191 student-athletes earn 2024 NFCA High School Spring All-Region honors

All winners move forward to be considered for selection with the previously-selected 2023 Summer/Fall All-Region honorees.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Friday afternoon that 191 student-athletes from 108 programs have received 2024 NFCA High School Spring All-Region accolades.

The awards honor softball student-athletes from eight (Regions III through X) of the Association’s 10 regions with first- and second-team selections.

2024 Spring All-Region Teams

Three schools topped the charts with five All-Region selections apiece. Maryland’s Mardela High (Region X) placed four of its five on the first team, while Alaska’s Delta (Region III) and New York Catholic High School Athletic Association champion St. Anthony’s (Region IX) each had two first-team honorees among their quintets.

Four programs — Idaho’s Eagle (Region III), Arizona’s Tempe Corona del Sol (Region IV), Allen Park (Region V) and Calallen (Region VI) — had four players selected. Seventeen schools had three selections, while 25 more had two honorees and 59 had one representative.

NFCA High School All-Region and All-America student-athletes must be nominated by their NFCA-member head coach. All-Region is voted on by their respective region’s member head coaches, and All-Americans are voted on by the full high school membership. In some instances, limited regional nominations prevented a position from being filled.

All winners move forward to be considered for selection with the previously-selected 2023 Summer/Fall All-Region honorees for the three NFCA High School All-America teams, which will be announced July 19.

In three seasons at Washington, she appeared in 150 games, including 143 starts. Fielder helped the Huskies advance to the 2023 Women’s College World Series. It was Washington’s first trip to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma since 2019.

In 2024, Fiedler, a native of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, recorded a .365 batting average, seven home runs, 27 RBIs and 30 runs.

Florida softball adds two veteran infielders via NCAA transfer portal

Fresh off a deep run in the Women’s College World Series the softball team is already restocking its roster with high-quality talent.

The Florida softball program added a pair of veteran players this week through the NCAA transfer portal. The Gators are coming off a deep run in the Women’s College World Series at the beginning of the month and are already restocking their roster.

On Monday, [autotag]Tim Walton[/autotag]’s team brought former Washinton Huskies infielder Rylee Holtorf, who was a 2024 All-PAC-12 First Team shortstop for the Huskies. She holds a career batting average of .290 with 21 doubles, four triples, 17 home runs, 78 runs scored and 56 RBI.

“We are extremely excited to add experience and depth to the youngest team at the Women’s College World Series last year.” Walton said. “Rylee Holtorf brings a wealth of experience and the desire to continue to get better. We are looking forward to getting back on the dirt this fall.”

On Tuesday, the Orange and Blue added former Alabama Crimson Tide infielder Kenleigh Cahalan to the family with two years of eligibility remaining starting in 2025. She was a 2024 All-SEC Second Team selection, and has a career .290 batting average with 65 runs scored, 24 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 50 walks and 61 total RBI over 126 games played.

“We are extremely excited to add Kenleigh Cahalan to our program.” Walton said. “Kenleigh is a hard worker and an ultra-competitor. We were very fortunate to recruit her a second time through the recruiting process as we followed her throughout her entire high school career and recruited her to be a Gator the first time around. We are looking forward to getting to work!”

Final 2024 USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings

Northwest Rankin finishes spring No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Back-to-back Mississippi state champion Northwest Rankin finishes the spring season as the No. 1 team in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

The (34-0) Cougars completed their undefeated season on May 16 with a second-straight victory over Hernando in the Class 7A championship series. The final game was called due to weather after a delay with the Cougars leading 12-3 in the bottom of the sixth, and the trophy presentation was made on the team’s bus. Northwest Rankin allowed just 41 runs all season while scoring 324. The Cougars won the 6A title in 2023.

Northwest Rankin overcame Texas’ Katy (39-3-1) for the top spot on May 30 and held that distinction for the final five weeks. Katy spent eight weeks at No. 1 after California’s Pacifica (27-2) ceded that spot to the Tigers in week five.

More than half of the teams in the final ranking won state championships this season. Eight of the first 10 teams, including the first six are state titlists.

Four others finished second in their respective state tournaments.

State rankings submitted by the 2024 NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule.

The final ranking for the spring season is next Thursday. The NFCA Summer/Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll will start in late August.

Oklahoma finishes in the Top 25 in 2023-2024 Director’s Cup standings

Oklahoma Athletics had another strong year, finishing 24th in the Director’s Cup Top 25.

The Oklahoma Sooners had another very strong year, as OU has finished in the Top 25 of the Division 1 LEARFIELD Director’s Cup standings  once again.

The Sooners finished ranked 24th, marking the 21st time in the last 24 years that Oklahoma has made an appearance in the final rankings.

Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in the NCAA Championships. For Division I, 19 sports are counted, four of which must be baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball. The next highest 15 (maximum) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.

The football team led by [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] participated in the [autotag]Valero Alamo Bowl[/autotag] following a bounce-back season in 2023. The Sooners posted 10 wins for the 42nd time in program history, including the signature win of the Venables era to this point. Oklahoma beat Texas 34-30 on October 7.

Obviously, the Sooners got a big jump from [autotag]Patty Gasso[/autotag]’s softball team winning their fourth national championship in a row an eighth overall.

But while football is always the headliner at Oklahoma and softball has become a force with their dynastic run under Gasso, plenty of other sports had remarkable seasons as well.

After winning its first-ever [autotag]Big 12[/autotag] regular season title, OU baseball hosted an NCAA regional for the first time since 2010. [autotag]Skip Johnson[/autotag] was named Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Women’s basketball won its second straight Big 12 championship under the direction of head coach [autotag]Jennie Baranczyk[/autotag], and first outright since 2009, en route to a third consecutive NCAA Tournament. The Sooners advanced to the second round of the tournament.

K.J. Kindler and the Women’s Gymnastics team made the NCAA tournament championship finals. Mark Williams and the Men’s team finished third in the NCAA finals.

Men’s and women’s tennis saw both squads advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Men’s golf placed ninth at the national championship, earning the program’s seventh top-10 finish in eight years. The squad won the NCAA Rancho Sante Fe Regional to qualify for the program’s 13th straight NCAA Championships – the second longest streak in the country. Women’s golf, returned to the postseason by earning a spot in regional action.

Joe Castiglione continues to be one of the best athletics directors in the business. The Sooners are in good hands as long as Joe C wants to keep doing it.

2024 USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings: Week 15

State champions break into USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three state champions jumped into the mix this week, with minimal movement elsewhere, as the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 continues to wind down.

Illinois 2A titlist Carterville took over the ninth spot this week on the strength of the (38-1) Lions’ pair of 1-0 victories in the state final four. Carterville defeated Rockridge in 10 innings in the semis and North Boone in the championship. The Lions’ only loss came in their season opener, 1-0 to Kentucky powerhouse McCracken County, on March 15.

Meanwhile, new No. 16 St. John Vianney defeated two Super 25 squads in succession en route to their second straight New Jersey Non-Public A crown. The (26-1) Lancers eliminated then-No. 16 Notre Dame with a 3-0 triumph ahead of last week’s poll, then edged No. 15 Mount St. Dominic, 4-1, last Thursday in the championship game. St. John Vianney’s lone loss was 2-0 to Immaculate Heart Academy in the Blue Eagles’ Anthony LaRezza Invitational on April 13.

No. 23 Riverside (24-3) defeated Hickory and Kellam last week to claim its first Virginia Class 5 state championship, in just the program’s ninth year of existence.

Addisen Fisher named 2023-24 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year

A grand high school finale for the UCLA commit and nation’s top-ranked recruit.

UCLA commit Addisen Fisher added an impressive piece of hardware to the mantle this week, with the Bend High School (Ore.) standout being named the 2023-24 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year.

The announcement culminated a selection process that included half a million student-athletes who play high school softball across the U.S. It concluded with a surprise presentation of the trophy at the Bend softball field, with Fisher surrounded by her family, coaches, and teammates.

Capping off the special moment, the 2014-15 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year—and UCLA alumna—Rachel Garcia congratulated Fisher during a video call.

(Photo: Joe Greer, Courtesy of Gatorade)

Fisher, who was an incredible three-time Gatorade Oregon Softball Player of the Year, now joins an impressive group of former National winners who have combined for more than 17 gold medals and five National Championships.

For the Lava Bears right-handed ace, it’s a national spotlight on an extraordinary career, one that included a Class 5A state title this past season in which Fisher dominated from the circle and at the plate.

Her stats are fitting of the nation’s top-ranked recruit in the Class of 2024:

  • 0.36 ERA, 10 shutouts, five no-hitters and four perfect games
  • 261 strikeouts in 134.2 innings, averaging 1.9 Ks per inning
  • Opposing hitters batted .092 against her; FIP was .198
  • .667 batting avg. with 17 home runs, 40 RBI, 54 runs and 18 steals

“Addisen Fisher is not only a dominating force on the mound, but one of the best hitters we’ve faced this season,” began Stacy Cox, head coach at Summit High School, in a statement release about Fisher’s dual-threat prowess on the field.

“If you choose to pitch to the talented senior, you risk watching the softball leave the park within seconds, and any pitch (location) is fair game. On the mound, she is near perfection with speeds reaching 70 and a changeup that will stop you in your tracks. Such a talented player with a very bright future.”

Outside the lines, Fisher’s resume is equally impressive.

While maintaining a 4.13 GPA, she donated her time to the Red Cross and mentored intellectually and physically challenged students in life skills. As a WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) member, she served as an instructor and coach with Bend North Little League. And during her time with the National Honor Society, she organized food and blood donation drives at her school.

When all of it is combined, it’s easy to see why Fisher was so deserving of this year’s Player of the Year recognition, which Gatorade president and general manager Michael Del Pozzo noted of the future Bruin.

“With such a talented pool of competition, being selected as the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year is a testament to Addisen’s hard work and achievements on and off the field,” said Del Pozzo in a statement.

“Addisen’s commitment to excellence in all facets of life is inspiring, and we’re excited to see what’s next for her.”

Same here, Michael. Same here.

Congrats, Addisen, on the remarkable high school chapter of your career and winning the 2023-24 Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year.

Texas Tech head coach to serve as Lady Vols’ assistant

Lady Vols hire Texas Tech head coach Craig Snider.

Tennessee announced on Sunday the hiring of assistant coach Craig Snider. Snider served as Texas Tech’s softball head coach from 2023-24, compiling a 60-43 record.

“This position generated a lot of interest, and we could not have found a better fit,” Lady Vols’ head coach Karen Weekly said. “Craig is widely known as one of the best hitting coaches and offensive minds in the game of softball.

“His track record for developing versatile and dynamic offenses speaks for itself. He is a teacher who loves helping players reach their potential, and his players love working with him. Building strong relationships is key in both recruiting and player development, and Craig has proven to be exceptional in that regard.”

Snider will serve as the Lady Vols’ hitting coach.
