Vince Carter reveals NBA’s dunk contest plans that featured top stars

Vince Carter reveals the NBA’s dunk contest plans that featured top stars, including Lebron James and Kobe Bryant.

[autotag]Vince Carter[/autotag] reveals NBA’s dunk contest plans that featured the biggest stars but failed due to lack of participation.

According to Carter, the NBA schemed up every hoop fan’s dream of a slam dunk contest that would’ve featured Lebron James, Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, and Carter himself. The story was revealed on Fanduel’s flagship NBA show, Run it Back, and caught the attention of the masses as speculation took over on why the dream dunk contest did not happen.

The story becomes even more bizarre when it is revealed that each star would’ve walked away with 1 million dollars each, giving a hefty incentive to put on a show for the crowd. Fans pinpointed James as why, seeing the other three testing their luck in the competition.

Undoubtedly there is no way to confirm or deny why this lineup didn’t take place, but it’s fun to think about what could’ve been arguably the greatest dunk contest of all time.

On this day: No-look Dee Brown dunk; doomed Fortson trade made

On this day in Celtics history, Dee Brown flushed his famous no-look dunk, and Danny Fortson was dealt to Toronto in a failed trade.

On this day in Boston Celtics history in 1991, guard DeCovan Kadell (better known to fans of the Celtics by his nickname as “Dee”) Brown threw down one of the most famous dunks of all time in that year’s All-Star Game Slam Dunk Competition.

Brown, a rookie recently picked up by the Celtics out of north Florida’s Jacksonville University with the 19th overall selection of the 1990 NBA draft, made a lasting impression on NBA fans around the world with the flush, which was (and still is) among the flashiest dunks ever completed at the All-Star Week’s annual dunk contest.

The event also featured Shawn Kemp of the Seattle Supersonics, Rex Chapman of the Charlotte Hornets, Kenny Smith of the Houston Rockets, Kenny Williams of the Indiana Pacers, Blue Edwards of the Utah Jazz, Otis Smith of the Orlando Magic, and Kendall Gill of the Atlanta Hawks.

Reports: KJ Martin accepts, Jalen Green declines 2023 NBA dunk contest invites

Third-year #Rockets forward KJ Martin is reportedly accepting an invitation to join the NBA’s 2023 dunk contest at All-Star Weekend, but second-year guard Jalen Green has declined.

Third-year Houston Rockets forward KJ Martin plans to participate in the NBA’s 2023 dunk contest at All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City, but second-year guard Jalen Green has declined. The news was first reported Sunday by Shams Charania and Kelly Iko of The Athletic.

Martin, a high-flying forward drafted in the 2020 second round by the Rockets, was clearly disappointed after not being invited by the league to join the 2022 dunk contest. A year later, the 22-year-old gets his wish granted with an opportunity on the big stage.

Green didn’t win the 2022 contest, and in subsequent comments, he vowed to return in 2023 and perhaps avenge his loss. However, his thinking seems to have changed over the past 11 months.

Green, Martin and the rest of the 2022-23 Rockets return to the court Sunday night versus Minnesota. Both players are likely to be asked about their decisions by local media members at Toyota Center.

Martin, the son of former NBA All-Star Kenyon Martin, is averaging 10.4 points (55% FG) and 4.8 rebounds in 24 minutes per game this season. Green is averaging 21.6 points (40.9% FG, 32.5% on 3-pointers), 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 34.4 minutes.

How can the NBA make All-Star week’s Dunk Contest better?

Once the premier attraction among all of the annual NBA All-Star game special events, the league’s dunk contest has grown a bit stale; can it be revived?

Once the premier attraction among all of the annual NBA All-Star game special events, the league’s dunk contest has grown a bit stale, with a lot of retro dunks being re-attempted by a new generation while few new twists get added to the game.

Controversial scoring in recent years has also not helped the cause of keeping the dunk contest relevant, leading to all sorts of suggestions on how the NBA might breathe new life into one of the historically most important parts of All-Star week festivities. To explore this line of thinking, ESPN’s “Courtside Club” with host Rachel DeMita linked up with NBA host and entrepreneur Christian Crosby.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the duo have to say on ways to make a hallmark event of a hallmark celebration relevant again in future All-Star events.

Rockets rookie Jalen Green vows to return to NBA dunk contest in 2023

Rockets rookie Jalen Green on the NBA’s slam dunk contest: “I for sure need a run-back. I messed up. I need to run that back. We’ll figure it out. I’ll be here next year.”

The 2022 NBA slam dunk contest didn’t go as planned for Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green, who had a series of miscues Saturday in an attempted collaboration with teammate Josh Christopher.

Green eventually threw down a pair of dunks, but the judging panel clearly docked him points for the amount of time it took. Nonetheless, in a 2021-22 season primarily about development and learning experiences, the 20-year-old is looking at the dunk snafu through a similar lens.

“I for sure need a run-back,” said Green, adding that he “enjoyed every minute” of the experience at All-Star Weekend in Cleveland. “I messed up. I need to run that back next year. We’ll figure it out.”

“Next year,” Green said. “I’ll be here next year.”

In his remarks to reporters, Green also made it clear that he isn’t blaming Christopher, who was attempting to set him up with passes.

“You’re going to make or miss a dunk,” Green said. “I missed too much to win. It was still fun. I’m glad I got to go out there. There was nothing wrong with Josh, nothing on him at all. You miss or make those, especially when you try to do a dunk like that. It’s pretty challenging.”

“I just missed,” Green concluded. “It’s just that simple. “I just missed. I had the height. I had the power. I got up there. It just didn’t go in.”

NBA Twitter reacts to brutal dunk contest: ‘Let’s never talk about it again’

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to a poor, unfulfilling Slam Dunk Contest.

The 2022 NBA slam dunk contest was a hapless event in which Knicks’ Obi Toppin ended up winning against Golden State’s Juan Toscano-Anderson. Jalen Green and Cole Anthony repeatedly missed their dunks and never recovered.

NBA players, media members, and fans reacted on Twitter to what was an underwhelming moment in the All-Star Weekend.

NBA fans were not thrilled by this year’s Slam Dunk Contest

Obi Toppin ran away with a victory on Saturday night after Juan Toscano-Anderson ran out of attempts on his final dunk.

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest was once nearly as big an affair as the All-Star Game itself. We all have our favorite whether that be Vince Carter’s monster performance in 2000 or a more recent event like the 2016 showdown between Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine.

This year’s contest proved to be a bit anticlimactic, though. New York Knicks forward Obi Toppin rolled to a relatively easy victory, having the high score in the first round and essentially winning by default in the finals after fellow finalist Juan Toscano-Anderson ran out of attempts on his second dunk.

There were certainly iconic moments from Toppin’s performance, and while it wasn’t his highest-scoring dunk, it’s hard not to be impressed with this one that sealed his advancement into the final round. Toppin tossed it off the glass and slammed it home with a windmill through the legs.

There were also some, shall we say, interesting moments. Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony led off the contest by channeling his inner New Yorker, donning a pair of Timberlands and wearing the Knicks jersey that his father, Greg Anthony, once wore. The elder Anthony also gave his son the assist.

But Anthony’s run came to an end prematurely as he ran out of attempts on his second dunk and was eliminated in the first round.

That proved to be a recurring theme throughout the contest, as many of the candidates took several tries before successfully executing the dunk. Some fans were disappointed with the showing, which was far from one of the most exciting dunk contests in recent years.

Here were some of the best reactions on Twitter.

WATCH: Jalen Green throws it down in 2022 NBA slam dunk contest

Rockets rookie Jalen Green threw down two impressive dunks in the NBA’s 2022 slam dunk contest, but he appeared to take too much time in doing so, based on the reaction.

One night after a spectacular showing in the NBA’s Rising Stars tournament, Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green tried to put on another show in Saturday’s slam dunk contest at 2022 All-Star Weekend.

Unfortunately, Green finished third among four entrants after taking far too long to make his initial dunk, and that resulted in him being eliminated after the first round. Green got 83 points from judges out of a maximum of 100, which wasn’t enough to beat out New York’s Obi Toppin (the eventual winner) and Golden State’s Juan Toscano-Anderson.

Here’s a look at Green’s dunks, along with real-time reaction on social media. The general consensus was that the dunks were impressive, but Green simply had too many missed opportunities before finally putting in his first dunk, which was rated 38 out of 50. The amount of time it took seemed to be viewed as a negative by the Cleveland crowd, as well as the panel of judges (including former Rockets star Clyde Drexler).

With All-Star activities in the books, Green and the Rockets will resume their 2021-22 regular season next Friday in Orlando.

All-Star Saturday night: Rockets rookie Jalen Green competes in NBA slam dunk contest

After an elite showing in the Rising Stars tournament at All-Star Weekend, Rockets rookie Jalen Green now hopes to win the NBA’s slam dunk contest. Here’s our live blog to watch his progress.

One night after an elite showing in the Rising Stars tournament at All-Star Weekend, Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green is hoping to win the NBA’s slam dunk contest on Saturday night in Cleveland.

“I have some exciting things planned,” Green said earlier this week. “It’s going to be a show. It’s going to be fun. I’ve been dreaming about moments like this, and I have to make the best of it. I have some ideas planned, but I don’t want to say too much, but it is going to be exciting.”

Though he is only 20 years old, Green — the No. 2 overall pick from the first round of the 2021 NBA draft — is a slight betting favorite to win. His dunk contest rivals will be New York’s Obi Toppin, Orlando’s Cole Anthony, and Golden State’s Juan Toscano-Anderson.

Here’s a look at when to watch, as well as real-time reaction as it happens from fans of the Rockets and others across the league.
