LeBron’s SpringHill Entertainment gets new investment, adds Serena Williams to board

The production company started by LeBron James and Maverick Carter is continuing to expand its reach.

The production company started by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, SpringHill Entertainment, confirmed to Deadline Hollywood on Thursday that they had secured a massive new investment and also added additional expertise on the SpringHill board of directors as they look to expand their reach.

According to the Deadline report, the investments into SpringHill from production powerhouse Sister, which created HBO’s Chernobyl, as well as several other investment groups, total upwards of $100 million. Sister’s executive chairman, Liz Murdoch, a member of the Murdoch media empire, has joined the SpringHill board of directors, as has Tennis superstar Serena Williams. Apollo Global Management Co-Founder Marc Rowan and Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino are also part of the board.

Alongside those new additions, longtime business partners Paul Wachter and Tom Werner also remain a part of the SpringHill board. With the addition of Murdoch and the global reach of their massive media empire, it likely won’t be long before folks in other countries start seeing SpringHill Entertainment on their screens.

Just like Klutch Sports, SpringHill Entertainment has its sights set on more than just being a long-term force in their business.

Feel Free to Comment Season 2, Ep. 2: ‘A Time to Punch’

In the next episode of Survivor’s Remorse, Cam Calloway feels the consequences of his myopic view of things.

Welcome back to another episode of Feel Free To Comment, our podcast about the LeBron James-produced series ‘Survivor’s Remorse’ that ran for four seasons on the premium cable network Starz. On today’s episode, we cover episode 2 of Season 2, where Cam Calloway continues to adjust to the additional responsibilities asked of him as an NBA star, and how that dynamic plays out with his family members.

In the last episode, Calloway’s attitude led to a heart-to-heart with the team owner, Jimmy Flaherty, as he laid out the additional responsibilities for a star other than playing. In the next, Calloway’s callous treatment of his family ends up biting him in a major way, leading to consequences on the court and for his reputation. Also, his sister Mary Charles has to confront some anger issues that have arisen due to her lack of direction in life.

Feel Free to Comment Season 1, Ep. 1: ‘In the Offing’

Sean Highkin and Erik Garcia Gundersen start with their first true episode of ‘Feel Free to Comment’ following ‘Survivor’s Remorse.’

Yesterday I introduced you to ‘Feel Free to Comment,’ a new podcast brought to you by myself and my friend Sean Highkin of Bleacher Report about the LeBron James/Maverick Carter-produced show ‘Survivor’s Remorse,’ that aired on Starz for four seasons. If you are still wondering why we have a podcast about this show, please listen to the first episode.

In the first official episode of ‘Feel Free to Comment,” Sean and I break down the pilot episode of the show, “In the Offing,” where a young Cam Calloway has just signed his first big-money contract after entering the unidentified pro basketball league that is the stand-in for the NBA.

The episode follows Calloway moving to his new city of Atlanta, alongside his manager/cousin Reggie Vaughn, and the rest of his family, who we meet in the episode. It also shows that even when success comes, it’s still impossible to escape where you grew up. Until you do.

‘Feel Free to Comment’ is available wherever you get your podcasts. Follow the podcast on Twitter and Instagram.

Maverick Carter recalls first time he and LeBron met Michael Jordan: ‘Black Jesus in the flesh’

Carter said that it was really like meeting “Black Jesus in the flesh” during UNINTERRUPTED’s after-show following “The Last Dance.”

With sports-loving people around the world tuning in to “The Last Dance” documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during their last season in 1997-98, people who were fortunate enough to meet the man over the years are sharing their stories from over the years as fans are all getting to see a different side of the legend. One of those people who recalls the awe they had when they met Jordan was LeBron James’ friend and business partner Maverick Carter, telling the story on the UNINTERRUPTED after-show alongside Chris Paul and Paul Rivera.

Carter talked about him and LeBron seeing Jordan get out of his red convertible and floating as he walked, as he said, like seeing “Black Jesus in the flesh.” He also says that it was when LeBron was in high school, where James and Carter spoke to him for about 45 minutes.

Earlier this week, LeBron also talked about being moved nearly to tears when he watched this weekend’s episodes of “The Last Dance,” which included Jordan being overcome with emotion when he won his first championship in 1991.

But while LeBron and his close circle are trying to be gracious about Jordan, some others are using it as an excuse to stay with the cheap shots.

Don Cheadle to play villain in ‘Space Jam 2,’ Paul Scheer says

Cheadle has long been a part of the project but his role wasn’t quite clear until his Black Monday co-star dropped it a few days ago.

As the boredom of being stuck inside during quarantine has been getting to people, there have been lots of untold stories getting dropped during these times. A few weeks ago, Carmelo Anthony told the story of the time LeBron James jumped off a boat to save his life. And then we got another bit of interesting LeBron news from an unexpected source, actor/comedian Paul Scheer.

During an episode of The Athletic’s ‘Clip City’ podcast, Scheer broke the news that Don Cheadle, with whom Scheer stars on the Showtime show ‘Black Monday,’ will play the villain in the ‘Space Jam 2,’ starring LeBron James.

Actually Don Cheadle, who I do ‘Black Monday’ with, he’s the bad guy in ‘Space Jam [2],’ and he said LeBron’s really great. He was great in ‘Trainwreck‘ too

(Hat-Tip to AwardsCircuit)

Cheadle has been a well-known part of the cast but it was previously unclear what his role would be in the reboot of the 1996 production. LeBron is expected to be joined by several other NBA and WNBA players, including Damian Lillard and Diana Taurasi.

‘I Promise’ school in Akron to be featured in new documentary series

The story of the school started by the Los Angeles Lakers star in his hometown of Akron, Ohio will air on the streaming platform Quibi.

Although the school has been profiled by media outlets of all kinds, rarely has there been the amount of access to the I Promise School in Akron, Ohio, started by LeBron James in 2018, as there is in an upcoming documentary series about the school, their students and their methods.

Quibi and SpringHill Entertainment announced a new production on Monday entitled “I PROMISE,” which will feature incredible access to the school, its students, staff, and of course, LeBron James, who is also an executive producer on the production. The documentary is being directed by Marc Levin, who created movies such as “Brick City,” and “Chicagoland.” They also released a trailer.

As you can see in the trailer, the “I PROMISE” documentary will follow the school in their first year as they try to help kids from poor backgrounds in the city of Akron get through school and eventually to college. The program began with 3rd and 4th graders because James wanted to make an impact on the lives of children as early as possible.

The school has also implemented emotional education, as they prioritize helping kids deal with trauma as well as the educational growth of their students.
