Sonic Frontiers has sold more than 2.5 million copies

The blue blur’s latest adventure is quite popular, it seems.

Much to the surprise of pre-release naysayers, Sonic Frontiers has been selling like hotcakes.

On Monday, Sega announced that Sonic Frontiers has sold more than 2.5 million copies since its launch on Nov. 6, 2022. That figure includes unit sales across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC – making it one of last month’s bestselling releases. Quite an accomplishment when stuff like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and God of War Ragnarok is nipping at its heels.

Sonic Frontiers also came close to taking home the 2022 Game Awards category for Player’s Voice but ultimately lost to Genshin Impact.

Sega has lots of post-launch support in store for Sonic Frontiers, already releasing an in-depth DLC roadmap for 2023. Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka also claims that this game represents the franchise’s future. Mostly in terms of direction for the mainline console entries and not so much the smaller side-scrolling titles like Sonic Origins.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s theatrical success earlier this year undoubtedly boosted overall interest in the franchise, too. Earning $71 million during its opening weekend at the box office. A third movie and Knuckles the Echidna spinoff series are also in the works.

Sega unveils Sonic Frontiers DLC roadmap for 2023

Team Sonic has a lot in store for Sonic Frontiers DLC in the coming year, including new modes and more

Sega announced a Sonic Frontiers DLC roadmap stretching through 2023 with promises to keep the open-world game fresh and active for at least the next 12 months. The development team made the announcement on Twitter and shared a graphic showcasing what to expect in each wave of updates, though none of the planned updates has a release date or time frame yet.

On Dec. 21, 2022, Sega will also add a Holiday Cheer suit – a red with white fur trim affair – for Sonic as a free update.

The first wave will introduce Juke Box and Photo modes, handy if you fancy taking a few snapshots of Sonic in his brave new world. Also included is a new challenge mode. Sega didn’t elaborate on what to expect from that, but presumably, it’ll include a set of more difficult challenges suitable for those who have reached the end of the game.

Wave two adds an Open Zone challenge and more Kocos, and it celebrates Sonic’s birthday in some as-yet-unspecified fashion. Wave three seems to promise the most significant updates, promising new playable characters and a new story in that round of updates.

Sega imposed that part of the roadmap on an image of Knuckles, Tails, and Amy – Sonic’s formerly missing friends, so it seems safe to assume you can look forward to using their unique talents in Frontiers toward the end of 2023, something to tide you over until Sonic the Hedgehog 3 lands in theaters the following year.

Sega will release all the roadmap content for free on consoles and PC.

Sonic Frontiers is the future of new Sonic games, Sega says

New Sonic games will follow Sonic Frontiers’ open zone format, as the hedgehog goes fast into a new generation of style

Sonic Frontiers is the blueprint Sega will build new Sonic games on moving forward, Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka told Sector (first spotted by TheGamer). The blue blur has entered a new phase of existence, with the Open Zone format as its “cornerstone,” Iizuka said.

“Just like Sonic Adventure, our goal for Sonic Frontiers was to create a game that would be the cornerstone of future Sonic games,” Iizuka said. “It is a brand-new approach for the franchise, but we have been conscious to honor Sonic‘s roots as well – the game still needs to feel like a Sonic game.”

“We know many players love exploring expansive worlds with no predetermined path and that’s what we set out to achieve with our new open-zone platforming concept. I am very excited for Sonic to join this revolutionary step in immersive gaming worlds.”

Iizuka also commented on how much the team appreciated writer Ian Flynn’s work on Frontiers’ narrative and its prequel comics.

While Frontiers might be the inspiration for new Sonic games, the future likely still holds plenty of innovation and experimentation. Sonic Adventure prompted a direct sequel, but after that, Sega tried an on-rails experience with The Secret Rings, a rather bizarre narrative experiment in Sonic 06, dubbed the “woman kissing simulator” by fans, since it sees Sonic fall in love with a human princess because of course it does.

Then it was back to basics with Generations and the officially approved Sonic Mania as well, so if there’s one thing you can expect from Team Sonic, it’s that they typically won’t do what you expect.

Sega is releasing a Sonic Frontiers’ digital comic to tell the first part of the hedgehog’s upcoming adventure before the game itself releases on Nov. 8, 2022. The comic is officially called Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Convergence and will debut on Sega’s Twitter page on Oct. 18, 2022, and the publisher said in a follow-up tweet that a Convergence animated special is also in the works.

Convergence is the first of a two-part prologue, though Sega didn’t mention when it will make the second half available.

Writer Ian Flynn crafted the prologue’s narrative, which seemingly tells what happens to Sonic’s friends Amy, Knuckles, and Tails, before Sonic himself winds up stranded alone in a dangerous land. Flynn’s previous credits include Sonic Origins and Sonic Forces, which also had its own comic prequel, and Flynn has worked on Archie Comics and some DC properties as well.

Evan Stanley is the artist behind Convergence’s line art. Stanley also worked on Archie Comics previously and has a portfolio of Sega-related work on Deviantart.

Whether Super Sonic makes an appearance in Convergence is up in the air, but the golden ‘hog will play a much bigger role in Frontiers proper than he usually does in Sonic games, Sega said previously.

Super Sonic plays a key role in Sonic Frontiers

Sonic’s ultimate form is essential for tackling some of the open-world’s biggest challenges.

It looks like Super Sonic in Sonic Frontiers will play a more significant role than we first thought.

Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto told IGN that only Super Sonic will be able to defeat some bosses in the open-world platformer. The golden super hog also boasts a new set of abilities different from regular Sonic, which is in keeping with his appearances in earlier Sonic games – which Sega highlighted in a clip during the 2022 Tokyo Game Show.

The blue blur’s iconic superpowered form first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 way back in 1992 and has shown up in nearly every Sonic game since — even making an appearance in the movie. However, you could only play as Super Sonic in a final battle or after completing secret challenges to unlock him at the end of the game.

Sega making this ultimate form a vital part of clearing open-world challenges is yet another new step forward for the series and seemingly points to some significant changes in its usual structure.

“Up until now, in Sonic games, Super Sonic would only appear against the last boss,” Kishimoto told IGN. “Imagine if the first boss in Sonic Frontiers is as strong as those bosses.”

Sonic can only transform after acquiring seven Chaos Emeralds, items traditionally collected throughout each game. Making them, and Sonic’s ultimate form, available as early as the game’s beginning looks promising for how much freedom in exploration Sega will give players once Sonic Frontiers launches on Nov. 7, 2022.

Sonic remasters might include leaks for Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Origins released today and already people have found what they think is new information about the upcoming Sonic Frontiers game.

Sonic Origins released today and already people have found what they think is new information about the upcoming Sonic Frontiers hidden within the game’s files.

Freshly released Sonic Origins is a collection of some of the most beloved 2D Sonic games including Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. Fans of classic Sonic games have been highly anticipating the game. Despite several re-releases of the first two Sonic games for the Sega Genesis, the third game hasn’t been distributed since 2009.

Licensing issues have allegedly prevented Sega from creating new versions of its beloved Sonic title. The common rumor is that Michael Jackson had a hand in creating the tracks for Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, and the Ending Credits theme, though he has never been officially credited. In Sonic Origins these licensed songs have been replaced with newly written music.

However, this is not the only change in the collection. There is a 3D menu island to explore, made from scratch for the collections. New missions and TV style animations are also included. The new release allows you to play in the original style with a set number of lives and continues, or in ‘anniversary mode’, which enables you to play without fear of a game over.

Since its release modders have been looking into the code of the game and discovered more than they anticipated. It appears that the 3D menu island is created using code for the as yet unreleased 3D Sonic game Sonic Frontiers. This was previously theorized by the community after it discovered both were being created by Sonic Team using Criware tools.

While it is normal for a company to reuse assets and shaders for multiple projects, the amount of information found seemingly related to Sonic Frontiers is surprising. A pastebin of the code, which has been published by Twitter user ahremic, shows a number of details that have not yet been officially released.

The code includes the names of classic characters such as Amy Rose, Knuckles and Big the Cat, of which only Amy has been officially revealed. Big is also connected to the word “fishing” making people suspect there will be a Big the Cat related fishing game in the upcoming open-world project.

Sonic Frontiers is scheduled for release this year with no confirmed date set. Sega has yet to comment on the leaks.

Sonic Frontiers combat looks rough in new footage

Brawling may not be the blue blur’s forte.

More footage of Sonic Frontiers came out on Friday, highlighting some less-than-stellar combat scenarios.

IGN got to show off how the blue blur will deal with bad guys in Sonic Frontiers, and it’s looking pretty rough. In the footage, Sonic saunters up to lifeless robots before slowly throwing kicks and punches. Riveting stuff. Then, he starts zipping around doing some sort of super moves as the camera barely keeps off. Perspectives shift around at an uncomfortable pace, and there’s not much cohesion. I can only speak for myself, but it’s not great.

Watch the combat demo from Sonic Frontiers for yourself below. Maybe I’m being overly pessimistic, but most fans aren’t loving what’s on display either.

It’s too bad because the initial teaser clip from Sonic Frontiers had so much promise. The overworld demonstration was solid, at least from a technical perspective, even if interaction and traversal appear somewhat flavorless. Hopefully, it’ll improve with more development time.

Sonic Frontiers is due out later this year for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. No firm release date as of yet, though. Might be worth delaying this one given the current reception.
