Every Round 7 draft pick the Saints have chosen since 2002

NFL draft: Every New Orleans Saints seventh-round pick since 2002, highlighted by Zach Strief and Marques Colston in 2006

The seventh and final round of the annual NFL draft has brought mixed results to the New Orleans Saints — they hit home runs on both of their seventh-round picks back in 2006, giving fans hope that every subsequent seventh rounder could be the next Zach Strief or Marques Colston. But more often than not these late-round fliers haven’t panned out. The drop in prospect quality from earlier in the draft is often just too tough to overcome.

Still, with the Saints picking twice in the seventh round this year, it’s worth looking back on past results to set a realistic expectation for the upcoming rookies. Here’s the Saints draft history in Round 7 and every other phase of the draft under longtime general manager Mickey Loomis:

Packers select Nebraska WR Samori Toure at No. 258 overall in 2022 NFL draft

The Green Bay Packers selected Nebraska wide receiver Samori Toure at No. 258 overall in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft.

The Packers had Toure in for a pre-draft visit.

Toure, a Montana transfer, caught 46 passes for 898 yards and five touchdowns for Nebraska during the 2021 season. He led the Big Ten in yards per catch (19.5) and had five 100-yard receiving games.

Prior to his transfer, Toure produced 87 catches for 1,495 yards and 13 touchdowns during an All-American season at Montana in 2019.

Toure turned 24 in March.

While not invited to the combine, Toure enjoyed an impressive pro day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds, hit 34.5″ in the vertical leap, covered 10-4 in the broad jump, and completed the short shuttle in 4.22 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.77 seconds. His Relative Athletic Score is 6.15 out of 10.0.

Toure joins second-round pick Christian Watson and fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs as the three wide receivers picked by the Packers in the 2022 draft.

In Walker, the Packers are getting more depth for the offensive line room. He represents the team’s third pick along the offensive line, joining third-round pick Sean Rhyan and fourth-round pick Zach Tom.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic pegged Walker as the 10th best offensive tackle prospect in the class and a likely third- or fourth-round pick. The Packers got him deep into the seventh round.

Chris Carson on re-signing with Seattle: ‘It was just the right feel’

Seattle Seahawks veteran running back Chris Carson reflected on his decision to re-sign with the team in free agency for 2021 and 2022.

After re-signing with the Seattle Seahawks, running back Chris Carson reflected on his decision to continue to play for the team that selected him in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Carson said he had competing offers from several teams that made him consider leaving in free agency, but that staying in Seattle just felt right for him and his family.

“It was the team that gave my first shot in the league, so I felt like it was the right decision,” Carson told reporters via Zoom on Thursday. “… It was definitely difficult, the whole process. Teams made offers, there were definitely some teams that made it tough to sign with the Seahawks, but it was just the right feel. I prayed about it, me and my family talked about it, and we knew Seattle was the right fit.”

Carson also said Russell Wilson played a vital part in him sticking around for at least a few more years.

“He was definitely in my ear,” Carson said of the Seahawks’ longtime signal-caller. “We talked about it before the season ended that we didn’t want this to be the last year we played with each other. He definitely was in my ear during the offseason.”

Entering his fifth year in the NFL, Carson professed that he is grateful that he made it as far as he did as an overlooked seventh-round pick, and that he has obtained some financial security.

“That’s a blessing,” he said. “It’s just part of my story. For me, it’s something I can always be proud of. I’m not supposed to be here. The odds are that a seventh rounder doesn’t get to free agency like that, so it was it was a blessing… I’m just glad that I can be able to make some money playing the game I love.”

Carson will undoubtedly be a key cog in Seattle’s offense once again as the team hopes to get over the hump in 2021.

The Seattle Seahawks moved back into the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft just in time to select LSU tight end Stephen Sullivan with the No. 251 overall pick. Seattle traded a 2021 sixth-round choice to Miami for the spot.

The Seahawks have Sullivan listed as a wide receiver.

2020 NFL Draft: Cowboys take 7th-round flyer on little known, championship game QB

QB Ben DiNucci wraps up the Cowboys 2020 draft class, selected out of James Madison University.

Wrapping up their 2020 draft class, the Cowboys selected James Madison QB Ben DiNucci in Round 7, No. 231 overall. Seemingly plucked from obscurity, DiNucci caps off a truly stunning first draft for Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys, and represents one last lotto ticket the team can hold onto.

A redshirt FCS senior, DiNucci transferred to James Madison from Pittsburgh in 2018. In two seasons, DiNucci threw for 5,716 yards and 45 touchdowns, finishing fourth all-time at JMU in each category. In 2019, he scored 36 total touchdowns (29 passing, seven rushing) and accounted for over 4,000 total yards of offense.

DiNucci led JMU to the FCS Championship Game last year, where they fell 28-20 to Division I powerhouse North Dakota State. In the game, he completed 22 of 33 passes for 204 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. But DiNucci’s performance and unlikely journey definitely caught the attention of NFL scouts, and especially intrigued Dallas.

With only Cooper Rush and Clayton Thorson as QB depth behind Dak Prescott, DiNucci has chance to latch on and develop as an NFL prospect under the watchful eye of McCarthy and his staff.

After seemingly crushing each pick before, having DiNucci hit would be the feather in the cap of a masterful 2020 NFL draft the Cowboys. With spirits high, we’ll let this questionable old tweet from DiNucci slide, and let him carve his own path in Dallas.

Chiefs trade up into seventh round, select Tulane CB Thakarius ‘Bopete’ Keyes

We have a trade!

The Kansas City Chiefs weren’t finished, they’ve traded back into the seventh round with the Tennessee Titans. To trade up the Chiefs surrendered a 2021 sixth-round draft pick.

With the 237th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected Tulane CB Thakarius ‘Bopete’ Keyes.

In the past two seasons at Tulane, over the course of 24 games, Keyes notched 85 tackles, 18 passes defended and two interceptions.

Here is what NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein had to say about him:

“Tall cornerback with good competitive streak who uses rare arm length to his advantage in press and catch disruption. He has adequate instincts and anticipation, but lacks functional makeup speed to cover-up for missteps in coverage. Keyes tends to play too free and easy with his footwork in space. He will need better discipline and bend to improve his balance and transition quickness. Scouts are very concerned about his long speed, but zone-heavy teams may view his length and ball skills as moldable traits to work with on the practice squad.”
