Dolphins sign second-year DT to practice squad

The Dolphins filled the vacancy on their practice squad Wednesday afternoon.

The Miami Dolphins added defensive tackle Shakel Brown to their practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

Brown, 25, spent his rookie season with the Tennessee Titans in 2023 after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent. He spent the entire year on the injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury in preseason.

After he was waived by Tennessee in the offseason, Brown signed with the San Francisco 49ers and spent the first month of the regular season on the team’s practice squad. He was released by the 49ers earlier this month and hasn’t yet appeared in an NFL game.

The Dolphins had a vacancy on their practice squad after parting with second-year offensive tackle Anderson Hardy on Tuesday.

While Miami signed several defensive linemen in the 2024 offseason, that depth was whittled down in training camp and the Dolphins’ subsequently lost two defensive tackles — Jonathan Harris and Naquan Jones — from their practice squad.

That proved costly Sunday when Zach Sieler was out of action and the Dolphins elevated Neil Farrell to play against the Arizona Cardinals to underwhelming results.

Aside from Brown and Farrell, the Dolphins also have defensive lineman Matt Dickerson on their practice squad.

49ers add familiar face on defensive line to practice squad

The 49ers added a player to their practice squad as the hunt for a Javon Hargrave replacement begins.

The San Francisco 49ers filled the empty spot on their practice squad on Wednesday.

Defensive lineman Shakel Brown is returning to San Francisco to join their practice squad a day after the club released veteran safety Tracy Walker III.

Brown was with the 49ers in camp and had a nice preseason. His return gives the team additional internal depth to help replace defensive tackle Javon Hargrave who is out for the season following a partial triceps tear in Week 3.

San Francisco added Brown in the offseason and he spent time with them in training camp and the preseason. He played 72 snaps across the 49ers’ three preseason contests. Brown was let go at final cuts.

He’s also been with the Tennessee Titans and has yet to make his NFL debut.

This signing gives the 49ers a trio of interior defensive linemen on their practice squad. Brown joins veteran T.Y. McGill and undrafted rookie Evan Anderson as potential Hargrave replacements.

It’ll be interesting to see how the 49ers manage that group. They may permanently elevate a player, but they could opt to rotate through them with standard practice squad elevations to see which player fits best on the defensive front.

Figuring out how to fill the void left by Hargrave is now atop the 49ers’ to-do list on defense, and now they have another internal option.

Tennessee Titans waive DL Shakel Brown

The Titans have parted ways with DL Shakel Brown.

On the same day it was reported that the Tennessee Titans were signing wide receiver Tyler Boyd, the team made another roster move official, with Tennessee announcing it has waived defensive lineman Shakel Brown.

Brown was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Titans in 2023 but suffered an injury during the preseason game against the Chicago Bears that led to his being placed on season-ending injured reserve.

He was with the team during the early stages of the offseason program this year before being let go. We had Brown in our way-too-early 53-man roster projection, but so much for that.

The Titans made an addition to their defensive line room the day before cutting Brown, with the team re-signing Marlon Davidson, who appeared in five games (three starts) with the Titans in 2023.

That likely prompted the release of Brown, who will now head to waivers, where he hopes to be claimed by another team.

Report: Titans DL Shakel Brown feared to have suffered season-ending injury

Titans DL Shakel Brown reportedly may have suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason Week 1 loss to the Bears.

Tennessee Titans 2023 undrafted free agent signing and defensive lineman, Shakel Brown, was carted off the field during the preseason Week 1 game and the injury is reportedly thought to be serious.

According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, the early word is that Brown is “probably done for the season” with the ankle injury. The specifics of the injury remain unclear, though.

Brown was inked to a UDFA deal following the 2023 NFL draft and was battling for a roster spot at a position group that is lacking reliable depth.

The Troy product was listed in the No. 3 spot at defensive tackle on the first unofficial depth chart behind veterans Jeffery Simmons and Jaleel Johnson.

What scouting reports said about Titans UDFA DL Shakel Brown

A look at the scouting reports we could find for Titans UDFA DL Shakel Brown.

One of the 14 undrafted free agents the Tennessee Titans signed after the 2023 NFL draft, Troy defensive lineman Shakel Brown will look to make his mark and secure a spot on the roster or practice squad this offseason.

There is plenty of precedent in Tennessee for cracking the roster as an undrafted free agent along the defensive line, as guys like Teair Tart and Naquan Jones have done so in recent years, with Tart emerging as a good starter for the Titans.

In 2022, Jayden Peevy was able to stick around on the practice squad all season before eventually getting a promotion to the active roster in late December.

Will Shakel Brown be the next Tart, Jones or even Peevy? We can’t say for sure but we can get a better idea about what to expect by rounding up the scouting reports available for the Troy product, which we have done below.

Titans had pre-draft meeting with Troy DL Shakel Brown

The Titans had a pre-draft Zoom meeting with Troy DL Shakel Brown.

The Tennessee Titans held a Zoom meeting with Troy defensive tackle Shakel Brown ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

The news comes from Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston, who also reports the meeting was with the Titans’ defensive line coach, Terrell Williams.

Brown has also met with the Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. The Miami Dolphins also brought him in for a workout.

In 2022, Brown had his best season after playing in a career-high 13 games. He had 32 total tackles (six for loss), four sacks, one pass defensed and one fumble forced and recovered.

Also per Wilson, the 6-foot-4, 295-pound lineman impressed during his Pro Day last month. His 30 bench-press reps would have ranked second among defensive linemen at the NFL combine, and he posted a 4.82 40 and 4.44 short shuttle, the latter of which would’ve been tops, as well.

Assuming Teair Tart returns on his restricted free agent tender, which he has yet to sign, the Titans don’t have a big need upfront going into 2023, but with Tart and Denico Autry set to be free agents in 2024, a pick at the position is possible.

Dolphins holding private workout for Troy DT

Miami has three defensive tackles heading into the final year of their deal.

The Miami Dolphins, like the other 31 teams in the NFL, are preparing for the upcoming 2023 draft with the goal of finding players who can help them win games.

With the draft just two weeks away, the Dolphins are meeting with individual prospects, including Troy defensive tackle Shakel Brown, according to Aaron Wilson.

At 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds, Brown impressed with his athleticism at his pro day when he ran a 4.82-second 40-yard dash and 33-inch vertical leap, which would’ve been tied for second at the NFL Scouting Combine.

He played three seasons at Troy, recording 59 total tackles (eight for a loss), 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

When it comes to the Dolphins, they look great on the defensive line, as Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler and Raekwon Davis are all set to return for 2023 and play in the interior. However, all three are set to be free agents after the season, so Miami may be looking for some potential replacements after the year.

Brown could come in and learn from a great group for a year and then take on a bigger role in 2024 if someone were to leave.
