Somto Cyril withdraws name from NBA draft, will play for Georgia in 2024

Georgia center Somto Cyril withdraws from the NBA draft

After landing their third commitment of this cycle from three-star guard Jordyn Kee on Wednesday, the Georgia Bulldogs basketball team got more good news early Thursday morning. Somto Cyril, a four-star signee at the center position for the Bulldogs, officially withdrew his name from the 2024 NBA draft, affirming his commitment to play for Georgia later this year, per CBS’ Jon Rothstein.

Cyril is listed at 6-foot-10, 240 pounds, and is considered by numerous recruiting outlets to be a top 10 center in the class of 2024. He played last season in the Overtime Elite League, which allowed him to test the NBA draft waters while also signing with the Bulldogs.

Cyril is originally from Nigeria, arriving in the United States in 2021. He played a year of high school basketball at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee before joining Overtime Elite. He had previously signed with Kentucky before flipping to Georgia in April  following John Calipari’s departure to Arkansas.

Cyril joins the aforementioned Kee and five-star forward Asa Newell in a very talented Georgia recruiting class set to join the team this year, in addition to the five transfer players the Bulldogs have brought in this offseason. Cyril’s rim protection, dunking ability, and overall size and frame will be a major help for Mike White’s team as they look to take a major step forward in the SEC following a 20-17 record a year ago.

Center Somto Cyril has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs after decommitting from Kentucky basketball.

Somto Cyril a  6-foot-10, 245-pound big man out of Atlanta (GA) Overtime Elite has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. He previously decommitted from the Kentucky basketball program.

Cyril, a former Kentucky signee under John Calipari, is ranked as the nation’s No. 44 overall prospect by the 247Sports Composite and the No. 9 center. He is rated four stars.

Cyril had this to say about his decision:

On my visit to Athens, Coach White and his staff were very detailed in their approach and it was a great feeling being in a place that had such a family environment.

He also declared for the NBA Draft. His reason was simple:

I want to take this time to get some much-needed feedback from NBA teams during the month of May. This will allow not only myself and my family to have the information, but it will also provide my coaching staff with information about me as well going into the 2023-2024 season.

Four-star center recruit Somto Cyril has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs basketball program. Cyril, who previously signed for the Kentucky Wildcats, did not want to follow head coach John Calipari to Arkansas. Calipari’s departure allowed Cyril to be released from his national letter of intent.

The 6-foot-10, 240-pound center plays basketball for Overtime Elite in Atlanta, Georgia. The four-star is ranked as the nation’s No. 44 recruit, No. 9 center and No. 4 player in Georgia.

Somto Cyril’s commitment to Georgia gives the Bulldogs five newcomers (and counting) for the 2024-2025 college basketball season. Cyril joins five-star forward Asa Newell as incoming true freshman for the Bulldogs. Georgia has the No. 17 recruiting class in the country, per 247Sports.

Cyril has a well-developed frame for a true freshman. The Overtime Elite center is a good rim protector and a powerful dunker.

Cyril is putting his name into the 2024 NBA draft in addition to committing to Georgia. The lengthy center is looking to get feedback from NBA teams while maintaining his college eligibility.
