As deadline nears, will NFL dare flex out Cowboys-49ers game in Week 15?

The combatants aren’t good, and the deadline to make a decision draws closer. Will the NFL move out Cowboys-49ers?

The Dallas Cowboys’ 2020 season has been anything but enjoyable for the fanbase. As the team has plummeted to a 3-8 record and standing as good a chance as holding a top 3 pick as they do appearing in a playoff game, the campaign has been an abject failure. Injuries have mounted to epic proportions and the team has been unable to right the ship.

Perhaps the only team that has suffered similar catastrophic injuries across the board, and possibly moreso, have been the San Francisco 49ers.  At 5-8, they are at the bottom of their own division and even though their efforts have been more gallant, they have barely been more fruitful. The fact that the two are scheduled to face each other in Week 15 wouldn’t normally register o the radar, except for the fact that it is a Sunday Night Football affair.

Will it remain that way? Since 2006, the league has had the ability to flex out the SNF matchup if it isn’t appealing to a broad audience. From Week 11, the league can swap out the predetermined matchup and replace it with something more enticing. They just need to decide 12 days in advance.

That means the deadline to flex out the December 20 matchup will be Tuesday, December 8. That means prior to the Cowboys taking on the Ravens in their moved-twice-matchup of Week 13.

As logical as it seems on the surface though, the game likely won’t be moved.

For one, the rules of what can and can’t be flexed make it difficult. The most intriguing matchup on the Week 15 schedule is a potential Super Bowl preview as the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints collide.

However, each network is allowed to protect one game a week, and CBS would be pretty crazy to let that matchup get moved over to NBC, which hosts SNF.  The late-afternoon games draw just as much of an audience as the night games, anyway. The rest of the Week 15 schedule isn’t nearly as appetizing.

There’s Patriots-Dolphins and Bears-Vikings and… that’s about it.

The NFL isn’t stupid. Please, hold your jokes for a moment. The league knows which organizations butter their bread when it comes to getting eyeballs on their TV screens. In a season where viewership is more important than ever thanks to COVID-19 culling the in-person crowd at every venue across the U.S., the Cowboys are even more important than they have been in the past.

The latest example was when more people watched the Dallas-Washington suckfest on Thanksgiving than any other game this season; over 33 million sets tuned in.

So while Cowboys-49ers doesn’t seem enthralling on the surface, tens of millions of people will still tune in. Partially because so many want to see the Cowboys struggle, they still bring in a contingent of league fans outside of Cowboys Nation. The 49ers have national cache as well, so even though it’s likely to be a matchup of sub-.500 teams, it’s probably a safe bet the game stays right where it is, in primetime.

Draymond Green reacts to D.K. Metcalf’s incredible chase down tackle during Seahawks vs. Cardinals

Following D.K. Metcalf’s chase down tackle against Budda Baker to save a touchdown for the Seahawks, Draymond Green chimed in on Twitter.

Following an exciting slate of NFL action, the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals squared off for week seven’s primetime matchup on Sunday Night Football.

During the divisional battle, MVP front runner Russell Wilson was able to push the Seahawks to an early 13-7 lead. However, the All-Pro quarterback made a rare mistake in the second quarter. With Seattle in the red zone, Wilson threw into the hands of Arizona’s Pro Bowl safety Budda Baker.

As Baker broke in the opposite direction, the Seahawks’ 6-foot-4, 240 lb wide receiver began to sprint to chase down the Cardinals’ safety turned ball carrier. In an incredible effort, D.K. Metcalf showed off his blazing speed to catch Baker on the two-yard line.

Via @NFL on Twitter:

According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Metcalf traveled 114 yards. During his sprint to catch Baker, the 22-year-old wide receiver reached a max speed of 22.64 MPH.

Via @NextGenStats on Twitter:

Metcalf’s touchdown-saving tackle got the attention of the Golden State Warriors former Defensive Player of the Year. On Twitter, Draymond Green had a shoutout for the Seahawks pass catcher.

Via @Money23Green on Twitter:

Despite Baker’s interception setting up the Cardinals on the two-yard line, Kyler Murray’s offense failed to score, keeping the game at 13-7.

However, back and forth scores from both the Seahawks and Cardinals, the Sunday Night Football game was pushed into overtime with the game tied at 34.

Following another interception from Wilson in overtime, the Cardinals were able to complete their wild comeback, 37-34, with a field goal on the game’s final play from Zane Gonzalez.

While the Cardinals will head on a bye week, the Seahawks will play host to the Golden State Warriors San Francisco neighbor in week 8. The San Francisco 49ers and Seahawks are slated to kick off next Sunday at 1:25 P.M. PST.

WATCH: Former Longhorn Quandre Diggs picks off former Sooners QB

Former Longhorn and current Seattle Seahawk safety Quandre Diggs picked off former Sooners QB Kyler Murray on Sunday Night Football.

Another former Longhorn was creating opportunities for his offense on Sunday Night Football. Current Seattle Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs has made a living in the NFL with being a ball hawk. He continued that on Sunday night. With his team clinging to a three-point lead in the fourth quarter he stuck again.

Former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray was trying to get his team into position to at least tie the game. He overthrew his intended target and Diggs was there to pick up the pieces as he dove for the errant throw. That marked his first interception on the season and his 10th in his career. Late in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks were clinging to a three-point lead as time was winding down.

Cris Collinsworth didn’t seem thrilled about having to wear a mask during ‘SNF’

“I don’t know who I am.”

Tonight’s broadcast of the Philadelphia Eagles-San Francisco 49ers Sunday Night Football game looked a bit different as Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth were wearing masks in the booth.

Masks, as we know all too well right now, are the best way for us to beat COVID-19. If you aren’t masked up when out in public then you’re running the risk of catching the virus or passing it along.

Michaels explained that officials had asked them to wear masks during the game so they are going to wear masks during the game. Collinsworth, however, didn’t seem all that thrilled about it.

Here was his reaction:

Collinsworth seemed really annoyed about having to do something that really isn’t that hard to do.

He also made the mistake of not wearing it correctly:

The more we wear masks the quicker we can hopefully get back to normal. So mask up, people.

WATCH: Quandre Diggs gets ejected from Sunday Night Football

Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs was ejected from Sunday Night Football after a hit on N’Keal Harry. You can watch the incident here:

Sunday Night Football between the Seattle Patriots and New England Patriots is a big one, with both teams coming into the matchup 1-0. It featured two of the best coaches in the NFL, Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick.

Starting at safety for the Seahawks was former Texas defensive back Quandre Diggs. The sixth-year player was looking to slow down Patriots’ starting quarterback Cam Newton in the air.

Towards the end of the first quarter, Newton led N’Keal Harry across the middle of the field with a pass. Diggs flew down from his safety position, laying a violent hit on the wide receiver.

Not only did he acquire a personal foul, unnecessary roughness for 15 yards but Diggs was ejected from the game.

Somehow, Harry was able to complete the catch and hang on, even after the hit. He also jumped onto his feet quickly for a head to head collision.

Report: NBC nixes idea of trading Al Michaels to ESPN

Al Michaels will be staying at NBC and on Sunday Night Football, per a New York Post report

Well, it was fun while the idea lasted. However, Al Michaels will not be returning to Monday Night Football through a trade between NBC and ESPN.

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported the Peacock will keep its star play-by-play guy in the SNF booth.

“We look forward to Al completing his contract and calling ‘Sunday Night Football’ games on NBC,” Greg Hughes, an NBC Sports spokesman, told The Post.

ESPN declined comment.

Reports indicated ESPN as looking to ramp up its broadcast booth of MNF, going from Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland, a heavily criticized coupling, to Michael and Peyton Manning. With Michaels out of the mix, the Post says ESPN is formulating other plans while not having told its current team it is out.

Though Tessitore and/or McFarland are not out yet, ESPN has formed several plans as it tries to figure out its Monday night booth. The Post previously reported ESPN’s interest in Philip Rivers. Rivers has said he intends to continue playing. ESPN passed on Kurt Warner for Jason Witten two years ago, but Warner is a name that can’t be ruled out.

Other names to keep an eye on per Marchand are: CBS’ Ian Eagle or FOX’s Kevin Burkhardt. Both are under contract, but are No. 2s on their networks’ NFL play-by-play depth charts, so there might be a more amenable compensation scenario as “Monday Night” could be looked upon as a promotion. Kevin Harlan, who is CBS’ No. 3 on the NFL and calls Monday night games for Westwood One radio, could also be considered.

Internally, ESPN has toyed with the idea of a booth with Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Brian Griese, according to sources. The trio did the back end of the “Monday Night” doubleheader last year. ESPN is hesitant to move Chris Fo

The Kansas City Chiefs (10-4) travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears (7-7) Sunday night at Soldier Field. If the Chiefs can win their next two games, they have an excellent shot at the No. 2 overall seed and that much important first-round bye in the playoffs.

Chiefs vs. Bears

  • When: Sunday, December 22
  • Time: 8:20 p.m. ET
  • TV: NBC
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Patrick Mahomes is throwing the ball extremely well as of late and the Chiefs have won their last four games, including a 20-3 rout of the Broncos at home last weekend. With an AFC West title in hand after defeating the Raiders in Week 13, Mahomes completed 27 of 34 passes for 340 yards, two touchdowns against the Broncos. The running game did struggle, as Darwin Thompson led the team with just eight carries for 38 yards. It’s no secret, with weapons like the speedy Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce that KC is going to air it out. The team is ranked fifth in total offense (384.4 YPG) and third in passing (291.4 YPG).

Defensively, they held Denver to 260 yards of total offense. Tyrann Mathieu paved the way with five tackles and one sack, while rookie Juan Thornhill added four tackles and an interception. The unit added linebacker Terrell Suggs from the Cardinals this week. Suggs is a hard-nosed, gritty linebacker, who brings a veteran presence and Super Bowl experience to the team. While Kansas City is 11th in pass defense (225.1 YPG), the team has struggled against the run, ranking 26th (131.5 YPG).

The Chicago Bears are eliminated from playoff contention, but that won’t stop them from trying to play spoiler in their final stretch of the season. Chicago fell 21-13 last week to the Packers in a game that saw quarterback Mitch Trubisky throw the ball 53 times. He completed just 29 of those attempts for a total of 334 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Both teams will need to get their running game going to take the pressure off their quarterbacks.

While the Chiefs rank near the top of most major offensive categories, the Bears are near the bottom. This game will come down to the Kansas City offense against a Chicago defense that is third in points allowed (18.1 PPG). Can the defensive front put pressure on Mahomes and how will the secondary stack up against the Chiefs offensive weapons?
