St. John’s at UConn picks and predictions

Prediction

UConn 80, St. John’s 74

Moneyline

PASS.

St. John’s is 0-4 on the road while UConn is 10-0 at home. The odds are justified and are unplayable both ways.

Against the spread

LEAN ST. JOHN’S +14.5 (-115).

The Red Storm have yet to be double-digit underdogs this season and aren’t that much worse than UConn, even on the road. They lost to Providence on the road 83-80 on Jan. 7. They have lost 4 of their last 5 games, none of which were by this amount.

UConn is just 1-2 ATS in its last 3 home games as well. UConn is also 2-5 ATS in conference games while St. John’s is 3-4. Considering the recent trends, back ST. JOHN’S +14.5 (-115).

Over/Under

BET OVER 151.5 (-105).

If there’s one thing both teams have been at it this season, it is hitting the projected Over. UConn has gone Over in 4 of its last 6 games and is 11-7 O/U this season. It is 7-3 O/U at home as well.

St. John’s is 9-8-1 O/U this season and has gone Over in 3 of its last 4. Both teams rank in the nation’s top 45 in points per game which suggests this game should be played at a high pace.

Put it all together and back the OVER 151.5 (-105).

The St. John’s Red Storm (9-4, 1-1 Big East) and UConn Huskies (10-4, 1-2) clash in a Big East battle Wednesday in Storrs, Conn. The contest at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion will get underway at 8:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the St. John’s vs. UConn odds and lines and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

St. John’s fell, 83-73, at Providence Saturday. The Red Storm was undone by a Friars five shooting 50.9% from the floor. The loss came in SJU’s second game off a 17-day layoff.

The Huskies also lost Saturday, falling 90-87, in an overtime battle at Seton Hall. UConn was clipped by the Pirates shooting a robust 54.2% from the field. And in that game, the Huskies were returning to action after 17 days off. Connecticut is 6-1 at home this season.

St. John’s at UConn odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

UConn 85, St. John’s 73

Money line

The differential here leaves a lot of room for the true odds to reside: PASS.

Against the spread

SJU is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games overall. The Red Storm is 0-5 ATS in its last five games against winning teams. The home team is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 series meetings.

St. John’s has been wildly inconsistent. The Storm hasn’t really performed well against top-200 types, and its ATS record is telling. It boasts the highest scoring average in the Big East (82.4 points per game), but SJU’s schedule so far has been easy.

Connecticut has more depth in real scoring options. And on defense, the Huskies rank in the top-10 in the nation in defending 2-point attempts and blocked shots.

TAKE THE HUSKIES -10.5 (-110).

Over/Under

Look for a decent number of 3s and a fair amount of quick scores (put-backs, turnover/transition baskets) and untimed attempts (free throws). It all adds up to more opportunities per minute than perhaps what the public is expecting. And that volume for shooters figures to be back to game rhythm after the missed time a couple weeks ago.

TAKE THE OVER 153.5 (-107).
