Skip Bayless shreds NFL refs for being afraid to flag Ravens vs. Bengals

Skip Bayless had some thoughts about the refs choking away the Bengals vs. Ravens game.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow took a beating during Thursday night’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Burrow took multiple unflagged late hits and in the fourth quarter, had two infractions involving his facemask simply not called. One of those happened on the game-deciding two-point attempt that failed.

Onlookers are livid, with Skip Bayless actually leading the way by saying the NFL ruined one of the best games he’s ever seen.

“How can you let Baltimore, in Baltimore, get away with hitting Joe Burrow in the head twice on the last drive?” Bayless said. “One grab of the facemask. One smash to the facemask and you don’t call that? That’s just choking. That’s just the refs afraid to reach for the yellow in the Ravens stadium because they’re afraid of the Ravens fans.”

Usually, reactions like these about officiating fall into hyperbole and are easily dismissed. But when the official broadcast of the game is calling out the missed flags — and noting it has been a problem all year — it’s hard to handwave away.

The Bengals missed plenty of opportunities to put Thursday night’s game away and move to 5-5. Instead, they’re 4-6 after blowing a big lead. But yes, it would be nice if all-time classics like Thursday night — and any game, for that matter — weren’t marred by strange officiating hiccups so consistently.

Skip Bayless really called Tom Brady the Daniel Jones of NFL broadcasters. Ouch!

That’s a little harsh, Skip.

Tom Brady has certainly gotten better on the air for Fox Sports since Week 1 of the NFL season on the air, even if his Las Vegas Raiders ownership restrictions are a problem.

But comparing him to Daniel Jones? That’s a bit much, although it’s coming from Skip Bayless, who’s known for being a bit much.

“As a TV analyst, he’s nothing but Daniel Jones,” Bayless said. “I’m sorry, but Tom Brady drove me nuts yesterday during the Detroit-Green Bay game with his endless, giddy, Captain Obvious blabber. He just talks and talks and talks some more about what is so cliched, obvious, so Patriots-Brady-talking-to-the-media-obvious. So ‘eager to be nice guy Tom’ obvious.”

Harsh!

Skip Bayless shocks everyone by revealing Friday was his final Undisputed show with FS1

Skip Bayless is out at FS1 and Undisputed. What’s next?

We knew this much: there was a report last month that Skip Bayless would be leaving FS1 and Undisputed, the show he co-hosted for eight years.

What we didn’t know is when that exactly would happen. But now we do. Thanks to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Bayless, we know that Friday was his last show and that he was leaving FS1.

“I’ve been planning to pursue other opportunities for several months,” he wrote. “I had a great 8-year run with a lot of great people at FOX, but now I’m excited for what’s coming up. Stay tuned.”

So what is next? Great question. We’ll see.

‘Undisputed’ is impressed by optimism surrounding Commanders

Noted Cowboys’ fan, Skip Bayless is “scared” of the Commanders?

Not only are the Commanders causing optimism in the DMV, but Wednesday, the cast of Undisputed, also expressed optimism for the Commanders this season.

Here is some of how they wrapped up their segment discussing Daniel Jones and the New York Giants.

Skip Bayless: “The Commanders scare me.”

Rachel Nichols: “They’re very good; hey, I’m telling you, Skip.”

Bayless: “They got our defensive coordinator as their head coach, and they got about half of our free agents.”

Keyshawn Johnson: “And Micah Parsons might want to go over there too if they don’t pay him.”

Nichols: “I saw Josh Harris yesterday at Summer League because he’s got both teams now, the Sixers and the Commanders. And he is so pumped. And I think that franchise again (Redskins), I’m saying the old name because that is the team that got me into sports. I loved that team growing up, and they have been a very, very hard team to be a fan of for a very, very long time. The ownership, all the way down, the decisions on the field, everything. I cannot tell you the optimism in my hometown for this team and what is ahead. It is off the charts, and you don’t see that with the Giants in New York.”

Johnson: “If the other owner (Snyder) was the owner right now with the same makeup of the team, I wouldn’t be scared, Skip, if I was you. But like Rachel is saying, you got Josh and you got Magic and all of those guys and a real coach (Dan Quinn). They are doing things the right way.”

Bayless: “I just feel the momentum, and there’s no better football town in America when they’re rolling.”

Johnson to Nichols: “Did they change the lyrics to the song?

Nichols: “Yes, they did. When I was a kid and very rarely got to go to a game, and the stands would shake in that old RFK Stadium?”

Bayless: “I’ve been there many times, and the press box would shake.”

Nichols: “The way this city embraces a team when it’s good, it’s fantastic. I think it is going to be a huge year for them. I think the Giants with Daniel Jones? Not much.”

Johnson: “When I got there, it was a dump.”

Nichols: “Of course, it was a dump. That is why it literally moved when the team scored. The entire stadium moved!”

Sports talk personality Skip Bayless is reportedly leaving FS1’s ‘Undisputed’

Skip Bayless has hosted “Undisputed” since he left ESPN in 2016.

After co-host Shannon Sharpe left last summer, FS1 sports talk show “Undisputed” may be undergoing an even more seismic change.

On Monday, Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post reported that Skip Bayless, who has hosted the show for the last eight years, will be leaving the network with his last show set for later this summer.

Bayless, one of the biggest names in sports media, left ESPN in what was seen as something of a coup back in 2016. He had previously hosted the show “First Take” for the network from 2007-16.

Now, he’s reportedly a free agent again.

Glasspiegel reports that the show has seen a dip in ratings since Sharpe’s departure following the 2023 NBA Finals. After taking several months off, the program returned with a new format that featured a rotating panel of guests joining Bayless.

Bayless was reaching the end of his current deal with Fox Sports, which the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported in 2021 to be worth $32 million over four years.

According to Glasspiegel, “Undisputed” is expected to continue without Bayless.

Skip Bayless wants JJ Redick to be the Lakers’ next head coach

Why does Skip Bayless want JJ Redick, who has no coaching experience, to be the next head coach of LeBron James and the Lakers?

The Los Angeles Lakers have several candidates to replace Darvin Ham as their next head coach. But the one people have been talking about more than the others is JJ Redick.

Redick had a long and successful playing career in the NBA as a 3-point specialist. He shot 41.5% from 3-point range for his career and made a living by knocking down long-range shots with one or even more than one defender in his face.

More recently, he has become a commentator for NBA games on ESPN, as well as LeBron James’ co-host on the “Mind the Game” podcast.

While many are likely cringing at the mere suggestion of Redick being a coaching candidate for the Lakers, Skip Bayless loves it. In fact, he believes  Redick is the one the Lakers should go ahead and hire.

“I’ll be honest with you — I’m saying this very selfishly — I want to see JJ Redick coach the Lakers,” said Bayless. “We all know that JJ and LeBron have been doing great new podcast — X’s and O’s, basketball breakdown at the highest levels, deepest levels, great stuff. LeBron has been able to look into JJ’s mind and see the future. (Does) JJ have a little Pat Riley in him? He’s got the swagger, he’s got the look and the looks. He played at a pretty high level. … He knows what it feels like to be criticized. He can take the heat. He can give as good as he gets. He would be great for me, for us, for “Undisputed,” for our business, for everybody in this business because we would all be on the edge of our seats night after night to see how long JJ could last with LeBron. It would be a great experiment. It would be a ratings bonanza, both for the Lakers and for every show that talks about the Lakers.”

The biggest problem is Redick has absolutely no coaching experience, unless helping out his son’s grade-school basketball team counts. Going straight from being a player and commentator to being an NBA head coach, especially the head coach of the James-led Lakers, would likely be too steep a transition, even for someone as sharp and cocksure as Redick.

Skip Bayless: I would take Baker Mayfield over Dak Prescott

Fox Sports’ Skip Bayless says he’d rather have Baker Mayfield than Dak Prescott as the Dallas Cowboys’ starting quarterback

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a gamble at quarterback last year, signing former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield to a cheap one-year deal to compete with recent second-round pick Kyle Trask for the starting job.

Mayfield won that job easily, and proceeded to have the best season of his NFL career, earning a Pro Bowl berth and leading the Bucs to a third straight NFC South title and fourth consecutive playoff appearance. He put up better numbers and led the Bucs to more wins than Tom Brady in Tampa Bay the prior year.

The Bucs rewarded Mayfield with a new three-year contract extension and a massive raise, but he’s still one of the more affordable quality starters in the league.

In fact, Fox Sports talking head and die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan Skip Bayless recently said he’d rather have Mayfield at quarterback than Dak Prescott:

Prescott has put up impressive numbers throughout his tenure in Dallas, but has fallen short of postseason expectations, and heads into a contract year in 2024 without a new extension on the horizon.

It looks like the Cowboys might be looking for a new starting quarterback before the Bucs will.

Panthers great Cam Newton challenges Skip Bayless to high-stakes shootout

Cam Newton and Skip Bayless may actually be on the verge of competing against one another in a 3-point shootout.

Carolina Panthers great Cam Newton just took his friendly feud with larger-than-life sports personality Skip Bayless a step further.

With the two seemingly on the verge of setting up a 3-point shootout, the NFL’s former Most Valuable Player laid down a pretty serious stipulation in response to Bayless’ recent challenge.

Here’s the clip of Cam’s conditions from Friday’s episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton:

In case you missed it, Bayless may have attempted to strike some fear into Newton (we think) by posting a . . . um . . . nicely-edited video of his latest shooting sesh this past week:

This (obviously) isn’t the first time Skip has hit the hardwood. Bayless actually played high school ball at Northwest Classen in Oklahoma City, Okla.—where he averaged 1.4 points per game during the 1970 season.

Newton isn’t a stranger to the game either. While he may not have a sick highlight heel like Skip’s, Cam did star in Auburn’s intramural basketball league upon a return to his alma mater in 2013.

So, it seems the ball is now in Skip’s court.

Charles Barkley rips Skip Bayless and other Bill Belichick critics

Charles Barkley came to the defense of Bill Belichick and ripped Skip Bayless in the process.

Charles Barkley does not want to hear any slander about former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. He especially hates the slander when it’s coming from the mouth of sports talk show host Skip Bayless.

Bayless is of the opinion that New England’s success was more because of Tom Brady. Bayless has held that opinion for quite a while. The Patriots’ dynasty is back in the spotlight once again due to the success of the Kansas City Chiefs, who won their third Super Bowl in five seasons earlier this month.

Barkley, on the other hand, is more of the opinion that Belichick had an equal hand in the success of the Patriots’ dynasty. Barkley made his opinion loud and clear on “The Dan Patrick Show” Friday.

“Let me tell you how stupid some of these guys are on television,” said Barkley. “You know how much I hate Skip Bayless. I hate him with every fiber. Sometimes he makes me want to gain weight back so I can hate him with even more weight. He goes on television and says, ‘If it wasn’t for Tom Brady, Bill wouldn’t have all these championships.’ And I’m like, well, Bill’s the greatest coach ever. [Bayless] says, ‘He only won the Super Bowls because of Tom Brady.’ Well, Andy Reid’s a great coach. Exactly how many championships has he won without Patrick Mahomes?

“…It ain’t right. When you get on television, our job is to be fair and objective, and we’ve got some clowns on television now who are like, ‘Belichick is overrated.’ Dude went to nine Super Bowls. There’s nobody that’s went to nine Super Bowls who is overrated.”

This is a debate that will rage on for years to come.

Both Brady and Belichick benefited greatly from each other’s success. Even though this debate will probably never have a clear winner, Barkley’s stance on the matter might have created a perfect middle ground.

Stephen A. Smith joins Skip Bayless with Joe Burrow vs. Chiefs take Bengals fans will like

Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless are on the same page when it comes to Joe Burrow vs. Chiefs.

The Cincinnati Bengals are the favorites of talking heads right now.

The topic? Which team might just stand the best chance of slowing down Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty by the time next season starts.

First, Skip Bayless hit on these points. And now Stephen A. Smith has done the same on “First Take” recently.

“I think it’s the Cincinnati Bengals because of Joe Burrow,” Smith said. “A healthy Joe Burrow, with Chase and Higgins and Boyd and the crew, I can’t underestimate them…This dude is no joke. Patrick Mahomes has two postseason losses in his career. One is to a seven-time champion named Tom Brady. The other is to Joe Burrow.”

Smith added a question fans will like, too: “When Joe Burrow is healthy, who can he not beat?”

Burrow’s wins over Mahomes go much deeper than quarterback vs. quarterback conversations, of course, but these are the surface-level talking points that make the rounds amongst media and fans that grab attention.

And Smith does go on to point out that Burrow’s Bengals still nearly made the playoffs without him (going 9-8 in a historically strong division that sent the three other teams to the postseason), so adding him healthy back to the mix in 2024 keeps them in the title conversation.
