Mallex Smith got into an in-game debate with Ken Griffey Jr. about the legend’s ‘swag’

Ken Griffey Jr. says he has swag still.

Can we just mic MLB players up and listen to them talk in the middle of the game at all times? It’s the absolute best thing ever. Case in point: Mallex Smith’s conversation with Ken Griffey Jr. in the middle of his spring training came.

Smith was making fun of Griffey for looking “real dad-ish” today which, by the way, sounds like an absolutely delightful aesthetic.

Griffey wasn’t having that, though. He swore that he had “swag” every single day which is the exact thing that someone who looks real dad-ish would say when you call them dad-ish.

This conversation is hilarious.

Smith: “You was looking real dad-ish today.”

Griffey: “I’m supposed to. It’s spring training.”

Smith: “Maaaaan, you always looking dad-ish.”

Griffey: “I’ma look dad-ish around the people here.”

Smith: “Oh, you say you got swag when you leave the field?”

Griffey: “I got swag every day of the week.”

Listen, man. At 50 years old, Ken Griffey Jr. can look whatever way he wants to look. He will still forever be the coolest baseball player of all time. So when he says he still has swag, you absolutely believe he still has swag. Just listen to that “every day of the week” part again and you know it.

This conversation was wonderful. Please, baseball, give us more.

Zach Warren gets Grapefruit League win with Phillies

Zach Warren gets Grapefruit League win with Phillies.

CLEARWATER — Former University of Tennessee pitcher Zach Warren picked up a Grapefruit League win Monday afternoon as the Philadelphia Phillies outlasted the Baltimore Orioles, 8-7.

Warren, a Philadelphia farm hand for the last three seasons, pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Phillies (2-0 in the spring in 2020). He struck out the side in his lone frame of work at Spectrum Field.

Warren entered in the ninth inning with the game tied 7-7. He was able to nab the victory as Philadelphia plated the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

He pitched for the Volunteers between 2015-17 and compiled a 9-10 career record in three seasons on Rocky Top.

Warren was drafted in the 14th round of the MLB Amateur Draft by the Phillies.

The career minor leaguer was a non-roster invitee to the Phillies camp this season. The left hander has played in the Phillies organization for Clearwater (Florida State League), Lakewood (South Atlantic League) and Williamsport (NY-Penn League).

Rays fan’s acrobatic grab could end up being the best catch of the season

Get that guy a uniform.

We’re just a couple days into MLB spring training, and one Tampa Bay Rays fan showed up to the ballpark ready to play.

During Sunday’s Grapefruit League game against the New York Yankees at Charlotte Sports Park, the Rays’ Lucius Fox drove a curling foul ball towards the grassy area beyond right-field stands. The ball could have easily landed in that picnic area, but one Rays fan was determined to catch the ball on the fly.

And, oh man, did he ever earn it.

This fan channeled Odell Beckham Jr., and laid out in full extension to make the one-handed grab.

I mean, what a freaking catch. Let’s get this fan a non-roster invite. That effort deserves something.

The crowd gave this guy a deserved standing ovation to which he responded by taking a bow.

Sure, it’s just spring training, but we probably won’t see a better catch from a fan all season — it may be up there with the on-field product too.

Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play mix well with spring training baseball

What’s better than spring training baseball? How about a little golf on top courses before catching a game in the Cactus or Grapefruit leagues? Both Arizona and Florida, the annual homes to Major League Baseball’s spring training, are full of great courses.

Arizona might have an upper hand, as so many of the state’s top courses are clustered near the Phoenix area, the hub of spring training there. It’s entirely possible to play a quick, early-morning round, then catch a game in the afternoon.

The baseball is more spread out in Florida, with games stretching from the Tampa area, down the southwest coast and all the way across to the Atlantic coast. Some of the best golf, such as TPC Sawgrass, isn’t very close to spring training, but for fans driving south to catch a few games, there is plenty of great golf along the way.

Check out the top-ranked courses in each state to see where golf might best mix with any baseball plans. The members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on our 10 criteria. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings on each course are averaged to produce a final rating for each course. Then each course is ranked against other courses in its state to produce the final rankings.

Spring training games begin Feb. 21.
