The Denver Broncos are set to host the Minnesota Vikings in a Sunday Night Football showdown in Week 11.

The Broncos are set to travel 19,930 miles this season and face the 12th-hardest strength of schedule in the league. Before any flexes, Denver’s initial schedule includes four prime-time games.

The Broncos will play nine games at their home Empower Field at Mile High Stadium this year and eight games on the road. Because the league has an unbalanced 17-game schedule, the NFC and AFC rotate between having an extra home game. This year, the AFC gets a ninth home game.

Denver quarterback Russell Wilson will aim to bounce back this fall after a disappointing first season with the Broncos in 2022. Wilson should be helped by the arrival of new head coach Sean Payton, a QB guru.

Broncos have a chance to make a statement in prime time

Over the next two weeks, the Broncos can prove to a national audience that they are playoff contenders.

The Denver Broncos won back-to-back games going into their bye, but the team is still only 3-5 coming out of the break.

Are the Broncos a true contender to get back into the playoff hunt, or were those pre-bye victories more of a fluke than a sign of things to come? We’ll find out soon enough.

Denver is set to play the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 10 followed by a Sunday Night Football showdown with the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11. The Broncos will now have a national audience looking on as they attempt to prove they are a serious team going into the second half of the season.

“I think it’s something we bring up,” coach Sean Payton said earlier this week when asked about the team playing in prime time in consecutive weeks. “The one thing we do know is if you’re significant, you begin to play on a lot of these hours and these primetime night games — Thursday night, Christmas Eve, Sunday night, Monday night. The less significant you become, your chances of — you might play one of those a year.

“For us, it’s two-fold. We’re playing good teams. Buffalo has been a perennial playoff team and right on the cusp of being in a handful of Super Bowls. [They are] a team that we have got great respect for. Sean [McDermott] has been fantastic there in what he’s done, and I think they present a huge challenge, especially in Buffalo in the month of November. … To play them on Monday night, those are great challenges. The competitor in you wants to play in front of large audiences and in important games, so these are those opportunities.”

If the Broncos win at least one of their next two games and look competitive in each contest, national pundits might start to believe Denver is capable of making a playoff push. If the Broncos are dominated by the Bills on prime time, on the other hand, the pre-bye hype will quickly fade away. Denver has talked the talk, now it’s time to back it up on the field.

NFL won’t flex Broncos-Vikings out of ‘Sunday Night Football’

The NFL won’t flex the Broncos-Vikings game out of ‘Sunday Night Football’ in Week 11. Denver will play in prime time in consecutive weeks.

Prime time!

The NFL had until Tuesday night to make a flex decision on the Denver Broncos vs. Minnesota Vikings game set for Sunday Night Football in Week 11. The league was proactive, making a decision last night instead.

The NFL has informed the Broncos that the game will remain a SNF matchup, the team confirmed on Sunday evening. So the club will now play in prime time in consecutive weeks.

First, Denver will go on the road to face the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 10 (Nov. 13). After that, the Broncos will host the Vikings on Sunday Night Football in Week 11 (Nov. 19).

Denver is 3-5 but the team is coming off consecutive victories (including a 24-9 upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs) followed by a Week 9 bye. Meanwhile, the Vikings (5-4) are suddenly more intriguing after quarterback Josh Dobbs arrived via trade on Tuesday and then led them a 31-28 win on Sunday.

NFL needs to make ‘SNF’ flex decision for Broncos vs. Vikings

The NFL needs to make a flex decision on the 3-5 Broncos and Kirk Cousins-less Vikings playing on ‘Sunday Night Football’ by Tuesday night.

Story update: The NFL has decided against flexing the Broncos-Vikings game in Week 11. The game will remain an SNF matchup. See our original post below. 

After playing the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 10, the Denver Broncos are currently scheduled to host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football in Week 11. Keyword: currently scheduled.

The Broncos are 3-5 coming out of their bye and the Vikings lost quarterback Kirk Cousins to a season-ending Achilles injury. So the Denver-Minnesota game isn’t exactly viewed as a must-watch game for a national TV audience.

The NFL will need to make a decision on potentially flexing the Broncos-Vikings game out of SNF soon. From the NFL’s flexing guidelines (emphasis added):

For Sunday Night Football in Weeks 5-13 and for Monday Night Football in Weeks 12-17, the NFL will decide (after consultation with CBS, FOX, NBC, and ESPN) and announce no later than 12 days in advance of the game, which game will be played on Sunday night and which game will be played on Monday night.

Denver and Minnesota are set to face off on Nov. 19, so the NFL has to make a decision on a potential flex by the evening of Nov. 7 (Tuesday). If there’s no flex, the Broncos will be set to play in prime time in consecutive weeks. Let’s ride.

Here is a look at the predictions from each of our writers at Chargers Wire:

The Chargers are a more talented team and they should win this game with ease. But it’s the Chargers and no matter who they’re playing, they have to make every game, win or lose, in nail-biting fashion. Justin Herbert and company should put up points against a Bears defense that has seemed to turn the corner, but they’re one of the worst in the red zone. Chicago should find the end zone against a struggling Bolts defense. Ultimately, the Chargers do enough to win this contest barely.

Chargers 27, Bears 24

Alex K:

It’s important to remember that Los Angeles’ struggles in the last two weeks have come against two top-five defenses. Chicago’s defense, meanwhile, is 28th in DVOA with a terrible pass rush. The Chargers should be able to move the ball even with their injury situation at wide receiver. Defensively, LA needs to bring their corners closer to the line of scrimmage against Tyson Bagent, who has the lowest air yards per attempt of any quarterback of the last decade.

The Chargers are looking for a way to snap their two-game losing streak out of the BYE. On paper, this game against the Bears should be a chance to get one back. It’s probably the “easiest” game LA has left on its schedule.

And yet, there should be some hesitation. The Chargers have put up just 17 points on offense in their last two games. Things, in theory, should be easier against a worse Bears’ front, but will Justin Herbert and Kellen Moore each have complete games, respectively?

On the defensive side of the ball, the Chargers have to contend with Tyson Bagent starting at quarterback. While he isn’t a Justin Fields-level threat offensively, he’s been able to execute what Chicago has asked him to do effectively. D.J. Moore is still an explosive weapon and Chicago can run the ball.

On paper, the Chargers are the much more talented team in this one. But it’s the game plan that should worry fans. If the Bolts come into this one with some aggression and spark defensively, this game should go well. If Michael Davis is yet again peeled back in coverage several yards off of the line, it could be a long one. I’m guessing the former scenario will take place as Brandon Staley, Herbert, and the Chargers find themselves back in the winner’s circle again.
