer, locking him in for 2021. He has six catches in his two seasons in Cleveland while also playing over 80 percent of the team’s reps on special teams in 2020.
