Georgia vs. Seton Hall basketball: TV, preview and prediction

Georgia basketball plays Seton Hall in the NIT semifinals on Tuesday

The Georgia Bulldogs (20-16, 6-12) basketball team plays Seton Hall in the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament. Georgia faces a big test from a No. 1 seed, the Seton Hall Pirates (23-12, 13-7).

Seton Hall finished the regular season as the fourth-best team in the Big East. The Pirates are coming off a dominant 91-68 win at home over UNLV.

The NIT semifinal will be played on Tuesday, April 2 at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Georgia-Seton Hall game will be televised on ESPN2. The contest will be played at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is a neutral site. The Georgia-Seton Hall winner will face the Indiana State-Utah winner for the NIT championship.

Head coach Mike White and the Bulldogs won last week at Ohio State in their second straight NIT road victory. Georgia opened the NIT against one of Seton Hall’s Big East rivals in Xavier.

Georgia’s leading scorer is guard Noah Thomasson, who averages 13.1 points per game. Jabri Abdur-Rahim, one of Georgia’s top players, missed the Ohio State game with an ankle injury and is likely out against Seton Hall.

[lawrence-related id=100043]

Guard Kadary Richmond is Seton Hall’s leading scorer at 15.6 points per game. ESPN gives Georgia a 44% chance to defeat Seton Hall.

Prediction: Georgia 76, Seton Hall 74

At this point, we are buying into Georgia’s NIT tournament run. The Bulldogs defeated two Power Five teams on the road in back-to-back games and should have what it takes to beat the Pirates.

March Madness: NCAA basketball committee chair says Rutgers basketball is part of the reason why Seton Hall didn’t make the NCAA Tournament

Rutgers basketball played a major spoiler in Seton Hall’s season, it turns out.

Rutgers basketball played a major role in ruining Seton Hall’s NCAA Tournament resume. So says Charles McClelland in explaining why Seton Hall won’t be in March Madness this year despite a pretty solid season.

McClelland, who serves as the chair of the Division I basketball committee, believes that Seton Hall’s loss in December to Rutgers held back the Big East program from being an NCAA Tournament team.

Seton Hall took a record of 20-12 (13-7 Big East) into ‘Selection Sunday.’ They were fourth in the conference. The Big East only had three representatives selected for this year’s NCAA Tournament, a major shock given the strength at the top of the conference.

And given their Quad 1 and Quad 2 record, Seton Hall has a very convincing argument to be in the NCAA Tournament. Instead, they will play in the NIT.

In mid-December, Rutgers played arguably their most complete game of the season up to that point in a 70-63 win at Seton Hall. In that game, Rutgers was without influential guard Jeremiah Williams and yet still managed to beat a strong Seton Hall team.

Williams scored 12.2 points per game and shot 44.4 percent from the floor this past season for Rutgers.

McClelland cites that loss as part of the committee’s reasoning in leaving Seton Hall out of the NCAA Tournament this year:

The committee drew heavy criticism for not including Indiana State, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and St. John’s among other programs. The criticism for Seton Hall’s exclusion was also noticeable but not as loud as with some of the aforementioned programs.

Their Net Ranking (67) likely played a role in this lack of criticism.

[lawrence-related id=36547,36382]

McClelland is a neat part of history. The commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, McClelland is the first to ever hold his role as chair of the basketball committee “and to be from a historically Black college, university or league.”

Jahseem Felton talks Big East commitment, why Seton Hall was the right pick

Seton Hall landed a bigtime piece in their 2024 recruiting class.

A recent official visit to Seton Hall was enough for three-star guard Jahseem Felton to commit to the Big East program.

Felton is a class of 2024 guard at the Combine Academy (Rock Hill, South Carolina). He is a consensus three-star recruit and is ranked the No. 120 recruit in the nation by On3.

He also held offers from North Carolina State, Missouri and Cincinnati among others.

In mid-October, he took an official visit to Seton Hall. That visit was transformational in his recruitment.

“It impacts it a lot, seeing the environment, the coaching staff, facilities, the campus – really helped in the decision,” Felton told USA TODAY High School Sports.

He is a 6-foot-5 guard with good length. Felton has the ability to stretch the court and is a very good perimeter defender.

With his verbal, Felton is now the first commitment for Seton Hall in their 2024 recruiting class.

“I picked Seton Hall because of the style of play and their culture is right for me,” Felton said.

“It felt right once I stepped on campus. The coaching staff, the team, even the students walking – (it) was good. Felt like home.

“And the coaches were very honest with me like I was one of their own.”

Iowa Hawkeyes ranked No. 21 in 247Sports’ preseason college basketball rankings

It’s almost time to tip off the 2022-23 men’s college basketball season. According to 247Sports, Iowa starts as the nation’s No. 21 team.

You can tell a season is right around the corner when the market becomes flooded with preseason rankings. Everyone loves a good set of rankings, especially as they try to get a gauge on teams before they step on the court. Nothing boosts your self worth quite like correctly predicting who the top teams will be in advance!

247Sports’ Kevin Flaherty and Isaac Trotter recently took their hand at predicting the field, releasing their college basketball preseason rankings. Coming in as the 21st ranked team in the country is the reigning Big Ten Tournament champion in Iowa.

This could be one of Fran McCaffery’s better defensive teams, and if Kris Murray makes the expected leap to All-Big Ten caliber player, the scoring will be there as well. Patrick McCaffery, Tony Perkins and Payton Sandfort can all put the ball in the basket. – 247Sports.

Iowa is one of only three Big Ten schools featured on the list, Illinois ranked 15th with Indiana a place behind.

The Associated Press also only ranked three Big Ten teams in their initial top 25, notably leaving Iowa on the outside looking in. According to the AP voters, Indiana is the highest-ranked Big Ten team at No. 13, followed by No. 22 Michigan and No. 23 Illinois.

It will once again be a tough competition for the conference crown, but it seems the national media is not expecting a national champion to come from the Big Ten this season.

There is a lot of projection in regards to Iowa this upcoming season, making it understandable why they are a bubble top-25 team heading into the season. Of course, the notable departure is All-American forward Keegan Murray. The fourth overall pick by the Sacramento Kings, Murray would’ve been a National Player of the Year most other seasons.

A lot of pundits are projecting twin brother Kris Murray to fill his brother’s shoes as the star of the team, but, of course, that is still just a projection for now. Murray is following a similar career arc to his brother Keegan, performing really well when given a chance at extended playing time last season. We will have to see if he can handle the limelight as the true No. 1 option for Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery.

The other biggest projection, as Kevin Flaherty breaks down for Hawkeye Insider and 247Sports, is the team’s defense.

Fran McCaffery’s bunch lost All-American Keegan Murray, who likely would have been National Player of the Year in a number of other seasons. But he brings back an experienced roster from a team that appeared to figure things out defensively as the season went on, something that could make this 2022-23 bunch better than its predecessors.

Iowa has not had a top 70 defense in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency since the 2015-16 season, and if the Hawkeyes can find a way to keep the offensive train rolling while buffing up on the defensive end, Iowa could compete for a Big Ten title. Iowa certainly appears to boast plenty of firepower. – Flaherty, 247Sports.

That progression on the defensive side of the court is probably the biggest key for Iowa in 2022. While the team loses Keegan Murray, they still return a lot of experienced players who can put the ball in the hoop. Fourth-year forward Patrick McCaffery averaged a hair over 10 points per game last year, and is getting some breakout buzz in his own right ahead of the season.

Payton Sandfort showed a lot of scoring potential off the bench last year, especially as a shooter hitting 36% of his 3-point attempts. You can go down the roster list and find potential breakout candidates: Kris Murray, Patrick McCaffery, Dasonte Bowen, etcetera.

There are a lot of things to be excited about with this team, but a ton to prove as well. They’ll have plenty of opportunities to show why they’re a top team right away, with Seton Hall, Clemson, and Duke scheduled early in the season.

Seton Hall vs UConn Game Preview

Why Seton Hall Will Win

There’s no shame in losing on the road to Villanova.

Seton Hall was playing well before the loss a few days ago, but even in defeat the threes were falling.

Hitting from the outside has been good, but to beat UConn the rebounding has to be there. The Pirates have been great on the offensive boards for the last few weeks, and it’s got the toughness on the defensive end to hold its own against the Huskies on the glass.

However, even though Seton Hall got rolled in the first meeting in rebounding margin, it still managed to win because it got to the free throw line over and over and over again.

UConn commits a whole lot of fouls, but …

Why UConn Will Win

UConn is at home.

There’s a problem when this team travels, but it’s 10-2 at home with both losses in low scoring fights when the offense wasn’t working.

Seton Hall might not be run ‘n’ stun with its offense, but the defense isn’t strong enough overall to keep this from being played in the 50s.

There aren’t enough assists and it usually takes a whole lot of ball movement to get around the UConn defense that’s strong on the inside.

And again, Seton Hall won the first time around when it wasn’t great on the boards, but it’s not going to get away with that again.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

The 90-87 overtime win at Seton Hall was a blast back in early January. This won’t be that, but it should be an entertaining back-and-forth fight.

UConn almost always wins when it hits at least 42% from the field, with the loss to Seton Hall one of the only two defeats in 16 games when it gets there.

It’ll get there from the field, and it’ll overcome a big day from the Pirates on the line to get by.

Villanova vs Seton Hall Game Preview

Why Seton Hall Will Win

The Pirates can rebound and will keep rebounding.

They lost to Villanova 73-67 the first time around when it didn’t rebound and gave up 41 – that’s not normally what they do.

They’re shooting okay lately, but they’re on a three-game wining streak because they’ve been great on the glass and they’re making lots and lots of free throws.

To beat Villanova you have to keep it rom getting to the free throw line – fouls aren’t usually a big problem for the Pirates. You have to keep it from getting a whole slew of open shots, and lately the defense has been great at slowing down the three. And …

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova has been smoking from the field over the last few games, and goodnight if it gets to the line on a regular basis.

The Wildcats are No. 1 in the nation in free throw shooting percentage hitting 83% of their tries and they’re deadly when they make 42% from the field.

The threes are nice – of course Villanova is better when the outside shots are dropping – but again, all it takes is 42% going 15-1 with that one loss to Purdue back before Thanksgiving. However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Seton Hall has been fine against hot shooting teams, at least overall from the field. It’s problem is when teams hit the three.

Villanova can do both.

Seton Hall has a good enough defense and is good enough on the glass to keep this from being a runaway home win for the Wildcats, but it’s not shooting well enough overall against the okay defenses to pull this off.

Xavier vs Seton Hall Game Preview

Why Xavier Will Win

Really, Xavier? DePaul? At home?

The Musketeers came up with a dud against the Blue Demons on Saturday in a 69-65 loss, but if they can get the scoring game going for a big spurt at some point – and if they can be better on the line – that might be enough.

The Pirates don’t move the ball around well and don’t take or more enough threes. They’re more efficient than anything else, and that should fit the Xavier style just fine.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Seton Hall Will Win

Seton Hall is better on the free throw line.

Xavier just isn’t shooting well enough. Outside of a hot performance against Creighton, it’s been struggling way too much from three, it’s not hitting enough free throws – only making 70% once in the last seven games – and it hit a scoring wall lately.

Marquette vs Seton Hall Game Preview

Why Marquette Will Win

Who’s playing better than Marquette?

On a six game winning streak after a rough start, they’re bombing away from three, they’re moving the ball around as well as anyone in the Big East, and they’re getting enough defensive stops to overcome the lack of a consistent inside presence.

Yeah, the offense stalled a bit in the second half of the 73-72 win over Seton Hall a few weeks ago, but the defense made up with it by forcing a slew of turnovers and the free throws were there in the clutch.

However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Seton Hall Will Win

Marquette got destroyed on the boards and caught a bit of a break late to pull off the win.

Seton Hall doesn’t have Marquette’s firepower and it doesn’t move the ball around nearly as well, but it rebounds everything despite missing a whole ton of size across the board.

The Pirates have to keep getting to the line and offset Marquette’s threes with lots and lots of free throws. Marquette might hit its free throws, but it doesn’t get enough chances – Seton Hall will have at least ten more attempts.

What’s Going To Happen

Marquette isn’t going to be dead-cold for a long stretch like it was in the first meeting.

This might not have the drama or the excitement of the last meeting, but Shaka Smart’s team will have to hold on late – and hit a big three – to push on by and make it four losses in the last five games for the Pirates.

Oregon vs. Seton Hall

Out West there are just two teams left fighting for a spot in the Final Four. The Pac-12’s Oregon who is a four seed and Seton Hall from the Big East is a three seed.

If the Ducks win it will be the second time that Dana Altman led Oregon to the Final Four and the first time in four years. As for Seton Hall, if they win it will be the Pirates first Final Four since they made it to the national title 1989.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

Final Score: No. 4 Oregon, 84, No. 3 Seton Hall 72

Oregon returns to its first Final Four in four years after topping Seton Hall and it was a strong second half that saw the Ducks score 51 in the second half. The 23-4 run is how Oregon pulled away for the win and while the Pirates made a late surgery they were not able to make it close after that run.

Leading the way for Oregon was the trio of Payton Pritchard, Chris Duarte, and Anthony Mathis who combined for 54 points.
