USA TODAY Sports Super 25 Regional Football Watchlist: Southeast region

Keep an eye on these teams in the Southeast region…

The 2023 high school football season has arrived, with teams kicking off across the country in August.

That means the first USA TODAY Sports Super 25 is nearing, which marks another start to an iconic franchise that began back in 1982.

Last year’s Super 25 was one of the tightest races of all time, as St. John Bosco (Calif.) narrowly won out over Mater Dei (Calif.) and Bishop Gorman (Nev.), as well as Texas power Duncanville and Miami Central (Fla.).

How will things stack up this season? Ahead of the opening Super 25, USA TODAY HSS is looking around the country at the five regions we use to create the national rankings:

Next up is the Southeast region, which includes schools from the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Ohio State offers 2024 Miami wide receiver already committed

The Buckeyes are looking to flip the Miami verbal #GoBucks

[autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] is very familiar with Florida high school powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas.

Former Buckeye brothers Joey and Nick Bosa prepped there, while a few others played there as well, so having Ohio State coaches in the building is a fairly common occurrence.

Although the Buckeye staff was on campus hosting recruits, that didn’t mean their eyes weren’t watching other prospects. Why do we know this? Well, late on Sunday night the Ohio State coaches offered 2024 wide receiver [autotag]Chance Robinson[/autotag] of STA.

The 6-foot, 2-inch, 190-pound Miami commit is ranked as the No. 23 player at his position and 151st overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Robinson is friends with current Buckeye commit Jeremiah Smith who seems to be commenting about the offer after sharing a childhood friend’s good news from Ohio State.

Smith has become one of the most vocal commitments of the 2024 group, even though he has made multiple official visits to places other than Columbus. It might be a coincidence, but it might not. What’s more important is that Ohio State has shown Robinson that he’s wanted in Scarlet and Gray.

ESPN will be broadcasting a couple of major high school football games at the outset of the 2023 season.

ESPN will broadcast several prominent high school football games at the outset of the 2023 season.

Sportscenter NEXT shared the announcement today on their Twitter page – the two games will feature St. Frances (Md.) vs. Chaminade-Madonna (Fla.), followed by St. John Bosco (Calif.) vs. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.).

All the teams have been perennial USA TODAY Sport Super 25 teams.

St. Frances may be the best high school team on the east coast. Last season they posted a record of 9-1 and finished at No. 10 in our final Super 25 of 2022. Meanwhile, Chaminade-Madonna went 13-1 and finished one spot higher.

St. John Bosco spent most of the season in second place in national rankings, but a win over Mater Dei (Calif.) in November helped them climb the top of the pile. They ended the 2022-23 season with a 13-1 record and ranked first on the final Super 25 list. Meanwhile, St. Thomas Aquinas went undefeated at 14-0 and finished in the No. 6 spot.

High school football heavyweights to battle in 2022 ESPN GEICO Kickoff

The 2022 high school football season is starting with a bang with the 2022 ESPN GEICO Kickoff.

The 2022 high school football season is starting with a bang with the 2022 ESPN GEICO Kickoff.

ESPN announced its doozy of a Kickoff field on Tuesday, with a doubleheader of St. Joseph’s Prep (Pa.) vs. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) followed by Los Alamitos (Calif.) vs. American Heritage (Fla.) on Aug. 27.

St. Thomas Aquinas finished ninth in the 2021 USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 rankings following a 14-1 season that resulted in a state championship. St. Joseph’s Prep returns a talented team in 2022, headlined by West Virginia linebacker commit Josiah Trotter.

American Heritage’s meeting with Los Alamitos might be the juiciest matchup of the Kickoff. Los Alamitos is led by five-star USC quarterback commit Malachi Nelson — the No. 2 recruit in the class of 2023 — and five-star athlete Makai Lemon, who is also committed to the Trojans. Los Alamitos also has four-star wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr., three-star athlete Ethan O’Connor, three-star defensive end Sinn Brennan and three-star running back Nygel Osborne.

American Heritage welcomes a new head coach in Mike Smith after Patrick Surtain joined the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff. Smith was previously the program’s strength and conditioning coach and takes over after a stretch that featured a 111-18 record since 2012 and state championships in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2020.

There are also a pair of heavyweight matchups outside of the Kickoff during the first weekend of the 2022 season. Defending national champion Mater Dei (Calif.) travels to Las Vegas to take on Nevada 5A champion Bishop Gorman, while St. John Bosco heads to Texas for a date with Allen.
