Stamann (18-2-1 MMA, 4-1-1 UFC) and Yadong (15-4-1 MMA, 4-0-1 UFC) settled for a majority draw in their bantamweight fight at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., in a fight broadcast on ESPN.

The broadcast crew of Jon Anik, Daniel Cormier and Paul Felder sure seemed to think Stamann had done enough to win the fight – especially considering Yadong had a point taken away in the first round due to an illegal knee. And the fans in Capital One Arena seemed to respond with a bit of surprise when Bruce Buffer read the scores, as well.

UFC on ESPN 7 results: Cody Stamann vs. Song Yadong ends in majority draw

A point deduction spelled the difference on the scorecards in the fight between Cody Stamann and Song Yadong.

[autotag]Cody Stamann[/autotag] and [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] fought for 15 minutes on Saturday night, but neither walked away the victor.

At UFC DC, Stamann (18-2-1 MMA, 4-1-1 UFC) and Yadong (15-4 MMA, 4-0 UFC), a point deduction against Yadong made the difference as the duo fought to a majority draw (29-28, 28-28, 28-28).

The bantamweight fight was part of the UFC on ESPN 7 main card at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. It aired on ESPN following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

Controversy struck in the first round in the form of an illegal knee by Yadong. When trying to lock in a standing front choke, Yadong kneed Stamann, who was grounded, in the head. Stamann wasn’t fazed by the knee, but it’s blatancy resulted in a point deduction from referee Kevin Mulhall.

For the remainder of the fight, Stamann utilized his wrestling and strength to control Yadong. During the bout’s progression, the gap in those two departments became more and more evident. Stamann’s most dominant work during the fight came in the third round, when he was able to land hard shots from the top.

When the scores were tallied, Stamann seemed confident he had done enough. But the judges thought otherwise. The bout was ruled a majority draw — with the 29-28 score going Stamann’s way — leaving both men without a win bonus.

Prior the fight, Stamann had split his previous two UFC appearances. Outside of a 2018 defeat to Aljamain Sterling, Stamann hasn’t suffered a loss since April 2014.

With the draw, Yadong’s unbeaten streak stays alive. Entering UFC on ESPN 7, Yadong had defeated Felipe Arantes, Vince Morales, and Alejandro Perez in his promotional tenure.

The UFC is back in the nation’s capital city this week for the first time since 2011, and heavyweights top the bill.

In the main event, [autotag]Alistair Overeem[/autotag] (45-17 MMA, 10-6 UFC) takes on the unbeaten [autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at heavyweight. The fight is a virtual pick’em with the oddsmakers, and it’s close with our 13 MMA Junkie editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers, as well. Overeem has the slightest possible edge at 7-6 in our picks.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Cynthia Calvillo[/autotag] (8-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) badly missed weight for her women’s strawweight bout against [autotag]Marina Rodriguez[/autotag] (12-0-1 MMA, 2-0-1 UFC), but the fight will go on. Rodriguez is a slight favorite at the sports books, and she has a slight edge at 7-6 in our picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] (36-12 MMA, 6-6 UFC) meets [autotag]Stefan Struve[/autotag] (29-11 MMA, 13-9 UFC) in a battle of heavyweight veterans. Rothwell has a slight betting edge around -150, but he has a massive 12-1 lead in the picks with only one of our staff members taking the 7-foot Struve.

Another picks blowout belongs to [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] (8-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in her women’s bantamweight fight against [autotag]Yana Kunitskaya[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC). Ladd is a -160 favorite, but has an 11-2 lead in the picks.

6 burning questions heading into UFC on ESPN 7

The UFC hits our nation’s capital Saturday with a card that features several fights worth your time.

After a two-week break, the UFC is back in business. And the company returns to action with a slate of fights worth checking out.

A heavyweight matchup between the ageless [autotag]Alistair Overeem[/autotag] and undefeated [autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] headlines the final UFC on ESPN card of 2019. The main event is just one of a string of fights that might not have the star power of the month’s biggest event, UFC 245 with it’s three title fights Dec. 14, but nonetheless have meaningful consequences for the career trajectories of the participants and rankings implications for their respective weight classes.

Without further ado, then, here are six burning questions as the road winds toward Saturday night in our nation’s capital.

Can Jairzinho Rozenstruik make the most of his big opportunity?

We suspect this isn’t the way the undefeated Surinamese kickboxer wanted to get his first UFC main-event opportunity. Rozenstruik (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC)
stepped up and accepted the bout with Overeem after Walt Harris had to drop out due to the disappearance of his stepdaughter, who was unfortunately found dead last week.

While everyone’s thoughts remain with the Harris family in its time of sorrow, the sport continues on, and Rozenstruik steps into his chance to make a statement that he’s truly arrived.

Rozenstruik has already demonstrated his veteran kickboxing skills have transferred over nicely from the ring to the cage, a point he’s hammered home each time out so far in the UFC octagon. Rozenstruik has won all three of his UFC fights via KO/TKO, with none of his fights lasting six minutes and his most recent triumph being a 29-second knockout of former UFC heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski in the intense spotlight of UFC 244.

That’s all well and good, but what happens if he fights someone with the ability to wait him out and drag him into deeper waters? Overeem (45-17 MMA, 10-6 UFC) has gotten clipped a few times, too, but he’s one of the game’s craftiest and adaptable fighters, a cerebral competitor who is not likely to be goaded into many mistakes. A victory over Arlovski is nice on a resume, but he’s a clearly diminished fighter. A win over Overeem, however, would be a statement Rozenstruik is ready for this, and ready to join the elite mix.

China’s Song Yadong sees UFC champ Zhang Weili beating Joanna Jedrzejczyk: ‘She has better striking technique’

UFC on ESPN 7’s Song Yadong sees women’s strawweight champion Zhang Weili beating former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248.

WASHINGTON – [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] doesn’t think the UFC’s strawweight champion will lose her belt in her next title defense.

The Team Alpha Male fighter, who’s set to compete at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 7 in Washington, D.C., against Cody Stamann, thinks Zhang Weili will defeat Joanna Jedrzejczyk in her first title defense, scheduled for UFC 248 in March.

It’s hard to deny that Weili is a threat to anyone competing at 115 pounds, but Yadong (14-3 MMA, 4-0 UFC) sees Weili being better on the feet than Jedrzejczyk, who’s known to be one of the best strikers in women’s MMA.

“I believe she’s going to win her next fight,” Yadong said at Thursday’s media day for UFC DC. “She is faster, stronger, and she has better striking technique compared to her opponent.”

Yadong, who like Weili is also from China, says things have changed back home ever since Zhang was able to dethrone then-champion Jessica Andrade in August.

“After Weili got her UFC title, there is more interest in getting to know UFC and MMA,” Yadong said. “More people now know China has its own champion, so it was a big improvement for MMA in China after she won.”

Off Guard: Cody Stamann looks to make statement against Song Yadong

Cody Stamann admits that Song Yadong is nasty, but is looking to beat the (expletive) out of him at UFC DC.

[autotag]Cody Stamann[/autotag] could break into the top tier of bantamweight contenders as he looks to make a statement on Dec. 7.

Stamann (18-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 7, and while he admits that he’s in for a tough challenge, he’s confident that he has the game plan to beat him.

“I don’t know about excited, that kid is nasty,” Stamann told MMA Junkie. “He’s a nasty little (expletive) for sure but same thing, I got to beat his (expletive) and cut the paycheck. I don’t really see it any different than anything else. I just got to stylistically prepare for what he does well, and I do that really well. I’m good at game planning and scheming and figuring out ways to beat people and things are starting to come together.”

Stamann recently suffered his first setback in almost four years, in a submission loss to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 228, but was able to rebound with a unanimous decision over Alejandro Perez in his last outing in March.

Yadong (15-4 MMA, 4-0 UFC) on the other hand, is off to a 4-0 start in the UFC, notching three performance bonuses in the process. In his last outing, he scored a first round knockout over Perez at UFC 239, the same opponent Stamann last fought.

“I see a lot of guys that rise and fizzle out,” Stamann said. “I’m not saying that he’s that guy, he’s got a lot of really great people around him, he’s a really good athlete but it doesn’t make a difference. Dec. 7, I’m going to beat the (expletive) out of him. That’s all there is to it.”

And with the recent additions of former champions and future hall of famers Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo to the division, Stamann is excited for the possibility to one day throw down with these legends.

“You got Aldo and Edgar coming down to (1)35 and those are two more legends to add to the already stacked division so it’s insane, and those are fights that I want,” Stamann said. “I’m excited about it, I think a lot of guys are probably shitting their pants because oh no all these really good guys are moving into bantamweight. I’m pumped about it because I do think I can beat those guys, and I think I’m going to peak at just the right time as an athlete to kind of get those legends like Edgar and Jose Aldo, right at the ends of their careers.”
