Iowa basketball provides cryptic injury update on sophomore forward Seydou Traore

Fran McCaffery provided a cryptic injury update on Iowa sophomore forward Seydou Traore.

As Iowa men’s basketball (8-3, 1-1 Big Ten) previewed its Saturday clash vs. Utah (8-2) from the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux City, S.D., the team provided an update to the injury status of sophomore forward Seydou Traore.

Traore, who has been dealing with a lingering ankle issue since the Hawkeyes‘ win over USC-Upstate on Nov. 26, could be unavailable for the tilt against the Utes as the ankle concerns appear to have risen again.

When asked about Traore’s status for the upcoming game, head coach Fran McCaffery gave a rather unsettling answer.

“I don’t know. Not too optimistic,” McCaffery replied.

Traore’s most recent game action occurred in the Hawkeyes’ Dec. 12 loss to No. 3 Iowa State, where he scored six points in 14 minutes off 2-for-4 shooting from the floor, added three rebounds and an assist.

McCaffery was then asked if Traore had suffered any sort of setback recently.

“I guess,” McCaffery responded.

In Traore’s first season with the Hawkeyes after transferring from Manhatten, he is averaging 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game in 17.2 minutes of average floor time.

In six games played, Traore is shooting 42.9% from the floor, 25% from beyond the arc, and 61.5% from the charity stripe.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the availability and extent of Traore’s injury, Iowa will have their depth tested again with Saturday’s game vs. Utah on the horizon.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. CT tipoff and will be televised on the Big Ten Network and on the Hawkeyes Radio Network.

Iowa reveals positive injury update ahead of Cy-Hawk battle

Iowa basketball appears to be returning forward Seydou Traore ahead of its Cy-Hawk Series showdown vs. Iowa State.

It looks like Iowa (7-2, 1-1 Big Ten) has some good injury news ahead of tonight’s Cy-Hawk Series battle against No. 3 Iowa State (7-1).

Neither sophomore forward Seydou Traore or freshman forward Cooper Koch were listed for Iowa as out or questionable on the mandated Big Ten availability report prior to Thursday night’s contest against the Cyclones.

Traore suffered a bad ankle sprain on Nov. 26 against USC Upstate and hasn’t played since. Meanwhile, Koch has missed each of Iowa’s past three games for undisclosed reasons.

“Yeah, it’s just a bad sprain, so you just hope it’s a week or a few extra days rather than two, two and a half weeks, three weeks. You don’t know,” Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery told the Hawkeye Radio Network of Traore’s injury following Iowa’s win over USC Upstate.

Iowa is more than two weeks beyond when Traore exited Carver-Hawkeye Arena with the ankle sprain against USC Upstate.

These would be big additions for the Hawkeyes against an Iowa State team that is thought to be one of the Big 12 and nation’s finest.

Traore is currently averaging 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 41.9% from the field and 25.0% from 3-point range.

Koch averages 4.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game on 50.0% field goal shooting and 44.4% from beyond the 3-point line.

Tipoff between Iowa and Iowa State is set for 6:30 p.m. CT from inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game will be televised on FS1.

Iowa provides injury update on Cooper Koch, Seydou Traore ahead of Northwestern date

Fran McCaffery updated the injury statuses of Cooper Koch and Seydou Traore.

Iowa (6-1) opens Big Ten play on Tuesday with a date against Northwestern (6-2) from inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Ahead of its date against the Wildcats, Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery provided injury updates on multiple Hawkeyes.

McCaffery said that Iowa sophomore forward Seydou Traore is expected to be a “game-time decision” and that Iowa will be without freshman forward Cooper Koch.

Traore exited Iowa’s 110-77 win over USC Upstate last Tuesday after just a pair of minutes with what coach McCaffery said was a bad ankle sprain.

“Yeah, it’s just a bad sprain, so you just hope it’s a week or a few extra days rather than two, two and a half weeks, three weeks. You don’t know,” McCaffery told the Hawkeye Radio Network afterwards.

Traore, a transfer from Manhattan, is averaging 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game on 41.9% field goal shooting.

According to Tyler Tachman of the Des Moines Register, McCaffery didn’t specify on the nature of Koch’s absence. Koch missed Iowa’s matchup versus USC Upstate.

The 6-foot-8, 215 pound freshman forward has appeared in six games this season and is shooting 50.0% from the field and 44.4% from 3-point range. Koch is averaging 4.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

McCaffery also said that senior forward Even Brauns will “be fine.” The reserve big also missed Iowa’s date against USC Upstate.

In a positive update, senior forward Payton Sandfort said he is feeling 100% again. Sandfort had been dealing with a wrist injury since Iowa’s 76-66 win over Washington State on Nov. 15.

“I feel comfortable now. I kinda have all my tools back. So I’m good to go,” Sandfort told reporters on Monday.

Iowa tips off against Northwestern at 6 p.m. CT with the game set to stream on Peacock.

Fran McCaffery updates key reserve’s injury status

Fran McCaffery provided an injury update on Seydou Traore.

The Iowa Hawkeyes improved to 6-1 with a dominant 110-77 win over USC Upstate on Tuesday night from inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Just about everything was working for Iowa as the Hawkeyes rolled up the Spartans to the tune of 60.6% shooting and 46.2% 3-point marksmanship. Iowa racked up 26 fastbreak points, scored 31 points off turnovers and notched 50 points in the paint.

Sophomore guard Brock Harding registered another career-high scoring output with 20 points to lead the Hawkeyes.

The only real downside of the night was seeing sophomore forward Seydou Traore exit early in the first half with a lower right leg injury. The Manhattan transfer got tangled up underneath the Hawkeyes’ basket and left the court unable to put weight down on his right side.

That had some fans fearing the worst, but Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery provided what will be seen as a positive injury update afterwards. Per McCaffery, Traore suffered a “bad sprain” of his right ankle.

“Yeah, it’s just a bad sprain, so you just hope it’s a week or a few extra days rather than two, two and a half weeks, three weeks. You don’t know,” McCaffery told the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Traore is averaging 6.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game on 41.9% field goal shooting. The 6-foot-7 forward from New York, N.Y., is shooting 25.0% from 3-point distance.

Traore’s athleticism has been a boost on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, so a quick and healthy return would be ideal as Big Ten play arrives.

Iowa returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 3 from inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena when it hosts Northwestern at 6 p.m. CT on Peacock. After its date against Northwestern, Iowa plays Michigan on Dec. 7 and No. 5 Iowa State on Dec. 12.

Three stars in Iowa basketball’s win vs. South Dakota

As Iowa readies for Washington State on Friday, a look back at three stars from Tuesday night’s 96-77 win vs. South Dakota.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (3-0) earned another dominant win against the South Dakota Coyotes by a score of 96-77 on Tuesday night from Carver-Hawkeye Arena thanks to contributions from up and down the lineup.

While the Coyotes kept the game close by only trailing 42-36 at halftime, the Hawkeyes were able to slam the door shut in the second half to improve to 3-0 on the campaign.

As a team, Iowa shot 37-for-68 (54.4%) from the field, 13-for-31 (41.9%) from 3-point range, and 9-for-12 (75%) from the free throw line.

The impressive shooting performance from the Hawkeyes has been a trend over the first three games and one that head coach Fran McCaffery would certainly like to continue.

Even with an all-around team effort, three Hawkeyes stood out to help guide Iowa to victory.

Josh Dix

Dix powered the Hawkeyes’ offensive attack by contributing 23 points, five assists, four rebounds, and one steal in 27 minutes played. He had an impressive shooting performance of 8-for-10 from the field, including 5-for-6 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Dix’s outstanding mid-range jumper and confident 3-point shot shined for Iowa Tuesday night, especially in the second half as the Hawkeyes pulled away from the Coyotes.

Ladji Dembele

Dembele had a career-high in both points and rebounds versus South Dakota, finishing with 11 points on a 5-for-8 shooting night and eight total rebounds in 22 minutes.

The sophomore forward showed off a confident mid-range jump shot that the Hawkeyes will look to utilize moving forward, especially as the scheduled competition gets more challenging.

Seydou Traore

Julia Hansen/Iowa City Press-Citizen / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Traore made his season and Hawkeye debut on Tuesday night, posting 12 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and an assist in 22 minutes. He shot 5-for-9 from the field, which included 2-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Traore, originally scheduled to receive minutes off the bench, was thrust into the starting lineup when forward Owen Freeman missed with an illness. Although he served as a fill-in for Freeman, Traore delivered a much-needed sense of athleticism to the Hawkeyes game.

One of his many highlights from Tuesday night’s win over South Dakota was an emphatic alley-oop slam off a beautiful Brock Harding pass with about 14:29 left in the second half that expanded a growing Hawkeyes lead to 61-43.

While Traore didn’t have one of the most impressive stat lines of the evening, he is a perfect fit for what the Hawkeyes want to run on both ends of the floor and has a very high ceiling moving forward.

Iowa’s next game will be against Washington State (3-0) as part of the John Deere Quad Cities Hoops Showdown from Moline, Ill., inside Vibrant Arena at the Mark.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network as well as the Hawkeyes Radio Network.

Iowa basketball forward sidelined ahead of season opener

Iowa forward Seydou Traore appears to be sidelined ahead of the Hawkeyes’ season opener.

As Iowa men’s basketball gets ready to tip off their 2024-25 campaign tonight, they will do so without forward Seydou Traore, who appeared in a walking boot and was not warming up.

Traore joined the Hawkeyes this offseason through the transfer portal from Manhattan after playing one season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

In his lone season with the Jaspers, Traore averaged 11.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in 32.4 minutes per game to go along with 62 assists and 34 blocks. He also shot 43.3% from the field and 80% from the free throw stripe.

During Iowa’s annual media day in October, Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery broke down what Traore, Ladji Dembele and Cooper Koch will provide for the Hawkeyes at the four spot.

“Well, all the guys that are competing for playing time there, they’re all really good, and they’re all different. Ladji, Cooper, Seydou. But, again, all three of them, they’re not four men. They can play the four spot. They can play the three spot. They can play the five spot.

“Ladji maybe more four, five. Coop and Seydou, maybe three, four. I would be comfortable playing Seydou in the back court. Same thing with Coop. Somebody is going to start there, but there are going to be a lot of different guys there,” McCaffery said of the Hawkeyes’ versatility at the four spot.

With Iowa facing off against a weaker opponent, the injury should not be a major factor in the outcome, but it is certainly something to keep an eye on moving forward.

The Hawkeyes’ season and home opener tonight against Texas A&M-Commerce from Carver-Hawkeye Arena is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT and will air on BTN+.

Iowa basketball adds Manhattan transfer Seydou Traore

Seydou Traore is a Hawkeye.

The Iowa Hawkeyes added another piece to their 2024-25 men’s college basketball roster on Wednesday.

Manhattan Jaspers transfer guard and forward Seydou Traore announced his commitment to Iowa.

A native of New York, N.Y., Traore averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 43.3% from the field, 25.6% from 3-point range and 80.0% from the charity stripe.

The 6-foot-7, 215 pound swingman just completed his freshman season where he scored in double figures in 18 contests. That included 16 points and eight rebounds in a game at Kansas on Nov. 10, 2023.

Traore also registered 10 games with double-figure rebounds, including four contests where he pulled down a dozen or more boards.

Traore tallied six double-doubles during the 2023-24 men’s college basketball season and was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s All-Rookie Team.

“It was truly a blessing being named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team. Before the season, I set a goal for myself, and I just worked in the offseason. Even though I fell short on one of my goals to win Rookie of the Year, it was one of the best seasons I’ve ever been a part of. I give all my success to God and the coaching staff believed in me to play with a tremendous amount of confidence,” Traore said after the season with Manhattan.

Traore joins a core at Iowa that features sophomore forwards Owen Freeman, Ladji Dembele and Pryce Sandfort, sophomore guard Brock Harding and junior guard Josh Dix.

Iowa is awaiting a stay-or-go decision from forward Payton Sandfort who is going through the NBA draft process but has maintained his collegiate eligibility so far. Sandfort averaged 16.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season while shooting 44.6% from the field and 37.9% from 3-point distance.

Iowa also added former Morehead State guard Drew Thelwell out of the transfer portal this offseason.

The 6-foot-3, 195 pound guard played and started in all 68 games for the Eagles over the past two seasons. In his career, Thelwell has appeared in 114 games and started 69.

This past season, Thelwell averaged 10.0 points, 6.2 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. The Orlando product shot 43.5% from the floor and 33.8% from 3-point range. Thelwell netted 64.5% of his free throw tries.

Short-lived Buff Seydou Traore lands at SEC school

ICYMI: Short-lived Buff Seydou Traore committed to an SEC school

For whatever reason, things didn’t work out between Seydou Traore and the University of Colorado football program. The former Arkansas State tight end joined the Buffs in December but then re-entered the transfer portal on April 30 just days after spring practices concluded.

Now, according to a Saturday report from 247Sports, Traore is committed to the SEC’s Mississippi State Bulldogs. At the time of his pledge, he was considered the top available player in the transfer portal.

Before coming to Boulder, the short-lived Buff recorded 655 receiving yards and four touchdowns with the Red Wolves in 2022, earning first-team All-Sun Belt honors. He was largely expected to be Colorado’s starting TE in 2023.

The Buffs and head coach Deion Sanders have yet to add another TE from the portal, giving likely either Louis Passarello, Caleb Fauria or Elijah Yelverton an opportunity to start.

Oregon extends offer to former Colorado Buffaloes tight end

TE Seydou Traore transferred to Colorado last December. He’s now leaving Deion Sanders’ program, and the Ducks are interested.

It may have seemed like the Oregon Ducks might be out of the tight-end transfer portal market after picking up former Ole Miss TE Casey Kelly a week or so ago, but that’s apparently not the case.

On Friday night, former Colorado Buffaloes tight end Seydou Traore announced on Twitter that he received an offer from the Ducks, one of the many that he’s gotten since entering the transfer portal.

The Ducks initially added Kelly to the roster after starting TE Terrance Ferguson went down for the spring with an apparent shoulder injury.

Seydou has spent a lot of time in the portal before. He initially signed with the Arkansas State Red Wolves as a member of the 2021 recruiting class but transferred to Colorado back in December of 2022 after Deion Sanders took over. As part of the mass exodus that has taken place in Boulder over the past month, Traore is once again searching for a new team to play for.

In two seasons at Arkansas State, Traore played in 16 games, catching 61 passes for 734 yards and 4 touchdowns.

At the moment, the Ducks currently have three scholarships available to use this offseason, and they have a number of offers out to players on the open market.

Seydou Traore’s Transfer Portal Profile

Colorado football transfer profile: Five things to know about Seydou Traore

New #cubuffs tight end Seydou Traore has quite the background. Get to know him:

With Deion Sanders reshaping the Colorado Buffaloes football program, there are plenty of new faces in Boulder. One of them is tight end Seydou Traore, who transferred to Colorado from Arkansas State and has been fun to watch so far.

Traore has been pegged as an under-the-radar portal addition, and he should be able to make a name for himself with Brady Russell leaving the program and headed for the USFL.

There is a lot to like about Traore, and the junior is a four-star transfer and earned first-team All-Sun Belt during his time at Arkansas State.

Here are five things to know about Traore:
