Nick Saban did not appreciate Shane Gillis accusing him of ‘cheating’ on College GameDay

Nick Saban sternly explained that Alabama “cheated” by developing its players.

Thanks to the advent of name, image, and likeness, college athletes are now permitted to make money under NCAA rules. But even when that wasn’t the case, players getting paid was a fact of life.

While quite a few programs were caught doing exactly that, many more did so discreetly based on extensive reporting into the “bagman” phenomenon. But none of that was happening at Alabama. At least, not according to coach Nick Saban.

During College GameDay ahead of the first-round College Football Playoff matchup between Indiana and Notre Dame in South Bend, Saban did not seem to appreciate comedian and guest picker Shane Gillis jokingly accusing him of “cheating.”

“I’m joking,” Gillis said when Pat McAfee referenced his cheating comments. “Is this not a fun show? Is this a serious show? Alabama Jones is very serious. Get the whip, Indy.”

Saban clarified that he believes in integrity and that Alabama cheated by developing players.

“I do believe in integrity,” Saban said. “I always tried to run the program that way, so players had a better chance to be successful in life. We made more money in the NFL than any other school, 61 players in the league. That was how we cheated, we developed players.”

Gillis responded with a laughing apology, but the seven-time national champion may not be the comedian’s biggest fan right now.

Watch Texas A&M student hit big money field goal on ESPN’s College GameDay

Watch this Texas A&M freshman hit a field goal worth $50,000 during College GameDay!

Just hours before Texas A&M hosts the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday night, ESPN’s College Gameday descended on College Station, Texas, bringing the usual pre-game fun that offers plenty of entertainment for the earlier weekend risers who tune in.

During one of the many segments to, let’s be honest, fill time before former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and the GameDay hosts picked the games, especially Texas A&M vs. Notre Dame.

One of the show’s most popular hosts, Pat McAfee, a former Pro Bowl Punter with the Indianapolis Colts, challenged a Texas A&M freshman student to hit a 33-yard field goal worth a whopping $50,000 if he made it. After missing the first attempt, McAfee was gracious and gave the young man one last shot, which he nailed right down the middle.

Congratulations to this young man on shocking everyone, which might be a good sign for Texas A&M on Saturday night!

No. 20 Texas A&M will host No. 7 Notre Dame on Saturday, August 31, at 6:30 p.m. CT, and the game will air on ABC.

Big-time Notre Dame fan to host Saturday Night Live

Will he mention the Fighting Irish at all on SNL?

A former Saturday Night Live cast member, who was fired in 2019, is returning to host the show on February 24 of this year.  And it just so happens this comedian happens to be a big-time Notre Dame football fan.

Shane Gillis, who is in the middle of a tour that’s seemingly sold out nationwide, was set to be a cast member of SNL in 2019 but a podcast clip from over a year earlier surfaced where Gillis used slurs in describing different groups.

If you want to find out what he said then Google is readily available for you but we won’t share that or his apology here.

Instead, we’ll point out that Gillis is a big-time Notre Dame football fan.  He’s shared stories (largely inappropriate ones) about traveling to South Bend for the spring game as a teenager and also shared about being in Dublin for Notre Dame-Navy in 2023 and nearly seeing Brady Quinn get in a fight.

Those are all a simple YouTube search away for you check out.  No idea if he’ll reference Notre Dame football at all when he hosts SNL later this month but perhaps between Donald Trump impressions he’ll show a little ND love.
