LSU gets final visit from priority transfer target

LSU is looking to bolster its defensive tackle room in the transfer portal.

LSU will get the final visit from transfer portal defensive tackle [autotag]Jay’viar Suggs[/autotag] on Sunday.

As the Tigers continue their search for a defensive tackle, LSU’s focus has narrowed on the Grand Valley State transfer. Suggs recently included LSU in his top four along with Michigan, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Suggs posted five sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss with Grand Valley State in 2023. After making that impact at the Division II level, he’s ready to try his hand at FBS football.

LSU getting Suggs’ final visit could be a good sign after the Tigers swung and missed on a few of the top defensive tackles in the portal. Prior to the transfer portal opening, head coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said defensive tackle is the only position LSU would chase in the second portal window.

Along with the final visit, LSU could have another advantage in this recruitment with Grand Valley State being the school where Kelly rose to prominence. Kelly coached there for 13 years and won two national titles.

LSU returns just two scholarship defensive tackles that were with the program last year. LSU added [autotag]Shone Washington[/autotag] from the junior college ranks along with Wisconsin transfer [autotag]Gio Paez[/autotag]. The Tigers signed a solid group of defensive tackles from the high school level too, headlined by five-star Louisiana native [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag].

Suggs is unproven at the Power Four level, but he would add more upside to a room that needs it.

Brian Kelly optimistic about the defensive tackle position for 2024

The LSU Tigers currently have nine defensive tackles on the 2023 roster.

The LSU Tigers currently have nine defensive tackles on the 2023 roster. [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag], [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag], [autotag]Fitzgerald West Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Bryce Langston[/autotag], [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag], [autotag]Tygee Hill[/autotag], [autotag]Jalen Lee[/autotag], [autotag]Preston Hickey[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Jefferson[/autotag].

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] added onto that with the addition of [autotag]Shone Washington[/autotag], a transfer from East Mississippi Community College. Who knows how many of those guys will return for next season or how many will leave? We do know that Kelly feels confident about the guys he has on his roster for next fall.

“We feel good about retention,” Kelly said, per On3. “So I think both of those things factored into where we’re at at the defensive tackle position.”

Another factor that could play into the strength of the defensive tackle position is [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] playing in the Tigers bowl game and how that could mean that he will return for his senior season at LSU. With Wingo and a 100% healthy [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag], the Tigers defensive line could make some noise next fall.

Brian Kelly likes LSU’s interior DL depth after signing JUCO prospect Shone Washington

Brian Kelly also said he likes where the team is with retention at defensive tackle as Maason Smith and Mekhi Wingo face draft choices.

LSU shored up the interior of its defensive line during early signing day on Wednesday as it inked a commitment from East Mississippi Community College’s [autotag]Shone Washington[/autotag].

A former three-star Georgia signee in 2022, Washington won a national title with the Bulldogs as a true freshman before transferring to the JUCO ranks. He’ll join an LSU defensive line in 2024 where he could be an instant impact player.

The Tigers haven’t added any transfer portal players on the defensive line, and coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said Wednesday that he feels good about the depth there with Washington and the prospect of some retentions.

“We really satisfied that piece early on before the transfer portal even got busy,” Kelly said of Washington’s addition. “So we used him as kind of the model, if somebody is at that caliber of player or better, maybe we’d be interested. And we feel good about retention. And so I think both of those things factored into where we’re at at the defensive tackle position.”

LSU is notably awaiting draft decisions from this season’s starting duo of [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] and [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag]. Regardless of what that pair ultimately decides, Washington should help LSU up front in 2024.

LSU defensive lineman enters transfer portal

A former three-star defensive lineman in the 2022 recruiting class has now entered his name into the transfer portal.

A former three-star defensive lineman in the 2022 recruiting class has now entered his name into the transfer portal.

[autotag]Tygee Hill[/autotag] is a 6-foot-3, 288-pound defensive lineman from New Orleans who committed to LSU out of Edna Karr High School in 2022. Hill appeared in nine games over two years for the Tigers and made three tackles.

The Tigers had nine defensive tackles on the roster this season and Hill was still talented enough to make an appearance in six games. He had his best game against Auburn where he made two tackles.

The Tigers have two defensive linemen commitments in the 2024 recruiting class, [autotag]Shone Washington[/autotag] and [autotag]De’Myrion Johnson[/autotag]. There are also a lot of players in the NCAA transfer portal that [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] could try to land to take the open roster spot.

FLIP ALERT: LSU lands former Texas A&M DL commit Gabriel Reliford

LSU’s 2024 recruiting class just got even better as the Tigers have added a four-star defensive lineman from Louisiana to the class.

LSU’s 2024 recruiting class just got even better as the Tigers have added a four-star defensive lineman from Louisiana to the class.

[autotag]Gabriel Reliford[/autotag] is a 6-foot-2, 255-pound defensive lineman from Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana, Reliford was previously committed to Texas A&M but he decommitted from the Aggies on Dec. 3.

It did not take him long to make his decision after that as he chose LSU only five days later.

The Tigers now have 27 commitments for the 2024 class, a class that ranks as the No. 13 class in the country by 247Sports. Reliford is the third defensive lineman commit of the class as he joins [autotag]De’Myrion Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Shone Washington[/autotag].

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is always looking to beef up the defensive line and improve the Tigers in any way possible. He has definitely done that with Reliford and there is still room for a few more commits to join.

Former Georgia football DL commits to LSU

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman commits to the LSU Tigers.

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive tackle Shone Washington left the Georgia football program in March 2023. Washington, a former three-star recruit in the class of 2022, has now committed to the LSU Tigers.

Shone Washington spent the 2023 season with East Mississippi Community College. He recorded 26 total tackles and a sack in six games this year. Washington’s hometown is New Orleans, Louisiana, so now he is coming home to LSU.

Washington played in one game during his freshman year at Georgia. He recorded one tackle against Samford. Washington originally committed to Georgia in late 2021, choosing the Bulldogs over the Florida Gators.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive lineman will provide a boost to LSU’s defensive line room. Shone Washington is rated at the No. 15 junior college recruit in the country and is considered a three-star prospect. Washington is the No. 5 junior college defensive lineman, per 247Sports.

Washington announced his commitment to LSU via social media:

NEW: LSU lands commitment from JUCO defensive line prospect

Former Georgia defensive lineman Shone Washington committed to the Tigers on Monday night.

LSU’s 2024 recruiting class got a boost in the form of a three-star junior college defensive lineman.

East Mississippi Community College prospect [autotag]Shone Washington[/autotag] committed to the Tigers on Monday night. Washington ranks as the No. 27 overall junior college player in the country on the 247Sports Composite JUCO rankings.

The New Orleans native originally signed with Georgia in the 2022 recruiting class. The three-star recruit appeared in one game that season before entering the portal and transferring to the JUCO ranks.

Now, he’s heading back to the SEC and his home state of Louisiana as he’ll look to shore up a Tigers defensive line that could lose some of its best players.

After Washington’s addition, LSU’s 26-man 2024 class ranks 14th in the nation, per the 247Sports Composite.

LSU offers JUCO defensive lineman from EMCC

LSU is working on beefing up the defensive line for next season.

LSU is working on beefing up the defensive line for next season. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has extended a scholarship offer to a defensive lineman who plays for East Mississippi Community College but he is originally from New Orleans.

[autotag]Shone Washington[/autotag] is a 6-foot-3, 297-pound defensive lineman who was ranked as a three-star recruit in high school. He committed to play for Georgia out of high school but eventually wound up going to East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Mississippi, the former home of the hit show Last Chance U.

There are no Crystal ball projections for Washington at this time and there are no favorites to land him per On3.

Billy Napier is trying to flip this Georgia DL commit

A new staff has Florida threatening to steal one of Georgia’s commits as the early signing period approaches.

Three-star defensive lineman Shone Washington was in Gainesville over the weekend on an official visit, and Florida appears to still be in play despite a commitment to Georgia in November.

Washington already had an offer from Florida when he chose UGA, but meeting Billy Napier and being offered again by the new staff has him split between the two bitter rivals, according to All Gators. With plans to announce his decision during the early signing period, Washington is leaving plenty of room for speculation.

“I’m gonna go home and think about both schools, and I’ll have my answer by Wednesday,” Washington said. “It’s a race. Right now, you know, it’s 50-50.”

Florida needs defensive tackles and the new staff has made a good impression on the 6-foot-3-inch, 297-pound lineman. Running backs coach Jabbar Juluke and Kevin Bolden helped get Washington out to Florida. Being from Lousiana, Washington immediately felt a connection with many of the new coaches, including Napier.

Flipping Washington from Georgia would be a huge win for Florida’s new coach. Several players have decommitted since he was hired and current players continue to enter the transfer portal. A win over Kirby Smart would be a breath of fresh air and begin to prove to Gators fans that Napier’s Louisiana ties will be useful in recruiting.

247Sports has Washington ranked No. 468 nationally on the Composite List and No. 65 for defensive linemen. He plans to make his decision around 1 p.m. EST on Dec. 15.
