Report: Colts to sign DT Sheldon Day

Colts are expected to sign the veteran Sheldon Day.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign defensive tackle Sheldon Day to a one-year deal, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

After adding DeForest Buckner to the interior defensive line as the starting three-technique, the Colts needed to add depth at the nose tackle position. Day provides a veteran presence there while working alongside Grover Stewart.

A fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame in the 2016 NFL draft with the Jaguars, Day has been rotational piece to the 49ers defensive line for the last two-plus seasons. He reunites with Buckner, both of which came through in the 2016 draft.

Day doesn’t offer much as a pass rusher, evident by his 6.0 sacks and 10 quarterback hits in 56 career games. However, he is a solid rotational piece to work in with Stewart, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

The Colts needed to add some depth to the one-technique defensive tackle position, especially since the only true player at that spot on the roster was Stewart.

Day presents a low-risk depth addition to help shore up some of the interior while competing with Stewart for the starting nose tackle position.
