Another injury shuffles Bears offensive line on Day 9 of training camp

Bears rookie Braxton Jones suffered a minor, undisclosed injury. See how that impacted the offensive line on Saturday:

The Chicago Bears offensive line is far from solidified at this point of training camp. The shuffling continued during Saturday’s practice, where there was an interesting injury development.

Rookie Braxton Jones, who appears to be the favorite to start at left tackle, was sidelined with an undisclosed injury. According to The Athletic, Jones spent some time talking with a trainer at practice. Head coach Matt Eberflus didn’t sound too worried and listed Jones as day today.

With Jones sidelined, there was a new name thrown into the ring at left tackle. Veteran Shon Coleman took the starting reps at left tackle in his place.

That also might’ve had something to do with the fact that veteran Riley Reiff didn’t participate in team drills, only individual drills. Assuming he participated, the expectation is he would’ve kicked back over to left tackle while Larry Borom took the reps at right tackle.

Veterans Cody Whitehair and Reiff practiced, but they sat out during team drills, which opened the door for some more shifting. Rookie Ja’Tyre Carter, who had been splitting reps with Michael Schofield at right guard, got a look at left guard in Whitehair’s place. Borom, who had been rotating with Reiff at right tackle, was back to taking all of the reps at right tackle.

Elsewhere, Sam Mustipher was back taking starting reps at center as Lucas Patrick remains sidelined indefinitely with a right hand injury. Schofield continued to take starting reps at right guard.

Former Auburn offensive lineman signs with new NFL team

Former Auburn offensive tackle Shon Coleman signed with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Chicago Bears announced via Twitter that they had signed former Auburn offensive lineman Shon Coleman. Recently, Coleman was released by the Indianapolis Colts. It didn’t take long for the Tennessee native to find himself a new home.

Out of high school, Coleman was ranked as a four-star by 247Sports’ recruiting rankings. He was also the No. 99 prospect in the class. He chose the Tigers over other programs like Miami, Alabama, and Arkansas where he took several official visits. He would go on to spend five seasons on the Plains.

Coleman overcame adversity on a number of different occasions. In 2011, he was diagnosed with leukemia. After being cleared by the doctors, he returned to the gridiron in 2012. The NCAA would grant Coleman an additional year of eligibility because of his stint with leukemia. Over the course of his five-year career, he started in 25 games for the Tigers. In 2016, the Cleveland Browns drafted Coleman with the 78th overall pick.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

He would start in 16 games for the Browns in 2017. After the season, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2018. In 2019, he would be on the injured reserve. In 2020, he opted out of playing because of COVID-19. Then, he would return to the injured reserve yet again in 2021.

Now, he hopes that his future is bright in Chicago. The Bears have been known to have a lackluster offensive line, so hopefully Coleman gets a fair opportunity to prove himself. He was a staple for Auburn back in the day and could certainly be at the professional level in the near future.

Bears sign OL Shon Coleman, waive P Ryan Winslow

The Bears have made a couple of roster moves with the start of OTAs, signing OL Shon Coleman and releasing P Ryan Winslow.

With the start of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), the Chicago Bears have made some roster moves to kick things off.

The Bears have signed offensive tackle Shon Coleman and waived punter Ryan Winslow in a corresponding roster move, the team announced on Tuesday.

Coleman, a former third-round pick in 2016, started every game at right tackle for the Cleveland Browns in 2017. He was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2018, although he didn’t played in a regular season game. Coleman missed the 2019 season due to injury and opted out in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns.

Coleman was released by the Indianapolis Colts this month, which adds another former Colt to the Bears’ roster.

There’s been a focus on the offensive line this offseason for general manager Ryan Poles, including drafting four offensive linemen on Day 3 of the NFL draft. He hasn’t made any big splashes, rather, he continues to add depth.

It seems there won’t be a punter battle in training camp as seventh-round rookie Trenton Gill is now the only punter on the roster following Winslow’s release. Gill will step into the shoes of former Bears punter Pat O’Donnell, who signed with the Green Bay Packers in free agency.

Former Auburn player released by Indianapolis colts

The lineman hasn’t played a snap in a regular-season NFL game since 2017.

A former Auburn Tiger will be looking for another chance in the NFL.

[autotag]Shon Coleman[/autotag], a former Auburn offensive lineman, was released by the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday. Coleman most recently played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2018 to 2020.

Coleman first played meaningful snaps for Auburn in 2013 after being diagnosed with leukemia out of high school and battling it in 2011 and 2012, where he was a redshirt freshman and then a freshman. He was Greg Robinson’s backup in 2013, when Auburn went the national championship against Florida State, but had his first starting year in 2014 when he was named to the All-SEC second team.

Coleman was drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. He started all 16 games in 2017, but was traded to the 49ers the year after. Due to injuries, he wasn’t able to play, and he then opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. He was cut from the team after going on injured reserve in 2021 and, most recently, signed to the Colts’ practice squad in 2022.

Coleman hasn’t played a snap of a regular-season NFL game since 2017, so it will likely be an uphill battle to land on another team before the season starts.

Colts officially sign OT Dennis Kelly among several roster moves

The Colts make the Dennis Kelly signing official, among other roster moves.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Dennis Kelly in addition to making several other roster moves, the team announced Tuesday.

The team also announced that linebacker Malik Jefferson and offensive tackle Shon Coleman were released while tight ends Farrod Green and Eli Wolf were waived from the 90-man roster.

Kelly will come in likely as a swing tackle for the Colts to provide depth on either side of the line.

With Jefferson released, it will be interesting to see how the Colts handle the backup MIKE position behind starter Bobby Okereke.

The additions of rookies Jelani Woods and Andrew Ogletree give the Colts enough depth to part ways with Green and Wolf.

All-Auburn Offensive Team during Gus Malzahn era

Taking a look at the elite of the elite for Auburn on offense during the eight years of the Gus Malzahn era on the Plains.

The Gus Malzahn era at Auburn started out with a bang on the offensive side of the ball has Nick Marshall, Tre Mason and company lit the scoreboard on fire on their way to a SEC title and spot in the BCS National Championship Game.

While the Tigers’ offense would never reach those heights again under Malzahn during his eight years in charge, there were still plenty of great offensive players to come to the Plains during that time.

But who is the top of the top and the elite of the elite? We name our All-Auburn Offensive Team from the Malzahn era along with who would serve as second string.

(Note: When it comes to offensive linemen, we did not choose someone for each position but the top five guys that made the biggest impact.)

Several ex-Browns among the 66 NFL players opting out for 2020

Only the Patriots had more players opt out than the Browns

The Cleveland Browns were one of the hardest-hit teams by players opting out for the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. Five Browns players elected to take the season off, as allowed by the agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA.

Only the New England Patriots, with eight, had more players choose to opt out. One of those eight Patriots is former Browns FB, Dan Vitale.

He’s one of several former Browns who are among the 66 total players who will not play in 2020.

FB Dan Vitale, Patriots

WR Travis Benjamin, 49ers

CB E.J. Gaines, Bills

OT Shon Coleman, 49ers

WR Da’Mari Scott, Giants

OT Brad Seaton, Buccaneers

The full opt-out list can be found here via the NFL.

Two more 49ers opt out of 2020 NFL season

The 49ers had two more players opt out of the 2020 NFL season.

49ers general manager John Lynch on Monday wasn’t anticipating any members of his team opting out of the 2020 campaign to avoid the danger of playing football during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wide receiver Travis Benjamin opted out on Wednesday, and two more players chose to sit out just inside of Thursday’s deadline.

Offensive linemen Shon Coleman and Jake Brendel both told the 49ers they’d be sitting out the 2020 season, although neither player’s opt-out officially hit the NFL’s transaction wire Thursday.

Coleman battled leukemia as an 18-year-old and presumably qualifies for as a ‘high-risk’ opt-out. He was going to be in the thick of the battle for the 49ers’ swing tackle job, which he was en route to securing a season ago before sustaining a season-ending ankle injury in the first offensive series of the preseason.

San Francisco acquired Coleman from the Browns in a trade before the 2018 season. He re-signed this offseason on a one-year deal, and should continue to be a factor on their roster next season.

Brendel was an undrafted free agent in 2016 with the Dolphins and signed with the 49ers this offseason. He was going to battle for a roster spot as a versatile offensive lineman. Brendel had three starts in 21 games from 2016-18 with Miami.

Between Coleman, Brendel and Benjamin, the 49ers didn’t lose any starters to opt-outs, but their depth did take a hit. They have a trio of available roster spots now that have not been filled.

Former Auburn offensive lineman opts out of NFL season

The former Auburn star offensive lineman beat leukemia back in 2012.

The number of players that are opting out of the 2020 NFL season is growing and now includes one former Auburn star.

Shon Coleman, who played offensive tackle at Auburn before getting selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, has decided to sit out the season.

It certainly makes sense that Coleman would make this decision considering his past. Right after committing to Auburn in February 2010, he was diagnosed with leukemia. He was forced to sit out the 2011 and 2012 season while he was recovering, finally beating it. He served as a backup to Greg Robinson on the 2013 SEC championship team.

In 2014, he became the starter and received second-team All-SEC honors. He also was named second-team All-SEC following the 2015 season and declared for the NFL Draft.

After playing two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Coleman joined the San Francisco 49ers in 2018.

Signing Jack Conklin closes a very sad Browns draft circle

Jack Conklin was drafted by the Titans in 2016 with a pick acquired from the Browns for Corey Coleman, Shon Coleman and DeShone Kizer

Jack Conklin is the new right tackle for the Cleveland Browns. Signing the former Titans standout for three years and $42 million brings Conklin to Cleveland four years later than when a Browns draft pick was used to select him in the top 10 overall.

Flashback to April of 2016…

The Browns, then led by de facto GM Sashi Brown and new head coach Hue Jackson, held the No. 8 pick in the draft. Seeking to make a bigger mark by acquiring more picks, the Browns traded away that pick to the Tennessee Titans.

Tennessee shot up from No. 15 overall to snag Conklin, a late-blooming star tackle from Michigan State who progressed from walk-on to All-American. He earned All-Pro honors as a Titans rookie.

In return for the pick that became Conklin, the Browns netted:

  • 2016 No. 15 overall, WR Corey Coleman
  • 76th overall, OL Shon Coleman
  • 2017 2nd round, QB DeShone Kizer

Browns fans know the fate of the Colemans and Kizer all too well. None were with the team beyond the 2017 season. Corey Coleman and Kizer have also been unceremoniously dumped by their next teams, too.

Signing Conklin is a fitting dose of aftershave on the harsh burn from the 2016 draft trade. It brings the No. 8 pick in the 2016 draft full circle back to Cleveland. Better late than never…
