Trayveon Williams: ‘fashion means a lot to me’

“I definitely feel like I have always been someone who stays true to what I like.”

Fashion and sports intersection has grown over the years and with the rise of social media, players are akin to fashion models when they walk through the tunnel on game day. Cincinnati Bengals running back Trayveon Williams shared what inspires his fashion sense both on and off the field.

“What inspires my clothes and my fashion statement is I feel like the way you dress is the first thing that makes a statement about yourself. You know confidence, the swagger, the charisma that you have within yourself. When I am stepping off the plane and they are taking pictures it first shows my charisma,” said Williams.

“Whether it is the outfit I am wearing for pregame walking through the tunnel it portrays what I am feeling that day, it portrays my image and allows me to tell a story about who I am in so many different ways.”

Athletes are not only being sponsored by existing fashion lines, but some are starting to produce their own. Williams recently did a collaboration with Goorin Bros, a hat making company, on The Bengal Tiger hat.

“There is a big quote that Deion Sanders used to go by, ‘If you look good, you feel good, you play good, and they pay good.’ I feel like I take that approach on the field, but also off the field with the way I dress. It is something that is very dear and important to me.”

Williams will not only be flaunting his style on game days, but will again be teaching a law school class at Texas A&M University School of Law on Name, Image, and Likeness with sports attorney and consultant Professor Alex Sinatra.

“Fashion is a lot to me and I have grown in my fashion over the years. Obviously everybody knows fashion comes into style and goes out of style. I definitely feel like I have always been someone who stays true to what I like.”

Some of the outfits Williams has sported over the years include bold patterns and colors, while his classroom style is classically chic.

The top 5 best-dressed WNBA teams of the 2023 season

WNBA players have stepped up their style and wardrobes this season.

WNBA players have stepped up their style and wardrobes this season. It is readily apparent they are some of the best-dressed professional athletes in the sports fashion game.

Top-tier outfits are gracing tunnel outfit pictures and it’s high time some of these athletes grace the covers of high-fashion magazines. Fashion brands would be wise to partner with these players.

And it is not just high-profile events like the WNBA draft or All-Star Weekend that are seeing gorgeous outfits from these players. Although players like Zia Cooke and Brea Beal ate up the orange carpet at the 2023 WNBA draft, the outfits are coming from regular game days both home and away.

Additionally, players are able to show their styles like never before, including custom-designed outfits. Chicago Sky’s Isabelle Harrison and Las Vegas Aces’ Jackie Young totally owned the All-Star Weekend festivities this year with their jaw-dropping outfits.

Women’s History Month Spotlight: Former NCAA national champion Sydney Carter

For Women’s History Month, Alex Sinatra is highlighting women who made an impact in sports. It begins with Sydney Carter.

This Women’s History Month, I will be spotlighting women athletes and their achievements in college, after college, and beyond. Athletes are Humans First and while I want to highlight their athletic ability and achievements, I also want to point a spotlight on what they are doing off their field of play.

The first athlete up is Sydney Carter, former WNBA player and 2011 National Champion with Texas A&M University, who is now coaching for the University of Texas as their Director of Player Development. Coach Vic Schaefer, who coached her at Texas A&M University, hired Carter in 2022.

“We are very happy to be able to announce the addition of Sydney Carter to our staff here at the University of Texas,” Schaefer said in a school press release. “She brings so much to the table that will help our student-athletes succeed and become the best they can possibly be, both on and off the floor.

“As our director of player development, she will be able to impact our kids in so many different ways and help represent our program in a positive manner. We are very blessed to have her on The Forty Acres.”

Carter is having a huge impact on the program which is currently ranked 12th nationally. However, her impact off the court is equally, if not more, impressive. She made headlines in 2022 because of her fierce and unique on-court style.

This outfit drew wild criticism from some who thought she looked “unprofessional.” However, Carter loves fashion and didn’t back down from the unwarranted criticism. She used it as a teaching moment.

“I literally post every [game day] outfit,” she told Yahoo! Life, adding, “I just think that people are uncomfortable with a Black woman being in a power position.” She said that for some, “When you see a Black woman who is actually confident and embracing herself, I think that that’s very intimidating.”

Carter has since built a sort of fashion empire even attending New York Fashion Week as an invited guest of the Veronica Beard brand.

“We believe in enduring personal style. We believe in the doers and makers, the movers and shakers. We believe that a dream wardrobe has to work for real life. Look good, feel good, do good,” the Veronica Beard website states. They chose a great one in Carter because she encompasses and embodies the brand perfectly.

Carter’s story is far from over, but we can learn a thing or two from her current journey. Being yourself might not always be popular, but those who understand you will have your back, and those who need to hear your story will find strength in your journey. Thank you, Sydney for showing women in sports that we belong and we can be ourselves.
