Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney underwent knee procedure on Tuesday

Kadarius Toney’s status for Week 1 of the #Chiefs’ 2023 campaign is officially in question after Andy Reid’s comments to the media on Tuesday.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney was slated to be Patrick Mahomes’ top target in the Kansas City Chiefs offense to start the 2023 season, but after he suffered a knee injury during Sunday’s practice session, his outlook for the immediate future is officially in question.

Andy Reid told the media after Tuesday’s workouts that Toney underwent a procedure to clean up cartilage in his knee, and that there was a “chance” that the receiver would be ready for Week 1.

This is not the news that Chiefs fans wanted to receive after Toney’s injury earlier in the week, but given the team’s newfound depth at wideout, the grim report on his status doesn’t seem as concerning.

Toney’s absence will pave the way for standout rookie Rashee Rice and veteran playmaker Richie James to get more snaps with the first-team offense, helping them build chemistry with Mahomes ahead of the regular season kickoff in September.

Which draft picks can each of the Sean Payton suitors trade to the Saints?

The Broncos, Cardinals, and Texans have each been granted interviews with Sean Payton. Which draft picks could those teams trade the Saints?

So here’s what we know: three different NFL teams have been granted interviews with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, suggesting that the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans each have an understanding of what it would take to trade for Payton’s contract now that he’s looking for work again.

And that’s sent Saints fans into a spiral, daydreaming about which draft picks their team might get back — could the second and third overall picks in the 2023 draft be in play, giving New Orleans a shot at premium quarterback prospects like C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young? Don’t bet on it. But crazier things have happened.

Still, it’s important to get an idea of where each of those suitors stands. Remember, players can’t be involved in coach trades. Only draft picks and cash can be exchanged. And because the draft order has not been fully finalized until compensatory picks have been awarded, we only know the exact slots for the top three rounds. Let’s recap the selections available to the Texans, Cardinals, and Broncos right now:

Taysom Hill questionable to return with Lisfranc foot injury vs. Falcons

Saints QB Taysom Hill’s return questionable vs. Falcons with Lisfranc foot injury

That’s not good. New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill left Week 18’s game with the Atlanta Falcons early with a foot injury, which the team announced makes him questionable to return. Trevor Siemian will continue to play in his place; with Ian Book inactive, it makes Alvin Kamara the team’s emergency quarterback option. As he’s said before, he’s “ready to get my Drew Brees on” if needed.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The Saints need a win here, combined with a Los Angeles Rams win over the San Francisco 49ers, to clinch a playoff berth. But the 49ers are playing them close and only trail by 17-10.

At least Siemian has been playing well after coming off the bench. FOX Sports sideline reporter Laura Okman shared that Saints coach Sean Payton specified Hill has a Lisfranc injury during the halftime break, but that “If he can go, he will go.” Lisfranc injuries have a reputation for ending seasons; let’s hope Hill’s isn’t so severe. His 2015 season at BYU was ended by a Lisfranc injury to his right foot; this time, he’s dealing with an injury to his left foot.

Latest update on Chiefs DB Tyrann Mathieu’s status for Week 1 vs. Browns

#Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo says “It’s up in the air right now” in regards to Tyrann Mathieu playing in Week 1 against the #Browns.

Kansas City Chiefs DB Tyrann Mathieu is set to miss his second consecutive practice ahead of Week 1, putting his game status in doubt for the season opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Mathieu was placed on Reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday, September 1, following a positive test. There was some optimism following Andy Reid’s update ahead of practice yesterday, but Mathieu remains in the league’s COVID-19 protocols.

It’s still unclear if Mathieu will be available for Kansas City on Sunday. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo emphasized that his unit is planning for multiple scenarios.

“It’s up in the air right now,” Spagnuolo said. “It’s a little bit challenging to gameplan for, but we’ve got Plan A and Plan B. We would handle it no different, obviously, than somebody getting hurt in the middle of the game. Guys have got to be ready to step up.”

Mathieu has been participating in team meetings via Zoom. Should the team not have Mathieu available to play, they’ll at least have the added benefit of a full practice week preparing other guys to fill in on the defense.

“The advantage we have, I guess, versus that particular scenario is that we’re practicing with guys that we think might have to play,” Spagnuolo said. “So, we’ll move guys around, do the things that we have to. [We’ll] try to do most of the things that we do with Tyrann but certainly, some of those things are going to change and some of the calls might alter because of that.”

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Andy Reid suggested that Tyrann Mathieu could play without practicing during the week. That’s not typical of Reid as he usually likes his players to get at least one practice in before playing in a game.

Spagnuolo wasn’t as convicted as Reid, but he also suggest that Mathieu could play without much practice preparation.

“We don’t know, right?” Spagnuolo replied. “But this dude, he’s a special guy in my opinion. So we’ll see, but I think we’ve got to be fair to him. We always say this: ‘Sometimes you’ve got to protect the players from themselves.’ So we’ll be careful there. Coach Reid and I have talked about it. We’ve talked about it with Rick. We’ll see where we are when the time comes.”

Mathieu still has a chance to practice on Friday, but for now, Spagnuolo anxiously awaits the results of tomorrow’s battery of COVID-19 testing.

“I don’t know that yet,” Spagnuolo said of Mathieu practicing on Friday. “We know it was one of the scenarios. We won’t know really, until tomorrow.”

The NFL’s latest rules require that a vaccinated player test negative for COVID-19 twice, 24 hours apart, before returning to action.

An injury update for Iowa guard Joe Wieskamp ahead of tonight’s matchup against Wisconsin

Iowa guard Joe Wieskamp, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, sprained his right ankle during the Iowa Hawkeyes’ matchup with Wisconsin

Iowa guard Joe Wieskamp, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, sprained his right ankle during the Iowa Hawkeyes’ win over the Wisconsin Badgers last weekend.

While his ankle has improved since Sunday’s game, it was reported two days ago that his status was in doubt for tonight’s rematch.

There is now clarity surrounding his status, as Jon Rothstein just reported that Wieskamp will play tonight against the Badgers.

The junior has played a critical role in Iowa’s success this season, as he enters postseason play averaging 15 points-per-game, 6.6 rebounds and shoots 50.5 percent from the field and 48.9 percent from three.

His presence is massive news for a Hawkeye team that is looking to go 3-0 against Wisconsin this season.

Reports: RB Latavius Murray day-to-day, status ‘up in the air’ vs. Bucs

New Orleans Saints RB Latavius Murray is reportedly day-to-day with a quad muscle injury, with his status uncertain against the Buccaneers.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”7v9vZq2yQ0-1107854-7498″]

It would be a tough break for Latavius Murray to miss Sunday’s playoff game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but that’s a real possibility for the New Orleans Saints running back.

Murray was a non-participant in the Saints’ first practice session of the week on Wednesday, due to a quad injury. He exited their Wild-Card Round win over the Chicago Bears and didn’t return, but this is the first we’ve heard of his condition.

For now, he’s reported to be day-to-day while feeling out the severity of the issue. Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football first reported that status, which was confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who added that Murray’s availability on Sunday “is best described as up in the air.”

Murray has only missed one game since signing with the Saints as a free agent in 2019, and that was due to being a high-risk close contact to running back Alvin Kamara after he tested positive for COVID-19. In 33 games, including a pair of playoff appearances for New Orleans, he’s totaled 301 carries for 1,323 rushing yards and 9 touchdown runs, plus 60 receptions for 426 receiving yards and 3 touchdown catches, the only scoring grabs of his 7-year NFL career.

Losing him for the Divisional Round would hurt, but the Saints have overcome that sort of adversity before. They still have Kamara on top of the depth chart, and Ty Montgomery came through in a big spot with a 100-yards rushing performance in Week 17 after the rest of the running backs were forced into quarantine. Having Murray available would be nice, but it’s far from being critical factor in this game.

Ryan Ramczyk (concussion) set to return for Saints vs. Chargers

New Orleans Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk is expected to play versus the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football after a concussion

[jwplayer 0DO8QQHJ-ThvAeFxT]

There was a scary moment at Ford Field in Week 4 when New Orleans Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk struggled to get to his feet after a hard collision, prompting him to exit the game against the Detroit Lions and enter the NFL concussion protocol.

But Ramczyk went through the procedures and was cleared to practice on a limited basis on Thursday and Friday, and now he’s ready to get back on the field after fully participating in Saturday’s practice session. He received no formal game status — out, questionable, or otherwise — in the final injury report, and the Saints should have him back in the starting lineup on Monday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.

His loss was felt immediately a week ago: the Saints struggled to move the ball against Detroit, with Ramczyk’s backup quickly allowing a sack. So getting him back is a tremendous upgrade. Ramczyk has been one of the NFL’s best right tackles since the Saints drafted him back in 2017, and they’ll need him to help contain superstar Chargers pass rusher Joey Bosa, who is officially questionable to play with triceps and knee injuries. Bosa has already created three sacks in his first four games; he’s bagged 44 sacks in his 57-game NFL career (including the playoffs).

Since being selected with the 31st pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin, Ramczyk has started 56 of 57 possible games for the Saints (having been held out of a meaningless Week 17 game in 2018, after New Orleans secured the No. 1 NFC playoff seed). He’s consistently graded as one of the five or six best right tackles in the league, and was recognized as an AP All-Pro in both 2018 (second team) and 2019 (first team).

Saints-Packers injury report: Marcus Davenport returns, Michael Thomas still out

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers updated their injury report and shared statuses for key players following practice on Thursday.

[jwplayer 55f1rSAh-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers updated their injury report for key players following Thursday’s practice sessions.

New Orleans welcomed defensive end Marcus Davenport back to practice on a limited basis, which would be a huge addition to the pass rush unit. He’s been sidelined for weeks with an elbow injury but could make his 2020 season debut if he practices again on Friday.

However, wide receiver Michael Thomas did not participate, which is unsurprising. He’s not expected to return for another week or two (or longer), so the Saints will probably have to continue working without him. But we can’t rule him out for certain until the Saints make it official.

One more injury of note: nose tackle Malcom Brown was downgraded. The Wednesday injury report was a best guess by the training staff because the team didn’t practice after traveling back home from Las Vegas, but they estimated him as being a limited participant. When the Saints got to work on Thursday, he wasn’t able to join them.

If Brown can’t play on Sunday, that could mean the return of Shy Tuttle to the interior rotation. He was a productive rookie in 2019 and could add some juice on passing downs. Increased depth along the line has made Tuttle a healthy scratch through two weeks.

NFL Week 3: Davante Adams sidelined on first Saints-Packers injury report

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers released their first injury report ahead of their Week 3 kickoff on “Sunday Night Football.”

The New Orleans Saints did not hold a practice session on Wednesday after traveling back home on a short week, so they estimated practice participation for all players managing injury situations. That means we shouldn’t look too deeply into anything just yet; these statuses are only educated guesses from the Saints medical staff.

That isn’t the case for the Green Bay Packers injury report. Green Bay held Davante Adams, their best wide receiver, out of practice after he exited their Week 2 game with a hamstring injury, and defensive tackle Kenny Clark also rested (while listed with a groin injury).

Their status should be monitored as the week progresses, but Adams’ situation feels very similar to the hamstring issue Mike Evans dealt with before the Saints’ season opener. For now, we should look to Sunday’s night game with the expectation that he will line up against Marshon Lattimore.

Buccaneers upgrade WR Mike Evans to questionable vs. Saints

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers upgraded wide receiver Mike Evans to questionable, not doubtful, for Sunday’s game with the New Orleans Saints.

[jwplayer eCHd7tlI-ThvAeFxT]

This will surely stun everyone: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have upgraded wide receiver Mike Evans from doubtful to questionable for Sunday’s game with the New Orleans Saints. Evans was a limited participant in Friday’s practice session after resting a hamstring injury throughout the week, but he must have shown enough confidence in his leg during Saturday’s walkthrough to earn this optimism.

He will still have to go through pregame warmups and a final check by the Buccaneers medical staff, but Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians has said all along that Evans playing would end up being a gametime decision. At this stage, the Saints should probably plan on Evans lining up against them.

If he does play, expect top Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore to run against him for most of the day. Lattimore and Evans have traded big games against each other before, with Evans winning the 2018 season opener off of 7 receptions for 147 yards and a score, while Lattimore didn’t allow him to catch a single pass in their most recent meeting.

That decision could also be informed by Evans’ success against the No. 2 Saints cornerback, Janoris Jenkins, when he played the New York Giants last year. Evans drew Jenkins in coverage for much of the game and won that matchup handily, totaling 8 receptions for 150 yards and 3 touchdown catches. Jenkins should be assigned to cover Chris Godwin this time around, but the Buccaneers may get creative and move their receivers around more often to take advantage of a mismatch.
