Patriots rookie QB fails to win starting job

Drake Maye couldn’t beat out Jacoby Brissett for the starting job in New England.

Throughout all of New England Patriots training camp and the preseason, there was a heated position battle between rookie quarterback Drake Maye and veteran Jacoby Brissett. Early Thursday morning, the team announced that Brissett would be the team’s starting quarterback to begin the season.

Brissett enters his ninth NFL season with his fifth NFL team. Brissett returned to the Patriots this offseason as a free agent. This is Brissett’s second stint with the team after New England selected him in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. Brissett spent one season with the Patriots and was subsequently traded to the Indianapolis Colts.

The Patriots invested heavily in Maye having taken him No. 3 overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Maye was strong in training camp and in the preseason but couldn’t outpace the veteran Brissett so he must now sit back and wait for his opportunity.

New England is on the road in Week One taking on the Cincinnati Bengals.

Russell Wilson set to play against Broncos in Week 2 after being named Steelers’ starter

After being named the Steelers’ starting quarterback, Russell Wilson is now set to play against the Broncos in Week 2.

Mike Tomlin has named Russell Wilson the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback for the 2024 NFL season following Wilson’s competition with Justin Fields this summer.

Wilson is now obviously set to start in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, but the more notable development is that Pittsburgh’s schedule includes a trip to Denver in Week 2.

Wilson is now set to start against his former team when the Broncos host the Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 15. That game will be regionally televised on CBS. Empower Field at Mile High has already trolled Wilson in preseason, so we can expect a “warm” welcome when the QB returns to Denver.

The Broncos acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. He went 11-19 as a starter in Denver before being benched by coach Sean Payton with two games remaining in the 2023 season. Payton then released Wilson this spring, a move that created the largest dead money salary cap hit in NFL history.

“We felt it was in the best interests of our team,” Payton said in March. After that, Denver acquired Zach Wilson in a trade with the New York Jets and used a first-round pick to select Bo Nix during the NFL draft in April.

It’s now shaping up to be Nix vs. Wilson in Week 2.

Broncos believe QB Zach Wilson will become a starter again in the NFL

“I do think he will be a starter in this league,” Broncos GM George Paton said of QB Zach Wilson.

The Denver Broncos continue to praise backup quarterback Zach Wilson.

After opting to carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, Broncos general manager George Paton was asked if he believes Wilson could one day return to being a starter in the NFL.

“No doubt,” Paton said. “He has starter tools all over. It’s been pretty cool just watching him with really no expectations. He can just go out there and play football. He has all the traits. He has all the starting traits in the world.

“He’s still working through some things. You can see the good and the really good last week in the game. He can throw it as good as anyone in the league. I mentioned before, he’s smart and he’s a great kid. He has starter traits all over. I do think he will be a starter in this league.”

Denver acquired Wilson from the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick earlier this year. The former No. 2 overall pick is now listed as the Broncos’ third-string quarterback behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham.

Wilson impressed in Denver’s preseason finale, throwing for 251 yards and scoring three touchdowns with no turnovers.

The Broncos’ belief in Wilson does seem to be genuine, but it’s also in the team’s best interest to hype up his stock. With three capable quarterbacks on the active roster, Denver might receive trade calls from other teams this season if any QBs suffer injuries this fall. The NFL’s in-season trade deadline is Nov. 5.

Jarrett Stidham reacts to Bo Nix being named starter: ‘I was very disappointed’

“Obviously, I was very disappointed,” Broncos QB Jarrett Stidham said of Sean Payton naming Bo Nix the team’s starting quarterback.

Jarrett Stidham did everything right this offseason.

Stidham organized and hosted offseason passing sessions with teammates in Texas before training camp. He entered the summer listed as QB1 on the Denver Broncos‘ depth chart. He started the first preseason game.

Everyone knew, though, that first-round draft pick Bo Nix was the favorite to win the starting job. And after he impressed through the first two weeks of preseason, Nix was officially named the starter last Wednesday.

Following the Broncos’ preseason finale on Sunday, Stidham was made available to the media for the first time since last week’s QB1 news broke.

“First of all, obviously, I was very disappointed,” Stidham said. “I know I’m a starting quarterback in this league. I have no doubts about that, and it just didn’t shake out my way. I know what kind of player I am, what kind of person I am. … I have no doubts that I’m a starting-caliber quarterback in this league.”

Stidham started Denver’s final two games of the 2023 season after Russell Wilson was benched. The Broncos went 1-1 with Stidham under center.

“I think they know what I can do,” Stidham said. “I think I displayed that last year whenever I was asked to come in and play the last two games, throughout practice, throughout training camp, OTAs, the whole thing. At the end of the day, I’m going to go out there and do what I do. I’m confident in what I can do, and I’ll do whatever I can to help this team.”

Stidham completed 60.6% of his passes for 496 yards with two touchdowns against one interception last year. Two games is not a very large sample size, but Stidham also has a full year of experience in coach Sean Payton’s offense.

“I feel extremely prepared being in the offense for the second year,” Stidham said. “I feel like I have a good rhythm with the guys, I have a good rhythm with Sean when he’s calling plays. I feel super comfortable and extremely ready.”

While he’s disappointed to not have won the starting job, Stidham’s going to be a team-first player. The veteran will continue to help Nix — like he already has — and Stidham will be ready if called on this season.

“I feel like I have a very unique experience, playing behind — in my opinion — the best quarterback to ever play and seeing what that was like day-in and day-out, and being behind some other really, really good players and coaches as well,” Stidham said.

“Obviously, I’m going to do whatever I can to help Bo get prepared. Obviously, he’s never had a real season like this in the NFL. I’m going to help him whatever way I can, and then also be ready to go if I need to be. So [I’m] just ready for the season to get here.”

The Broncos will open the season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Sept. 8. Denver is considered a five-point underdog in Week 1.

Broncos QB Bo Nix praises ‘first class’ teammate Jarrett Stidham

“He’s handled the situation with first class,” Bo Nix said of Jarrett Stidham. “I respect everything that he has been able to do.”

Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham were competing against each other for the Denver Broncos‘ starting job this summer, but that hasn’t stopped them from forming a good relationship as teammates.

After being named the starting quarterback on Wednesday, Nix took time to praise Stidham — and Zach Wilson — for how they went about handling the QB battle during training camp and preseason.

“We have a very mature room,” Nix said. “They’ve been through a lot themselves. First of all, with ‘Stiddy,’ he started behind one of the greatest ever. That is where his process began as a rookie like me behind the greatest of all time. He’s teaching me things that he learned and picked up at a young age that not many people get to experience.

“He’s handled the situation with first class. I respect everything that he has been able to do. He’s battled through a lot and has been given different situations, but he still shows up and gives us his best. That is going to pay dividends in the long run with me and being able to sit behind a guy like that and watch, learn, follow his routine and follow his process because he has been around some greats already.”

Nix had praise for Wilson as well.

“With Zach, he’s been there and done that,” Nix said. “He started as a rookie. There is a lot that I can learn from him and a lot that he has already taught me. Having those two in the room with me on a day-to-day basis is going to be huge.

“I would be really dumb not to listen to those guys and not take what they have learned, already been through and the experiences that they share. So hopefully the good happens again, and the bad doesn’t happen again.”

Nix, 24, is set to start for the Broncos when they go on the road to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season. It remains to be seen how many quarterbacks Denver will carry on the 53-man roster, but whether it’s Stidham or Wilson (or both), Nix will be happy to have them by his side going into his first season in the NFL.

This was Bo Nix’s reaction to being named Denver’s starting quarterback

“I’m super excited and ready to get back to work again,” Bo Nix said after being named the Broncos’ starting quarterback.

After nearly a month of training camp and two preseason games, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton had seen enough.

Bo Nix was the obvious choice to start at quarterback after outperforming Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson this summer. Payton made the news official on Wednesday, announcing Nix as Denver’s new QB1.

Congratulations, Bo.

“Thank you, I appreciate it,” Nix said after Wednesday’s practice. “It was really cool. It’s not every day [you] get that news. Obviously, as a room, we’ve been working hard, putting a lot of good things on film and putting a lot of good things on the practice field. To get that news is definitely a great thing. So I’m super excited and ready to get back to work again. Go back to it and start again.”

The Broncos will wrap up preseason at home against the Arizona Cardinals this weekend, then attention will turn to their regular season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 8. When Nix lines up under center in that game, he will become Denver’s first rookie quarterback to start in Week 1 since John Elway in 1983.

“It will be a special moment,” Nix said. “Obviously, that’s great to share with such a great player like John Elway, but definitely want to consider going out there and doing whatever I can do ultimately for the team.

“It doesn’t matter when your first start is and doesn’t matter if you have to wait or go right now. You just want to get out there, get the first win, ultimately compete at a high level and give your team the best chance possible. That is what my goal is at the beginning. Just give our team the best chance to go out there and win games every week.”

Payton has not yet announced if Nix will play in the team’s preseason finale on Sunday. If not, Broncos fans won’t see Nix on the field again for 17 days. After eight years of football purgatory, fans in Denver surely can wait a few more weeks before the on-field unveiling of Payton’s new QB1.

Sean Payton nonchalantly announced starter decision to QBs before practice

“We’re getting ready to practice, and that was it,” Sean Payton said. “We didn’t have cake and candles or anything like that.”

Before practice on Wednesday, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton gathered his three quarterbacks together and told them Bo Nix won the starting job, beating out Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson after two weeks of preseason.

“Right out here on the practice field before practice [I told them],” Payton said. “I just grabbed each one of them. I didn’t want to read about this in the national media before I spoke to you guys [local media].”

By telling his QBs right before practice, there were no opportunities for the news to break during practice. After the session ended, Payton first broke the news to military members visiting practice, then he met with local media members and officially announced the news.

The coach handled it nonchalantly.

“Yeah, he walked up and said that he was going to tell you guys this afternoon [and said], ‘Let’s have a good practice,'” Nix recalled.

How did the rookie quarterback react?

“He smiled and he was good,” Payton said. “We’re getting ready to practice, and that was it. We didn’t have cake and candles or anything like that.”

Nix eventually winning the job always felt like a formality, but Payton wanted him to earn it this summer.

“[E]verything in this league is earned,” Payton said. “The minute that there’s someone that has something that’s not earned, that can affect and impact your locker room. It really can. I’ve told the story with you guys about other positions, guys that were drafted that were released and free agents that made it. These guys see it.

“Now, we’re rooting for all of them. We really are. Why wouldn’t we? We want to see all these young players have success, and yet there’s still that element of show, earn and demonstrate. You guys obviously have spent a lot of time not just talking directly with the quarterbacks, and there’s a confidence level.”

This is the outcome Payton wanted to see after using a first-round draft pick to select Nix in April. The coach wasn’t going to force the decision or hand the job to Nix right as he walked through the door. Nix had to win the job this summer and he answered the bell.

“I just didn’t want to hurry it,” Payton said of his decision. “Teams handle these things differently. There’s certain things that I believe in and we kind of set out a plan. I’m pleased with how he’s playing and it’s much easier to make a decision like that and much more difficult maybe if he wasn’t having this—you guys understand where I’m [going]. We got a chance to see it. That’s most important for the locker room, I think.”

After completing 23-of-30 passes for 205 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers, Nix as QB1 was an easy decision for the Broncos, and his teammates witnessed him win the job. That’s important for the locker room, and that’s why Payton held a quarterback competition this summer.

Sean Payton not yet ready to announce other QB plans

Bo Nix has been named the Broncos starter, will he play on Sunday? TBD. How many QBs will make the 53-man roster? “We’ll see,” Payton said.

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton named Bo Nix his starting quarterback on Wednesday. After the coach broke the news, Payton was quickly asked if Nix will play in the team’s preseason finale on Sunday and what the rotation will be for Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson.

“We’re going to talk about Sunday [later], and I’m not leaning towards anything else,” Payton said. “There is no other announcement today.”

OK, we’ll hear about the QB rotation later in the week. How about how many QBs will be carried on the 53-man roster?

“We’ll see,” Payton said.

QB1 has been named. QB2 news will have to wait.

As for whether or not Nix will play against the Arizona Cardinals this weekend, Payton later hinted that some starters will be rested.

“We’re going to meet today at 2 [p.m.],” Payton said Wednesday. “There will be some guys that we hold out. I have a sheet really of every one of these players with every total snap they’ve played [against] Indianapolis and then Green Bay.

“So there are some guys — veteran starters maybe — that don’t have the snaps, and so they may see some time on Sunday. Then there are some guys that have had a lot of snaps where I’ll just be real mindful of. So we’ll have a better feel for that as the week goes on.”

Payton will speak again on Friday. He’s probably not going to announce how many QBs will make the 53-man roster, but we should learn on Friday if Nix will play on Sunday and how Stidham and Wilson will split reps. Check back later in the week, Broncos Country.

Peyton Manning endorses Bo Nix as Broncos’ new QB1

“He’ll be ready, and [I’m] pulling hard for him,” Peyton Manning said of Bo Nix getting ready to start for the Broncos in Week 1.

Sean Payton named rookie Bo Nix the team’s new starting quarterback on Wednesday and Denver Broncos royalty has been swift to endorse the move.

Former Broncos quarterbacks John Elway and Peyton Manning, who helped the team win three Super Bowls, competed in the BMW Championship pro-am in Castle Pines and they were both made available to media members after the Nix news broke on Wednesday.

Following an endorsement from Elway, Manning also gave the decision a thumbs up.

Manning said he met up with Nix and Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles at a Luke Bryan concert ahead of the pro-am on Tuesday night. The former quarterback also watched Nix in a joint practice with the Green Bay Packers at Denver’s facility last Friday.

“Hey, he’s had a great camp,” Manning said of Nix. “He’s had a great offseason. He’s used the time [well]. You knew his experience [and] his maturity would be an advantage for him and he’s picked up the system quickly, you can tell.

“I saw Sean [Payton] on Monday and he shared some things, too, just that Bo has really kind of answered his challenge and answered the bell. So, [I’m] happy for him. What a great opportunity. I know what that’s like, starting as a rookie in your first NFL game, but he’ll be ready. And [I’m] pulling hard for him.”

Nix is set to become the team’s first rookie quarterback since Elway to start in Week 1. Manning believes that is the right decision.

“I’m in favor — I’m a fan — of playing right away,” Manning said. “Getting the experience is only going to make him better.”

Manning retired from the NFL after winning Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos following the 2015 season. Nix is now set to become Denver’s 14th starting quarterback in the post-Manning era.

This play helped Sean Payton fall in love with Bo Nix

“I just had never seen that ever happen,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Bo Nix’s impressive play that stood out on film.

Late in the first quarter of Oregon’s blowout win over California last November, quarterback Bo Nix evaded a pass rusher on third down by dipping under his grasp, and the QB’s momentum carried him under his offensive lineman as well. Nix then looked up and completed a pass for a first down.

At some point during the scouting process leading up to the 2024 NFL draft, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton saw that play, and he came away impressed.

“There was a play that I’ve never seen before where the guard was blocking a three-technique and he kind of climbed and he actually slipped under between the guard and the three-technique, came out the other side and threw it,” Payton said Wednesday after naming Nix the team’s starter.

“I just had never seen that ever happen. It was the first time I ever saw it in my life where the quarterback kind of ducked between the rusher and the blocker and kind of came out the other end.”

This is presumably the play that Payton was referencing:

Nix met with the media after Wednesday’s practice and Payton’s remark was relayed to the quarterback.

“I’m not quite sure which one [Payton] is talking about, but I guess it’s good if I’m — I guess it could be a good and bad thing if I’m making plays he has never seen before,” Nix said with a smile. “I think that’s one thing that I enjoy about Coach Payton. He is going to be real.

“When I mess up, he’s going to tell me that looked terrible and when it was good, he’s going to tell me that it was good. That is the kind of feedback that I like, and I’m excited to continue to work with him. It was fun on Sunday hearing him with the play call for the first time. That’s how it is going to be. Practicing that and getting used to it was cool.”

Nix’s ability to make plays from a “dirty pocket” played a role in Payton’s decision to target the quarterback.

“When we watched all of his Oregon film, at times there are going to be a little penetration,” Payton said. “All of these guys in their pro days are showing us off-schedule throws. Some throws we would never even expect to do in a game. You saw in every game he played a dirty pocket, a quick plant step and ball out accurately. For some guys, that’s hard to do. They need a full stride in a clean pocket.

“In each game, whether it was climb up, escape right [or] climb, escape left or just move a little and release it, [Nix did it]. It served him well relative to the sack numbers. He became a tough sack because the ball is out. Now, you have to be able to process very quickly too. You saw that on film.”

Nix’s ability to stay calm and composed while moving the ball down the field will serve him well in the NFL.

“I described kind of a little bit of when you watched him play, you didn’t feel like you were in harm’s way a lot,” Payton said. “You felt like this guy was in the fairway quite a bit. Remember one of the commandments of this position: It’s not how many touchdown passes, it’s can you lead your team into the end zone and can you lead your team to score points? There’s a lot that goes with that, and that’s really how all these guys when their careers are done will be measured.”

Nix is set to become the team’s 14th starting quarterback in the post-Peyton Manning era. Payton went all in to draft Nix this spring and he’s now ready to go all-in with Nix in the 2024 season. There will undoubtedly be some growing pains along the way, but Payton believes the Broncos have found their new long-term quarterback.
