South Florida at East Carolina odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s South Florida Bulls at East Carolina Pirates odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The South Florida Bulls (2-5, 1-2 AAC) travel to meet the East Carolina Pirates (3-4, 1-2) Thursday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, N.C. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the South Florida vs. East Carolina odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Bulls are coming off their most impressive win of the season against an FBS opponent, spanking Temple 34-14 in Tampa (as 2-point favorites) to cover in consecutive games for the first time this season. The defense also allowed a season-low in points.

The Pirates lost a 31-24 overtime heartbreaker in Houston but easily covered as 13.5-point underdogs. East Carolina has covered three straight outings, and it’s 2-1 overall and 1-1-1 against the spread at “Rowdy Dowdy” this season, going Under in two of those games.

South Florida at East Carolina odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

East Carolina 31, South Florida 26

Money line

East Carolina (-380) will cost you 3.8 times your potential return. That’s a hefty wager on a team under .500.

AVOID.

Against the spread

SOUTH FLORIDA +9.5 (-102) is the play coming off its most impressive showing of the season. The defense shut down Temple last week, allowing just 48 yards on the ground and 183 yards through the air while gashing the Owls for 421 yards on the ground. USF also had 34 first downs to just eight for the Owls.

East Carolina should be able to win the game, but traditionally, it has struggled with USF. The Bulls lead the all-time series 9-2 and have covered seven of the past nine in the series with a 4-1 ATS mark in Greenville.

Over/Under

OVER 55.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play. The Over is 6-0-1 in the past seven for USF against teams with a losing overall record, while going 6-2-1 in the previous nine inside the AAC.

For East Carolina, most of the trends point to the Under lately, but the Over is 9-4 in the past 13 games following a straight-up loss. The Over is also 11-5 in the previous 16 against league foes.

South Florida at NC State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s South Florida at NC State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The South Florida Bulls meet the NC State Wolfpack Thursday in the season opener for both teams at Carter-Finley Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the South Florida at NC State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Bulls kick off their second season under head coach Jeff Scott looking to take a step forward. If they’re going to improve from a year ago, they need better ball protection after coughing it up 17 times in just nine games. They also allowed 39.9 PPG and 6.1 yards per play on defense in 2020.

The Wolfpack flipped the script in 2020, winning eight games after prevailing in just four in 2019. They’ll welcome back QB Devin Leary, and will be right there nipping at the heels of Clemson. NC State averaged 30.2 points per game in 2020, and that’s bad news for USF.

South Florida at NC State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

NC State 41, South Florida 20

Money line

NC State (-1000) will cost you 10 times your potential return. That’s just not a good long-term wagering strategy, especially in the early stages of the season.

AVOID and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

The lean is to NC STATE -19.5 (-112) at home. South Florida really struggled defensively and it had a difficult time on the offensive end. The Wolfpack will be playing in front of a raucous crowd after dealing with a limited capacity a year ago. The return of Leary is also a shot in the arm for the home side, which is expected to roll.

Over/Under

The OVER 58.5 (-108) is the play here, but you’ll need NC State to do most of the heavy lifting. USF stumbled on offense, and it’s uncertain if it will be able to cobble together much in this tough opening-game assignment on the road in front of a hostile crowd.

Rankings courtesy of Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Money line: South Florida +1500 (bet $100 to win $1,500) | Houston -5000 (bet $5,000 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: South Florida +18.5 (-110) | Houston -18.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 131.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

South Florida at Houston: Three things to know

  1. Houston has won and covered back-to-back games against Cincinnati and Western Kentucky after a 68-63 loss at Wichita State on Feb. 18. The Cougars were favored by 11.5 or more points in each of the games at home.
  2. USF is coming off a 65-47 loss against Temple as 5.5-point favorites. The 47 points were a season-low, and they have scored 65 or fewer points in four of the past five. The Bulls are 1-4 SU/ATS during the five-game stretch.
  3. The Cougars won the first meeting against the Bulls in Tampa on Feb. 10, winning 82-65 as 12.5-point favorites. Houston has covered nine of their past 10 games as a favorite of 9.5 or more points.

Against the spread (ATS)

HOUSTON -18.5 (-110) is facing its highest spread since Dec. 20 when they were favored by 33.5 points against Alcorn State. They just missed the cover that day, winning 88-55. They were able to cover as 21.5 points in the opener against Lamar, 89-45, on Nov. 25.

The Cougars are 6-0 ATS in the past six home games, and they’re 9-2 ATS across the past 11 games overall. The favorite is also 7-1 ATS in the past eight meetings in this series.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 131.5 (-110) is the lean in this one. Houston isn’t really a prolific offense, but they have posted 81 or more points in each of the past three as a double-digit favorite. If they hit that number again, even if the Bulls struggle mightily the Over has a more than a good chance of cashing.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Houston -12.5 (-105) | South Florida +12.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 128.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Houston at South Florida: Three things to know

  1. USF will play its first game since Jan. 9. The Bulls had six games postponed after having the pause button pressed on its season due to COVID-19 protocols within the program.
  2. Houston’s last road game was an 82-73 loss at East Carolina as a 16.5-point favorite Feb 3. USF’s most recent game was also at ECU, and the Bulls came away with a 69-63 win on Jan. 9.
  3. The Cougars played Our Lady of the Lake last time out in a non-conference tilt, throttling the NAIA opponent by a 112-46 score. Houston has won nine of the past 10 games overall, while covering six of its past seven games. The Cougars are 12-5 ATS on the season, and they have not failed to cover in consecutive games.

Houston at South Florida: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Houston 71, South Florida 55

Money line (ML)

Houston (-1000) should be able to bounce back from its lost last week at East Carolina. However, you cannot risk 10 times your potential return on a team which has lost two of its past five road games straight up. The Cougars are just a different team away from home, and much harder to predict. AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

While HOUSTON -12.5 (-105) has been a bit erratic on the road, it’s still a top-tier team challenging for a two or three seed in the NCAA Tournament this spring.

South Florida returns from a monthlong pause, so it’s uncertain what we’re going to get. The Bulls will be fresh and excited to resume their season, but facing a top 10 team isn’t likely a recipe for success in their return.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 128.5 (-110) is the lean in this AAC battle. Houston isn’t a high-octane offense, averaging 76.2 PPG to rank 80th in the nation. The Cougars are just 252nd in field-goal percentage, too, hitting at a 42.4 percent clip. Defensively, the Cougs rank second with 56.9 PPG allowed, and they’re first in defensive field-goal percentage at 36.1%.

Look for USF to fire out of the chute, as its exuberance shows early. But the Bulls will struggle to score against the Cougars’ suffocating defense.

South Florida at Memphis odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s South Florida at Memphis sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The South Florida Bulls (1-5, 0-4 AAC) and Memphis Tigers (3-2, 2-2) meet at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis for a 12 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday. Below, we analyze the South Florida-Memphis college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

South Florida at Memphis: Betting odds and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 8:00 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: South Florida +550 (bet $100 to win $550) | Memphis -834 (bet $834 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: South Florida +18 (-110) | Memphis -18 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 64.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

South Florida at Memphis: Three things to know

  1. South Florida opened the season with a 27-6 win over The Citadel, but they’re 0-5 SU/2-3 ATS across the past five outings. Defense has been the biggest issue for the Bulls, as they’re coughing up 41.0 PPG in five games against FBS opponents.
  2. Memphis took it on the chin in Cincinnati last time out on Halloween, falling 49-10. They’re now just 1-4 ATS in their five games so far, so something’s gotta give in this one. Despite last week’s offensive slowdown, the Tigers are still averaging 33.0 PPG while allowing 36.2 PPG in five outings. Memphis is allowing 556.8 total yards per game and 406.4 passing yards per game.
  3. Tigers QB Brady White has been rolling up big numbers, completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 1,691 yards, 18 touchdowns and just four interceptions while also running for a score. He has thrown for at least three TDs in four of his five outings.

South Florida at Memphis: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Memphis 51, South Florida 24

Money line (ML)

Memphis (-834) should get back on track here, as South Florida (+550) has been the elixir to cure all ills this season. However, you cannot risk more than eight times your potential return, so look to the spread. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

MEMPHIS (-18, -110) is going to turn White loose, and South Florida (+18, -110) will offer very little in the way of resistance. The Bulls are just 8-17 ATS in the past 25 inside the league, and 2-6 ATS in their past eight against teams with a winning record. The Tigers have cashed in eight of the previous 11 following a straight-up loss, and they’re certain to be rather ornery after getting embarrassed last time out.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 64.5 (-110) is a strong play, as the Bulls are yielding 35.2 PPG to rank 85th in the nation. The Tigers will find plenty of open spaces for big plays in the offense, and they should put up plenty of points. The Over is 21-8-1 in the past 30 at home for Memphis, and 10-4-1 in the past 15 AAC games.
