Bills’ Spencer Brown provides injury update

Bills’ Spencer Brown provides injury update

It’s unclear if the Buffalo Bills will have their full offensive line when the team hosts the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 11.

The Bills (8-2) have had one of the top offensive lines in the NFL this year. Pro Football Focus currently ranks Buffalo’s front as the seventh-best in football.

However, one of their rocks might not play against the Chiefs (9-0) in what is a huge showdown.

Earlier in the week, head coach Sean McDermott said via video conference he was “hopeful” right tackle Spencer Brown would both practice and play. On Wednesday and Thursday, Brown did not practice at all, which is not a good sign.

Even so, Brown told reporters he’s remaining positive.

“Optimistic for Sunday,” Brown said. “Hopefully I can go on Sunday.”

Bills at Texans: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 5

The Buffalo Bills will visit the Houston Texans in their upcoming Week 5 matchup.

Even with it being a an AFC clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Texans contest:

CB Rasul Douglas vs. WR Nico Collins

(Imagn)

Not Stefon Diggs?! Well, the former Bills player is not the Texans’ No. 1 playmaker. That’s Collins and he has burst onto the NFL scene. Douglas and fellow outside cornerback Christian Benford have played great this season and this will be a fun matchup to watch.

OL Spencer Brown vs. DE Will Anderson Jr.

(Getty)

Brown had a poor outing against the Baltimore Ravens in a 35-10 loss last week. He needs to be better. Pro Football Focus graded him as Buffalo’s worst offensive lineman in that outing.

Anderson, the No. 3 overall draft pick in 2023, was selected there for good reason: He is good. Anderson has 2.5 sacks so far this this season.

DE Greg Rousseau vs. OL Laremy Tunsil

(USAT)

Von Miller was having a good season… and now he’s suspended for four games. Rousseau will be someone who needs to help fill that pass-rushing void and he could see plenty of Tunsil. The tackle has dealt with an ankle injury which is something the Bills’ pass rush could hope hampers his game.

Former NFL offensive lineman on Bills’ Spencer Brown: ‘He’s never played better’

Former NFL offensive lineman on Bills’ Spencer Brown: ‘He’s never played better’

Buffalo Bills’ fourth-year right tackle Spencer Brown is fresh off of signing a four-year contract extension in the offseason and is now playing the best football of his life through three weeks of the 2024 NFL season.

According to Next Gen Stats, Brown is the only offensive lineman in the NFL with at least 25 pass-blocking snaps and zero pressures allowed.

He is playing a major part of a Bills offensive line that has allowed the fewest sacks through three weeks of a Bills season since 2012.

Former NFL offensive lineman and current NFL Network and Fox Sports analyst Brian Baldinger took to social media this week to voice his praise for the former third-rounder out of Northern Iowa. While analyzing the film of Brown’s performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3, Baldinger had this to say:

“Spencer Brown is playing great football. You look at right tackles in this business… they see great pass rushers every week at that position. He’s gotten better… good coaching by Aaron Kromer. This Bills offensive line is a strength of this team.”

PFF: Bills offensive line ranked as top-three in NFL

PFF: Bills offensive line ranked as top-three in NFL

The Buffalo Bills have gotten off to a hot start offensively in 2024, and their offensive line is being recognized for their part in the success.

Pro Football Focus ranked every offensive line in the NFL ahead of Week 4, and the Bills (3-0) found themselves ranked third in the league.

Last week, the Bills ranked tenth in PFF’s ranking. This week they moved up seven spots after Allen was kept clean on ‘Monday Night Football’ against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3.

The Bills have scored the most points in the league (37.3 ppg) and quarterback Josh Allen has taken the least amount of sacks (2) for QBs who have started all three games.

Currently, PFF grades the Bills’ starting offensive line as follows:

  • Dion Dawkins: 69.4
  • David Edwards: 62.5
  • Connor McGovern: 65.8
  • O’Cyrus Torrence: 44.3
  • Spencer Brown: 63.6

PFF’s full breakdown of the Bills offensive line can be found below:

The Buffalo offensive line did not allow a single sack or quarterback hit in the team’s win over Jacksonville. As a result, the unit placed eighth in PFF pass-blocking efficiency score in Week 3. They have yet to give up either a sack or a quarterback hit this season and rank fifth in PFF pass-blocking efficiency after three games.

Spencer Brown’s breakout season continued with another strong outing in Week 3. The right tackle’s 81.0 PFF pass-blocking grade ranks third at the position.

Best player: Dion Dawkins

Dawkins has allowed pressure on 2.2% of pass plays this season, which is the fourth-best rate among all offensive tackles.

Bills at Dolphins: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 2

#Bills at #Dolphins: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 2:

The Buffalo Bills will visit the Miami Dolphins in their upcoming Week 2 matchup.

Even with it being a cross-conference clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Thursday’s Bills-Dolphins contest:

CB Rasul Douglas vs. WR Tyreek Hill

(USAT)

The Bills have mentioned one word in particular about the Miami offense this week: Speed. Who is the best example of that? Hill.

A shifty receiver that lines up in the slot plenty, Hill lining up against Cam Lewis, who is likely to start for Taron Johnson (forearm)… might be a bad idea for the Bills. Expect Douglas to cover Hill a lot. Marvin Harrison Jr. is a rookie, but a highly touted one. Douglas shut him down in his NFL debut last week.

OL Spencer Brown vs. DE Jaelan Phillips

(USAT)

Fresh off signing a long-term extension with the Bills, Brown will have one of his first best tests against Phillips.

Phillips returned from a big injury in 2023 last week and notched a sack in Miami’s late win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is still going to be fired up about that. Pro Football Focus graded Phillips as the NFL’s 10th best pass rusher in Week 1 with a 75.6 overall mark.

WR Khalil Shakir vs. CB Kader Kohou

Finishing up on offense, the Bills relied on Shakir over the likes of tight end Dalton Kincaid in Week 1. Shakir showed he has previous chemistry with quarterback Josh Allen in the Bills’ win over the Cardinals and his touchdown was impressive.

In the slot, Kohou struggled in Miami’s opener. Of 94 qualifying cornerbacks in Week 1, Kohou’s PFF grade of 41.1  was No. 91 overall in the NFL. That’s a battle Shakir should win.

Bills’ Spencer Brown on extension: ‘Buffalo is the city for me’

#Bills’ Spencer Brown on extension: ‘Buffalo is the city for me’

Spencer Brown is sticking around western New York and he could not be happier.

On Friday, the Buffalo Bills announced that the 26-year-old inked an extension with the team. Terms of the deal were not announced but the Bills confirmed he’s now signed through the 2028 season.

Brown, 26, was Buffalo’s third-round selection at the 2021 NFL draft. Viewed as a raw prospect out of Northern Iowa, Brown had a slow start to his NFL career and injuries did not help.

Speaking at a press conference after signing his extension, Brown said he wanted to stay put.

“Buffalo is the city for me,” Brown said per the Buffalo News. “It’s a city that goes well my morals, my style of living, and that’s why I didn’t want to leave at all.”

In terms of his journey, Brown mentioned how persevering through injuries and putting trust in himself is what got him to this point.

Bills, OL Spencer Brown agree to contract extension

#Bills, OL Spencer Brown agree to contract extension:

The Buffalo Bills and offensive lineman Spencer Brown have agreed to a contract extension.

Just days prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season and the Bills’ first game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1, Brown has been inked to a four-year extension. He is signed through the 2028 season, the team has announced:

https://twitter.com/BuffaloBills/status/1832124172329480603

Terms of the extension have yet to be reported.

Brown, 26, was Buffalo’s third-round selection at the 2021 NFL draft. Viewed as a raw prospect out of Northern Iowa, Brown had a slow start to his NFL career and injuries did not help.

In 2023, Brown had a huge campaign. Pro Football Focus graded Brown a 68.1 overall for his efforts last season, a career-best from the football analytics outlet.

Brown will play on the final year of his rookie contract before his extension kicks in next season. That indicates that the Bills did not want to risk losing Brown after the 2024 season when he would have become a free agent.

Bills Wire will continue to provide all roster updates throughout the 2024 season.

Spencer Brown on which player Bills fans should not overlook

Spencer Brown on which player Bills fans should not overlook:

Spencer Brown is a big fan of his linemate.

Brown appeared on the “Centered on Buffalo” podcast with Eric Wood and had nothing but good things to say about a guy who makes his life easier.

Brown lines up at right tackle and 2023 second-round pick O’Cyrus Torrence is next to him at guard. And what Brown says makes sense.

Most NFL draft pundits expected Torrence to be a first-round selection in 2023. He was not and fell to the Bills at No. 59 overall.

Brown was asked about a player that might be “overlooked” by fans and Torrence was the one he named. Brown’s reasoning was based on how seamlessly Torrence translated his game from college to the pros.

Think about it, did you complain about Torrence much as a rookie? Few did, and Brown was not one of them.

Brent Venables provides injury update to trio of Sooners starters

The Oklahoma Sooners could get back some key personnel for their week two matchup with the Houston Cougars.

The Oklahoma Sooners are dealing with a rash of injuries to key personnel on the offensive side of the ball.

Wide receiver [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag] and offensive tackle [autotag]Jake Taylor[/autotag] missed Friday’s win over Temple. Starting center [autotag]Branson Hickman[/autotag] was lost due to an ankle sprain in the first quarter.

All three have a chance to be back for Week 2 against the Houston Cougars.

On his weekly coach’s show, Sooners head coach [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] shared that Branson Hickman looked good at practice Monday evening but is questionable for this week’s showdown with Houston. If he were unable to go, Oklahoma could go with [autotag]Geirean Hatchett[/autotag], the Washington transfer who slid over to center in the first half after Hickman went down. Or, they could roll with [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], who made a lot of noise in fall camp for his work and his improvement. He was banged up toward the end of the August and didn’t play until the second half last week against Temple.

The Oklahoma Sooners need [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag] back. The Sooners were already down [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag], who was ruled out for the year during fall camp. Then, they lost Jalil Farooq for 6 to 8 weeks with a broken foot. The Sooners’ wide receiver depth is pretty thin at this point. Getting Anderson back would provide a huge boost to the passing attack. He had nearly 800 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns in 2023 and was expected to be a significant part of the offense this year, but has been hobbled since fall camp.

The projected starter most likely to return this week, and one the Sooners need to get in the mix, is right tackle [autotag]Jake Taylor[/autotag]. Taylor had a strong offseason and beat out [autotag]Spencer Brown[/autotag] to earn the starting role along Bill Bedenbaugh’s offensive line. His unavailability was noticeable against Temple, as the Sooners had a hard time blocking on the right side of the formation.

At some point, the Oklahoma Sooners need to begin building continuity and cohesion with their offensive line. But the injuries they’re dealing with makes that difficult. If Taylor and Hickman can go this week and next against Tulane, it will give the Sooners an opportunity to see their starting five together for a couple of weeks before the Tennessee Volunteers roll into town.

Bills’ Spencer Brown admits cardinal Buffalo sin: He is a ranch guy

Oh no:

Don’t shoot the messenger (in fact, just leave the starting right tackle alone as well) but the Buffalo Bills have a ranch on chicken wings guy on their roster.

Bills offensive lineman Spencer Brown joined another former Buffalo O-lineman, Eric Wood, on his podcast this summer and discussed his taste in chicken wings. While chatting on “Centered on Buffalo,” Brown admitted it, he is a ranch guy.

Brown also noted plenty of other interesting nuggets on himself, including some pre-game rituals. The full discussion can be found in the clip below:
