Betting 101 – How to bet on the Detroit Red Wings for beginner bettors

How to bet on the Red Wings: Bet types

Money line (ML) NHL betting

The simplest form of sports betting and the first stop of all hockey bettors. The money line sets odds representing an implied win probability for both teams. Odds may range from -200 for a favorite to +200 for an underdog, or extend in either direction for more lopsided matchups.

The most common two-way lines are for a winner either in regulation, overtime or a shootout. Three-way lines can be set and include overtime and shootouts as a “tie” for a third option at higher odds.

Against the spread (ATS) NHL betting

Spread betting, also known as the puck line, is much less popular in hockey than it is in either football or basketball. Almost always, the line will be set at +/- 1.5 and asks whether a favorite will win by 1 or more goals. Odds are typically equal on either side of the line and most commonly range from -120 to +120.

Alternate lines of +/- 2.5 can be found for a greater profit on favorites should they win by 3 or more goals or as a safer play for the underdog to stay within 2 goals in a loss.

Over/Under (O/U) NHL betting

Most NHL games end in a goal total of either 5 or 6. The Over/Under is usually set at 5.5 with equal odds on either side asking whether the two teams will combine to score more or fewer than 5 goals.

Like spreads, alternate lines exist with more profitable odds or as a safer play with a higher implied win probability on one side.

How to bet on the Red Wings: NHL futures

Instead of betting on a specific game, get some action on the Red Wings’ 2021 season as a whole or on certain players like captain Dylan Larkin.

NHL Future Betting to win the Stanley Cup can range from +650 for a favorite like the Colorado Avalanche to the Red Wings’ +10000 long-shot odds.

At +10000, the Wings have an implied win probability of just 0.99%, but a $10 bet would return a profit of $1,000 if they pull it off.

Player futures exist for the Hart Trophy (MVP), Vezina Trophy (top goaltender) and other end-of-season awards, or as Over/Under lines for goal or point totals.

NBA Betting 101 – How to bet on the Detroit Pistons for beginner bettors

Looking to place a legal sports bet on the Detroit Pistons? We look at the best betting options for beginner bettors.

With Michigan legal sports betting activating, Michigan residents can begin placing legal, online Detroit Pistons bets as of Friday, January 22.

New to sports betting? SportsbookWire has you covered with a sports betting 101 guide to NBA betting, covering the money line, against the spread, Over/Under and mobile betting.

Be sure to sign up at BetMGM Sportsbook for their risk-free offer for new sports-betting customers within Michigan.

How to bet on the Pistons: Bet types

Money line (ML) NBA betting

The money line is the simplest and quickest way to get action on any NBA game. Each team is assigned odds representing an implied win probability for the game. Odds will generally range from -500 for a favorite up to +500 for underdogs, but they can extend further in either direction for more lopsided matchups.

The standings, recent success, injuries and public betting action are all weighed into the odds. Odds and lines can shift throughout the day based on injury reports or lopsided action on one team.

Against the spread (ATS) NBA betting

Spread betting is the most popular and most consistently profitable way to get action when betting basketball. Instead of a lopsided money line, the favorite is assigned a number of points by which it needs to win the game in order to cover the spread. If the underdog stays within that number of points in a loss or pulls off the outright upset, their side of the bet will win.

Odds are generally equal on either side of the line and will range from -130 to +130.

Example: Let’s say the Pistons are 4.5-point favorites (-4.5) against the Charlotte Hornets. If the Pistons win by 5 or more points, their side of the bet will cash. If the Hornets (+4.5) lose by 4 or fewer points or win the game, their side of the bet pays out.

Over/Under (O/U) NBA betting

Over/Under betting in basketball is considered much more difficult than in football, hockey, or even baseball. Streaky shooting, surprising player usage or foul trouble all create volatility in predicting the final score of a game.

Game totals typically range from 210.5 to 240.5 for the combined point totals of both teams. A total below a line of 210.5 would cash Under tickets and a total of 211 or more points cashes Over tickets.

Like the spread, odds are generally equal on both sides at conservative numbers ranging from -130 to +130.

How to bet on the Pistons: NBA futures

Instead of betting on a specific game, get some action on the Pistons’ 2020-21 season as a whole or on certain players like PF Blake Griffin. NBA future betting to win the NBA Championship can range from +250 for a favorite like the Los Angeles Lakers to the Pistons’ +50000 long-shot odds.

At +50000, the Pistons have an implied win probability of just 0.20%, but a $10 bet would return a profit of $5,000 if they pull it off.

Player futures exist for end-of-season awards like MVP or Defensive Player of the Year.

How to bet on the Pistons: Live/mobile betting

BetMGM has an excellent sports-betting mobile app that allows Pistons fans to get some action on a game from the opening tip to the dying minutes. Odds and lines adjust throughout the game to reflect the score or current events such as scoring streaks or which players are on the court.
