Mock trade sees Spurs land Dejounte Murray for 2-player package

In this mock trade, Dejounte Murray would be sent back to the San Antonio Spurs.

The San Antonio Spurs will be looking to help Victor Wembanyama. That means adding talent. They were connected to the Atlanta Hawks throughout the regular season regarding potential trade rumors, and a Dejounte Murray return could make sense for both sides involved. Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report recently wrote a mock deal that would send Murray back to San Antonio for Keldon Johnson, Devonte’ Graham, and two first-round picks (that previously belonged to Atlanta).

“Some teams can slowly build a winner around their star rookie, adding top draft picks over time before going all-in to chase a championship,” Swartz wrote. “However, Victor Wembanyama is good enough for the San Antonio Spurs to start making win-now moves immediately. With a 75-year-old head coach in Gregg Popovich, patience isn’t an option. Murray developed into an All-Star point guard with the Spurs, spending his first six seasons in San Antonio before being traded to the Hawks in 2022. That experiment has all but failed.

“A reunion with Popovich on a Spurs team that needs an upgrade at point guard makes too much sense not to happen.”

Having a guy like Murray running the show and helping set up Wembanyama on offense would be great for the Spurs.

Spurs should be hoping Luka Doncic becomes disgruntled in Dallas

The San Antonio Spurs should be hoping for Luka Doncic to become unhappy with the Dallas Mavericks.

The San Antonio Spurs need to pour all of their efforts into building a great team around Victor Wembanyama. The rookie sensation looks capable of leading a playoff team, so it’s up to San Antonio to help him. Tyler Watts of Air Alamo recently wrote an article detailing some players the Spurs should hope become disgruntled and want out of their current situation, and Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic made the list.

“Doncic would get to stay in Texas and play with another elite young talent. He loves to lob to his big men and has experience playing with Kristaps Porzingis in Dallas for two-plus years,” Watts wrote. “Wemby’s elite defense covers Luka’s biggest flaw, and the Spurs would be instant title threats with their dynamic European duo.

“Luka Doncic appears happy in Dallas, but things change fast in the NBA. The same could be said for the number one player on this list. He is always putting pressure on his organization and at some point could decide he wants to play elsewhere.”

Pairing Wembanyama with Doncic would create one of the best tandems in the league.

And while it seemed wildly unlikely that Curry would depart from Golden State, some betting outlets have the Spurs as favorites to land him should he leave.
