Steelers practice squad: Pittsburgh protects Karl Joseph, 3 others for Week 15

The Steelers protected four players, including Karl Joseph, for their Week 15 showdown with the Titans.

The NFL carried over some successful rules from the 2020 season, including practice squad protections. Teams can protect up to four of the most valued players on their practice squad each week, preventing them from being signed by other teams.

Teams that play on Sundays can designate protected players each Tuesday at 4 p.m. Teams that play on Mondays designate players each Wednesday. Protected players are not eligible to sign with another team until after that week’s game.

Here are the four players the Pittsburgh Steelers protected on their practice squad for Week 15 versus the Tennessee Titans:

Pittsburgh Steelers sign ex-Raiders DB to practice squad

Steelers signed former fourth-round DB to the practice squad today.

Former Las Vegas Raiders defensive back Isaiah Johnson has been signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, the team announced today.

Drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft, Johnson appeared in 19 games (no starts) and contributed five defended passes and 15 tackles.

Johnson was placed on the physically unable to perform list in the offseason and released when teams cut rosters to the final 53 in August. In October, the Dallas Cowboys signed him to their practice squad, but he was released after two weeks.

Johnson will replace Linden Stephens, who landed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday.

REPORT: Steelers sign ex-Falcons LB Jacob Tuioti-Mariner to PS

Expect the Steelers to announce the signing of OLB Jacob Tuioti-Mariner to their practice squad.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Atlanta Falcons outside linebacker Jacob Tuioti-Mariner to their practice squad, per a league source of NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

Tuioti-Mariner was in his third season with the Falcons when he was cut on Tuesday. He saw a decrease in playing time after being moved to linebacker from tackle in Atlanta’s new defensive system.

In six games (73 snaps), the UCLA product registered nine tackles and two sacks, according to Pro Football Reference. In his first two seasons, he had 45 tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries while playing on the defensive line in his first two seasons.

The Steelers were thin at outside linebacker depth after losing rookie Quincy Roche to the Giants before the start of the season and Jamir Jones to the Rams.

Though the move is not yet official, expect the Steelers to make an announcement later today.

Steelers release K Josh Lambo from practice squad

The Steelers signed Lambo as an insurance policy after starter Chris Boswell was concussed during a fake FG vs the Browns.

Well… that was fast. Kicker Josh Lambo has been released from the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday.

The Steelers signed Lambo as an insurance policy after starter Chris Boswell was concussed during a fake field goal versus the Cleveland Browns.

Despite missing an extra point in last night’s game, Boswell has shown there’s no need for the Steelers to use a valuable practice squad slot on a kicker.

Steelers signing DL Khalil Davis to practice squad

ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that the Steelers are signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers DL Khalil Davis to their squad.

When the practice squad update is released later today, expect defensive lineman Khalil Davis to be on it. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers are signing the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer to their squad.

Davis, 25, was a sixth-round pick with the Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL draft. He appeared in two games during his rookie season but hadn’t played at all for the Bucs this season.

The Steelers were in line for the Davis lottery when the Bucs released him last month. Instead, the Indianapolis Colts grabbed Davis, and the Steelers signed nose tackle Eli Ankou, who they released one week later.

The Colts waived Davis on Saturday after just six snaps in Week 6.

Davis will presumably take the spot of his twin brother, Carlos, who the Steelers placed on injured reserve last week.

The Davis’ join T.J. and Derek Watt and Trey and Terrell Edmunds as the third set of brothers on the team.

Steelers practice squad 2020: Pittsburgh protects 4 PS players for Week 11

A new concept for the 2020 season is the “protected” practice squad. Here are the four players the Steelers chose to protect.

For Week 11 practice squad protections, Pittsburgh again tabbed rookie safety Antoine Brooks, wide receiver Deon Cain, tight end Kevin Rader and running back Wendell Smallwood. These four are not eligible to sign with another team until after Sunday’s game.

The Steelers signed tight end Charles Jones to the practice squad on Tuesday, as the team was down a tight end with Vance McDonald still on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Practice squad “protection” is a new concept for the 2020 season. It’s a concession for the potential personnel shortages that could occur if the virus strikes the locker room.

Teams can designate protected players each Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m., except for clubs that played on the previous Monday night; their designations go into effect prior to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Steelers travel to Jacksonville Sunday, Nov. 22 to take on the Jaguars.

Pittsburgh Steelers host former XFL linebacker for visit

Scales was on the Steelers practice squad last preseason.

The linebacker visits continue for the Pittsburgh Steelers, per the NFL wire. This time, it’s outside linebacker Tegray Scales. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Scales was part of the Steelers 2019 training camp squad.

The Indiana Hoosier signed as an undrafted free agent out with the Los Angeles Rams in 2018, only to be waived after training camp. He was briefly part of the Indianapolis Colts practice squad later that year.

The 6’0 linebacker signed a futures contract with Pittsburgh in January 2019 but was cut after the preseason. He was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad this summer and released on Oct. 27.

Post-Steelers, Scales was with the XFL’s Dallas Renegades, where he had 31 tackles and a sack in five games.

Pittsburgh currently has one vacant spot on its practice squad. We’ll see if it goes to Scales.
