Alabama punter Skyler DeLong is back on team roster, but will he stay?

On Tuesday morning, DeLong was back on Alabama’s team roster, but will he stay?

Last night, Alabama punter Skyler Delong was no longer listed on the Alabama team roster, and according to sources, Long has not entered the transfer portal.

By Tuesday morning, he was back on Alabama’s team roster. But according to 247Sports:

“his initial removal was not a mistake…the door isn’t completely closed on DeLong’s time at Alabama. He is mulling things over and could still choose to stay.”

So, there’s no certainty for what DeLong will choose to do.

We could see him stay, or he might choose to transfer. It looks like this is still up in the air. And there doesn’t seem to be a timeline for when his decision will be made.

DeLong played in 12 in the past two seasons, 5 of which were in 2019.

In his career, he has recorded 26 punts for 881 yards, and averaged 33.9 yards per punt. 7 punts landed inside the 20 yard line, and 2 punts were 50+ yards.

He was eventually replaced by freshman Ty Perine who went on to be named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you up to date on the very latest regarding DeLong and his future.

Nick Saban did comment on DeLong during Alabama’s 2019 A-day game:

“See, nobody wants to talk about the punter. But that guy was a freshman last year, aight, and he was like very, very nervous. And he’s gotten a lot better. And people should believe in development. Everybody wants an immediate outcome instead of focusing on what you have to do to get an outcome.”

Analysis: Skyler DeLong’s collegiate career has been inconsistent to say the least. At good as the South Carolina native has looked at times, whether that be in practice or during games, there have been as many — or more — occasions where he struggled.

Through two years, he’s only punted 26 times and only averaged 33.9 yards with those limited opportunities. His struggles is 2019 led to freshman walk-on Ty Perine and redshirt senior Mike Bernier moving ahead of him on the depth chart.

With Bernier gone and Perine having his own share of inconsistencies in practice leading up to the Citrus Bowl, it is possible that DeLong could reclaim the starting job, but it’ll be an uphill battle for the former highly-recruited punter.
