Thor from ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ represents peak performance says powerlifting champion

You may not like it, but this is literally what peak performance looks like.

Ever since God of War: Ragnarok made its gameplay debut during the PlayStation Showcase, the internet won’t stop talking about Thor. No, not Chris Hemsworth — the deity from Norse mythology. Mainly because, well, he’s a heavy-set dude, and some mean-spirited fans claim it’s an unrealistic depiction of a warrior. However, three-time powerlifting champion Darren McCormac strongly disagrees.

“Like it or not, God of War’s Thor is the peak of male performance,” McCormac said via TheSixthAxis. “Why do I say that? As a strength athlete, there is a correlation between bulk and strength. In powerlifting, the most competitive classes are the under 100kg and under 110kg – guys who are lifting multiple times their own bodyweight. These are big men. 100kg is 16 stone, 110kg is nearly 18 stone. They won’t be tall, they’ll be bulky.”

McCormac continued: “The guys lifting the biggest weights will often be in the under 125kg class, but not all these guys will have abs, far from it. They’ll have a layer of lard over it, a power belly. Any old fool can get abs – yes I am looking at you, Mr Hemsworth – but a power belly and big traps (the muscles either side of your neck) are the sign of a bloody strong man.”

Setting aside how silly it is to argue about realism in God of War: Ragnarok  cause, well, half the cast are literal gods, it’s pretty cool to see someone like McCormac set the record straight. Thor will be a big boy in this game, and that’s awesome.

The 10 most hype trailers and reveals from Sony’s PlayStation Showcase

Would you rather thwip across New York or clash swords with Norse gods?

Excitement going into Sony’s PlayStation Showcase was damn near palpable, and somehow, the show managed to meet expectations. For the most part, anyway.

Sure, it would have been nice to catch a teaser for Final Fantasy XVI, but it’s hard to complain when the likes of God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had magnificent showings. There were plenty of great surprises too. Like, who could have predicted a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was going to debut at this show? Or better yet, Kid A Mnesia Exhibition, which is being co-developed by Epic Games and fricking Radiohead!? Yes, as in the band!

Considering the embarrassment of riches that was this show, FTW’s Mary Clarke and GLHF’s Kyle Campbell decided to list the wildest and straight-up best trailers from the PlayStation Showcase.

Developers and the gaming world mourn a ‘God of War’ gameplay engineer

George Mawle is best known for his work on the game’s Leviathan Axe.

God of War wouldn’t be considered a modern-day classic without the contributions of George Mawle, a gameplay engineer who sadly passed away on Thursday.

Working at Sony Santa Monica during God of War’s development as a programmer, Mawle was responsible for everything from enemy combat behaviors to making weapons feel satisfying. Particularly the universally adored Leviathan Axe, which many of Mawle’s co-workers claimed wouldn’t be the same without his efforts.

“If you’ve ever enjoyed throwing and recalling the Leviathan Axe or twirling the chains of the Blades of Chaos in God of War,” Mihir Sheth, combat design lead at Sony Santa Monica, said via Twitter. “Please take a moment to recognize that it was possible in large part to the engineering and energy of George Mawle, who sadly passed away on September 2nd, 2021.”

Sheth continued: “There’s much more I can say, as I’m sure is the case with many other people he’s worked with. I’d welcome others to share in the comments. Games are made by people, and we all lost a great one on Thursday. We’ll miss you big guy.”

A number of Sony Santa Monica developers left some moving words in Mawle’s memory.

It’s quite touching to see Mawle’s co-workers take the time to honor their late friend. Rest in peace, king.

Sony will offer free PS4 to PS5 upgrades for ‘Horizon Forbidden West’ after all

If you buy the game on PS4, there will be no extra cost to update to the PS5 version!

Sony has decided to walk back its decision on Horizon Forbidden West’s paid PS4 to PS5 upgrade options, as now the entire process is free for everyone. This change came about after the company received some criticism due to a prior statement claiming there would be no extra cost in upgrading from the game’s PS4 version to PS5.

On Saturday, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan updated the initial PlayStation Blog post about Horizon Forbidden West preorders with a statement.

“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West,” Ryan said on the PlayStation Blog. “While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

Check out Ryan’s complete statement for yourself below.

However, later in the same post, Ryan confirms that other first-party cross-generation exclusives like God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 will not be free. Instead, there will be a $10 fee to upgrade from PS4 to PS5.

‘Horizon Forbidden West’ will not be upgradeable from PS4 to PS5

If you want both versions, you’ll have to pay a lot more.

Horizon Forbidden West will not have a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade option. There are purchase options that will give you both versions of the game, but things get expensive and confusing fast.

“For players looking to have access to both the PS4 & PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West, please purchase the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions,” Sony said on the PlayStation Blog. “Dual entitlement does not apply to the standard and Special Editions.”

So to even get access to both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West, fans need to spend at least $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. While this may not sound like a big deal, Sony made some statements in the past about PS4 to PS5 upgrade options for the game that only further add to the confusion.

“No one should be disappointed,” Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President, said via The Washington Post over a year ago when asked about first-party exclusives. “The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It’s about people having choice. I’m really quite pleased about the situation.”

A lot of fans aren’t happy about the situation either.

Considering how difficult it is to get a PS5 right now, it’s a shame that Sony isn’t offering free upgrades for fans.

SPECIAL DELIVERY: These brand new Nike shoes really look like a PlayStation 5

This is the PlayStation 5 in sneaker form.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxjnPPyOLD8

Nike and Sony seem like an odd couple, but they actually have a pretty long history of working together.

It all starts with the PlayStation Air Force 1 that dropped in 2006. And through those 15 years, they’ve dropped a number of collaborations together on a few different silhouettes.

The latest one is the PlayStation PG5 of Paul George’s signature shoe line and the details on this thing are incredible.

It truly looks like a PlayStation 5 in sneaker form with colors and details matching a few exactly off of the system and its Dualsense controller. There’s a reason for that, though.

Sony actually gave Nike a sneak peek on what the PS5 looked like before anyone else saw it so they could build this shoe. The story is absolutely incredible.

Sykes and the crew dig into it as they unbox this masterpiece on the latest episode of Special Delivery. Tap in.

Here’s when Sony will likely reveal the PS5 price, release date

PlayStation fans shouldn’t have to wait too much longer for PS5 details.

Microsoft revealed its Xbox Series S and announced the price points ($299/$499) for its two next-generation consoles earlier this week, and PlayStation fans are starting to run out of patience with the expected release window only a couple of months away.

Fortunately, Sony has announced a PlayStation 5 showcase event set for Wednesday, September 16th. In its announcement, Sony did not confirm that the PS5 release date and price will be revealed during the event, expected to be 40 minutes long – but it seems exceedingly likely that all will be revealed, particularly after the Xbox announcements put pressure on Sony.

The PS5 digital showcase will air at 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 16th on Twitch and YouTube.

Via PlayStation.com:

“Before PlayStation 5 launches this holiday, we wanted to give you one more look at some of the great games coming to PS5 at launch (and beyond!).

Our next digital showcase will weigh in at around 40 minutes, and feature updates on the latest titles from Worldwide Studios and our world-class development partners.”

Everyone wants details on the PlayStation 5 after Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S reveal

Sony WYD?

Details on the Xbox Series X and S have finally arrived and they both look like absolutely incredible next gen gaming systems.

Microsoft is calling the Series X as the most powerful gaming system ever and, when you take a look at the specs, it just might be. The Series S is the smaller, cheaper console that plays all of the same games. The console’s performance lags a bit next to its bigger counterpart, but it works all the same.

On Wednesday, Microsoft dropped details on both systems. They finally revealed the price for both, the pre-order date and their actual release dates. That price for the Series X is solid. But, honestly? That Series S for $299 might be a steal.

Those are two really good prices for these systems — especially after most people thought they were going to end up paying an arm and a leg for the Series X. This is a good mark.

So, now, all eyes on the internet have turned to Sony. There’s been little to no information released about the PS5’s pre-order date, how much it’s going to cost or how accessible it will be.

Microsoft gave people a bargain — on the 25th anniversary of the PlayStation’s first release date, no less! Sony can’t let that slide, right?

The people want to know.

Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too much longer. Sony may or may not have responded to the speculation on Twitter with this Ghost of Tsushima GIF.

Twitter rightfully roasted NBA 2k21 for its insanely sweaty graphics

Zion Williamson is the sweatiest dude ever, apparently.

Video game graphics have looked better and better as the years have gone by and naturally so.

Everything can’t still look like Super Mario on the original Nintendo, right? Right. That would be terrible. With that being said, however, a video game should never look this real.

Or, for that matter, this sweaty.

2k sports gave us the first look at NBA 2k21 during Sony’s Future of Gaming event and it was, uh, interesting.

Zion Williamson introduced the game and was the athlete they used in their gameplay video. The first thing you see is the Pelicans’ forward absolutely drenched in sweat.

Like, bruh. THAT LOOKS REAL. It’s almost like a photo of Zion on the court. Fam. Unreal. Well, not unreal. It’s actually too real.

Even the video when he’s in action looks ridiculously real.

SO. MUCH. SWEAT.

He was so sweaty that Twitter had no choice but to roast NBA 2k itself.

Honestly? They aren’t wrong. NBA 2k looks better each and every year…but the game typically comes with similar flaws that are just never corrected.

So, yeah, 2k. The sweat is cool. Zion is cool. All of that is good. But fix the game, fam.
