Patriots offensive line health trending in right direction for Week 4

Help could be coming for the Patriots’ struggling offensive line

The New England Patriots got some positive news on the offensive line on Friday.

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo indicated that guard Sidy Sow has responded well in his return to practice, and he is officially listed as questionable to play in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Sow was banged up in the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders back in August. Now, it looks as though he might have a shot at making his regular-season debut.

Mayo also offered a note on left tackle Demontrey Jacobs, who is a newer addition to the team after being released by the Denver Broncos at the end of August. He had a strong review of the tackle on Friday.

“Big man [6-6, 315]. Very coachable. Does a good job throwing his hands,” said Maye, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “Are there things to work on? 100 percent. But his mentality and attitude has been great. Been getting better every single day.”

The offensive line is undoubtedly a work in progress.

Nevertheless, the possible return of Sow could be a major development. He played well last season, particularly in run-blocking. Right now, the Patriots need any form of stability on the offensive line, and it looks like reinforcements are on the way.

Patriots Week 2 injury report: Starter ruled out for second straight week

Patriots starter ruled out for a second straight week

The New England Patriots released their final Week 2 injury report on Friday, and several key players were on it.

Offensive guard Sidy Sow was once again ruled out on the report for a second straight week due to an ankle injury. The Patriots are already thin along the offensive front, and Sow being out, along with Cole Strange, has created opportunities for Layden Robinson and Michael Jordan.

However, unfortunately for the Patriots, Robinson is also on the injured list, along with safety Kyle Dugger, running back JaMycal Hasty and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr.

All are questionable to play on Sunday.

Dugger forced a fumble and had 12 tackles in the Week 1 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, and Robinson played in 100 percent of the offensive snaps in the game.

The Patriots will look to start the season off 2-0 for the first time since 2019. They’ll have to defeat a 2023 playoff-contending team with a banged-up roster to do so.

Patriots Week 1 injury report: One starter ruled out vs Bengals

The Patriots will be down a starter in Sunday’s game

The New England Patriots released their final injury report on Friday, ahead of Sunday’s Week 1 regular season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

As expected and feared, starting offensive guard Sidy Sow was ruled out after missing multiple practices with an ankle injury. Meanwhile, running back Antonio Gibson, offensive tackle Vederian Low and linebacker Joshua Uche are listed as questionable to play.

Sow not being in the lineup puts even more pressure on the Patriots’ offensive line. The unit has dealt with injuries and talent issues throughout training camp. They’ll now be tasked with filling Sow’s spot at guard, while still playing musical chairs at left tackle.

The good news is Hunter Henry, Oshane Ximines, Anfernee Jennings, Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise Jr. and Christian Elliss have all been removed from the injury report.

This game will be all about overcoming adversity for a Patriots team expected to finish the season with one of the league’s worst records. They have a good enough defense to give them a chance to change that narrative starting on Sunday against the Bengals.

Patriots Week 1 injury report: Key OL starter missing before opener

One key offensive lineman was missing on Wednesday

The first injury report ahead of Sunday’s Week 1 matchup between the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals is out, and the Patriots were missing one key offensive lineman at practice on Wednesday.

Per the report, offensive guard Sidy Sow did not participate in practice due to the ankle injury he sustained in the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

Sow potentially not being available for the opener is a big deal for the Patriots considering all of the struggles they’ve faced along the offensive front. They’re also still missing their other starting guard, Cole Strange.

Veteran Vederian Lowe, who is the team’s projected starter at left tackle, was also limited with an abdominal injury. Here’s the full injury list for the Patriots.

The good news for New England is Hunter Henry being a full participant after missing multiple practices with a foot injury. He’s expected to serve as the Patriots’ top red zone target this season.

That’s an area they’ve struggled with in recent years, and it’s something they must improve at if they hope to win more than four games this time around.

Patriots injured G Sidy Sow shares positive update on health

This is good news for the Patriots’ offensive line

New England Patriots left guard Sidy Sow is recovering well from the ankle injury he sustained in the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

Per the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, Sow indicated that walking around on the injury was “not really an issue.” His current status as he sees it is “day-to-day.”

Sow also admitted he was initially concerned that it was an Achilles injury. However, he knew he had avoided a major injury once he realized his Achilles was still intact.

There is still no timetable on when he will return to action. His presence would clearly be a big boost to the offensive line.

Sow was a key part of the positional group last season. He appeared in 15 games and was a mainstay on an offensive line that struggled throughout the year.

The Patriots open their 2024 season on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. That leaves some additional time for Sow to heal. A return in Week 1 would obviously be a best-case scenario for the team.

Post-game update on OL Sidy Sow is concerning for Patriots

Injuries continue to plague the Patriots’ offensive line

New England Patriots interior offensive lineman Sidy Sow suffered an injury on Sunday that caused him to miss the entire second half of the team’s preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

The Boston Globe’s Christopher Price reported late Sunday that Sow left the locker room in a walking boot.

This is certainly discouraging news for an offensive line that looks to be struggling heading into the season. Sow appeared in 15 games last season and started in 13 of them. He was thrown into the fire right away on an offensive line unit that had plenty of issues.

He’s hoping to build on that effort in his second season with the Patriots, but he’ll have to get healthy first.

Sow’s injury will be worth monitoring for an offensive line that is already struggling with depth issues.

The second-year guard missing any time would be the worst-case scenario for a team that desperately needs to have solid play from the line this year. It certainly makes you wonder if the Patriots should have addressed the positional unit a bit more in free agency.

10 highest-graded players for Patriots offense vs Dolphins, per PFF

PFF’s top-10 offensive players for the Patriots in loss to the Dolphins

It was back to reality for the New England Patriots’ sputtering offense in their Week 8 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The pass protection up front was iffy at best, the run game never got going, receivers couldn’t get open and quarterback Mac Jones turned the ball over.

Rinse, wash and repeat.

No offensive player outside of tight end Pharaoh Brown was given over a 70.0 grade by Pro Football Focus. It didn’t help matters that two of the team’s top receivers, DeVante Parker and Kendrick Bourne, both went down with injuries.

Bourne, who led the team in receptions, yards and touchdowns, will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, while Parker is in concussion protocol. Those injuries create even bigger questions for the Patriots moving forward this season.

Let’s take a look at the top-10 highest-graded offensive players for New England, per PFF, in the loss to the Dolphins.

10 highest-graded players for Patriots offense vs Bills, per PFF

Some unexpected names topped the list of offensive standouts for the Patriots in their Week 7 win over the Bills

The New England Patriots offense came off of life support on Sunday and helped hand the Buffalo Bills a shocking 29-25 loss.

This wasn’t a game where the unit needed to be bailed out by the defense, either. With less than two minutes to go in the game, quarterback Mac Jones led the offense on an eight-play, 75-yard game-winning drive to put Josh Allen and the Bills away.

There was plenty to like from the performance, including the emergence of rookie wide receiver Demario Douglas, who routinely made plays as a runner, receiver and return man.

Kendrick Bourne continued to serve as a reliable receiving target for Jones, and running back Rhamondre Stevenson finally got going. But most importantly, the offensive line finally showed some fight after collapsing like a paper house in a thunderstorm in their previous three games.

Here are the top-10 highest-graded offensive players for the Patriots in Week 7, per Pro Football Focus.

Patriots’ top 10 offensive players in Week 6, per PFF grades

Here are the Patriots’ top offensive performers in Week 6, per PFF grades.

The New England Patriots showed more offensive fight against the Las Vegas Raiders, which isn’t surprising considering they were facing another bad football team.

Coming into the game, the Patriots hadn’t scored a touchdown since their Week 3 meeting with the New York Jets. They’d been beaten and flat out humiliated by the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints by a combined 72-3 scoring margin.

But then the football scheduling gods felt pity on them enough to put a road trip to Las Vegas on their itinerary for a matchup with the Raiders.

The offense still stunk, for the most part, but they finally moved the ball and scored two touchdowns on the legs of running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Rhamondre Stevenson.

Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne also had a huge game leading the Patriots with 10 catches for 89 receiving yards. Backup quarterback Malik Cunningham got a taste of regular season action, but he wasn’t out there long enough for it mean anything.

Here are the top Patriots offensive players in Week 6, per Pro Football Focus grades.

Patriots Week 4 inactives: Davon Godchaux IN, Cole Strange OUT vs Cowboys

Christian Barmore and Davon Godchaux are both active for the Patriots

The New England Patriots will be shorthanded heading into a Week 4 battle with a Dallas Cowboys team that is widely regarded as a Super Bowl contender.

Before the plane left Foxborough, the Patriots announced cornerback Jonathan Jones and guard Cole Strange had been downgraded as out for the game.

Rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez, Myles Bryant and Shaun Wade have done a tremendous job keeping things afloat on the backend of the defense. That effort must continue against a potentially explosive Cowboys offense still looking for a breakout game.

Meanwhile, rookie offensive linemen Atonio Mafi and Sidy Sow will have to step up and fill the void left by Strange.

Here’s the full list of inactives for the Patriots and Cowboys:

The good news for the Patriots is their defensive line will remain intact with Christian Barmore and Davon Godchaux both being listed as active for Sunday’s game.

They’ll need all of the help they can get to survive the battle in the trenches against a Cowboys team capable of dominating on both sides of the ball.
