Just one more win.

South Alabama has put together an interesting season with a strong defense that’s great against the run, good at getting off the field, and second in the conference in total D.

The style might not always be scintillating, but it’s effective.

The passing game is efficient, there aren’t a lot of mistakes, and the team controls the clock better than anyone in the Sun Belt. The team has the right blend of positives to bother Appalachian State, and now it’s just one more win away from being bowl eligible.

Yeah, the offense has been okay, and the defense has held firm, but the success has mostly worked against the mediocre teams.

South Alabama pushed Troy, and lost. It pushed Louisiana, and lost. It plays games close and tight, but it’s not always into opening things up and taking shots down the field – there aren’t a lot of big plays.

Appalachian State’s running game is roaring, ripping through Coastal Carolina and everyone else over the last several games but Louisiana – the lone loss since the defeat to Miami early in the season.

Louisiana and Texas State were able to run well on South Alabama, and App State will, too.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, South Alabama is just one win away from bowl eligibility, but after this is a trip to Tennessee before closing out against Coastal Carolina – it needs this. It won’t get it.

Appalachian State has to keep pressing. It’s in the driver’s seat for the Sun Belt East title, but it still has to deal with Troy before closing with Georgia Southern. It’s not going to run wild on the South Alabama defense, but it’ll be effective enough to control the clock against a team that has to control the time of possession battle.

Can the Jaguars finally put it all together to get the one win to get bowl eligible?

It’s not hard. They win when the offense is great, the lose when it isn’t.

They got through the first three games against awful teams to build up a 3-0 start, and since then when they get to 420 yards or more, they win, when they don’t they lose.

That’s going to be tough against the Troy defense, but as long as the passing game can keep things moving, the defense should be able to take care of the rest.

Why Troy Will Win

Troy’s run defense is terrific, and that’s partially because the pass rush is among the best in the country. The South Alabama offensive line is good in pass protection, but it’s not good enough to deal with what’s coming.

The deadly combination of Javon Solomon and Richard Jibunor are too good and too relentless for the nation’s leading team in tackles for loss and isn’t far off in sacks.

The offense has enough balance and versatility to keep everything moving, but it’s that defensive front that has to take over right away and get the Jaguar O off the field.

South Alabama will throw well enough, and then the Troy defense will clamp down with that pass rush.

The O will get going from the start.

The defense might not be doing a whole lot of anything, but the passing game should hit 300 yards, and the team is a wee bit rested with nine days off since pushing Louisiana way too hard in a 28-27 loss.

Layne Hatcher doesn’t throw interceptions, he’ll drive the ball down the field, and now he and the attack should be give South Alabama’s secondary all it can handle.

The Jaguar defense has been solid all year, but it’s coming off a rough day in a shootout loss to ULM – it gave up 369 yards through the air – and hasn’t played a whole slew of high-powered passing teams.

This is the worst defense South Alabama has played.

Arkansas State is dead last in America in total D, allowing 579 yards per game, and it’s not getting better.

The Red Wolves allowed 540 yards or more in every game since the opener against Central Arkansas, and now they have to deal with an effective and efficient South Alabama passing attack that’s been terrific over the last few weeks.

The Jaguar ground attack doesn’t do a whole lot, but this is the game to take the pressure off of QB Jake Bentley. The Arkansas State defensive front allowed 200 rushing yards or more in every game but the opener, and gave up over 1,200 yards on the ground over the last three outings.

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas State played one of its best games of the season last week against the Ragin’ Cajuns, and it should give South Alabama a hard time in a bit of a shootout.

ULM doesn’t have the most dangerous of attacks, and it went off on the Jaguars last week. However, as always, Arkansas State will put up a ton of yards and points, and its opponent will do a little bit more.

The South Alabama offense has been fine over the last few games, but it hasn’t been enough in tight losses to Louisiana and Texas State. The problem?

The run defense.

Great over the first three games, the Jaguar D gave up 225 yards on the ground to the Ragin’ Cajuns and 212 to the Bobcats – those were the only two times the program allowed more than 200 on the year.

The Eagles are a bit more versatile than normal, but the lack of efficiency with the passing game, the inability to get moving on third downs, and a defense that’s giving up yards in chunks is just a part of the puzzle.

It’ll take a massive performance by the ground game, but South Alabama is No. 1 in the nation in third down stops, the line isn’t bad at getting into the backfield, and the offense is able to move just enough to control the time of possession.

South Alabama College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– There were signs last year. The offense had a few good moments when everything looked sharp and effective, but there weren’t enough of them. The O died, though, over the second half of the season and ended up scoring 17 points or fewer six times in the last nine games. The new coaching staff should fix that.

– New head coach Kane Wommack is a young, talented head coach who might be more for the defensive side, but offensive coordinator Major Applewhite should be able to pump up the attack. He has the pieces to do it, starting with South Carolina/Utah transfer quarterback Jake Bentley to likely take over the offense if veteran Demond Trotter doesn’t keep the gig.

The receiving corps is potentially terrific. Junior Jalen Tolbert is a big-time playmaker, but Kawaan Baker is gone after finishing second on the team with 51 catches with eight touchdowns. Throw in 6-2 Jalen Wayne and 6-0, 200-pound Cade Sutherland join the 6-3 Tolbert as part of a very big, very good group. Now …

– The offensive line has to be a whole lot better. It struggled to get the running game going and had an even harder time in pass protection. It’s going to be a new puzzle the coaching staff has to put together, but a few transfers should help the options to play around with.

Making things even tougher is the suspension of RB Carlos Davis, the team’s leading rusher with 674 yards. Junior Terrion Avery is a smallish, quick back who was second on the team with 180 yards, and 210-pound Jared Wilson will do more as the possible main man who can bring a bit more thump.

– The South Alabama offense needs to finally find a punch. It need a positive identity with its spread attack, and offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield has to start coming up with ways to move the chains.

The O averaged just 330 yards and 18.4 scores per game after scoring 17 points or fewer 13 times over the two seasons under head man Steve Campbell. Everything is fine when the team scores 31 or more, but it’s been only able to do that seven times in the last two seasons, going 5-2.

– The passing game that was woefully inefficient and finished with just 1,906 yards and 14 scores with 11 picks gets back Desmond Trotter after he got his feet wet in his freshman season. With eight touchdown passes and two picks, he moved the O and pushed the ball down the field.

Backup Cephus Johnson is leaving, but Tanner McGee and JUCO transfer Chance Lovertich will get their shots.

The receiving corps should get back six of the top seven wideouts, starting with 6-1, 210-pound Kawaan Baker, who led the team with 35 catches for 574 yards and three scores. 6-3, 195-pound junior Jalen Tolbert was the most explosive receiver, averaging over 19 yards per catch with a team-high six scores on 27 catches.

– Tra Minter was one of the team’s offensive bright spots with 1,057 rushing yards and five scores, but he’s gone. Backup Carlos Davis is a 205-pound sophomore who ran for 261 yards and two scores, and 220-pound Jared Wilson can pound away a bit. They’ll work behind a line that gets back four starters. This group will be strong for the ground game around 325-pound potential all-star Jacob Shoemaker.
