Report: Packers to sign veteran WR Seth Roberts

The Packers are expected to sign veteran WR Seth Roberts, according to ESPN.

The Green Bay Packers will soon add an experienced wide receiver.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers are planning to sign Seth Roberts to the team’s practice squad.

Roberts, who has played in 85 career games, was released by the Carolina Panthers on Monday. He signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the Panthers before the season but caught just four passes for 31 yards over Carolina’s first seven games.

Roberts played 44 snaps over the last three games with the Panthers but didn’t have a target or catch. Of the 191 wide receivers with at least one target this season, Roberts ranks 169th in yards per route run (0.53; 31 yards, 58 routes), per Pro Football Focus.

Last season, Roberts caught 21 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns over 16 games and 552 snaps with the Baltimore Ravens.

Before joining Baltimore, Roberts – an undrafted free agent from West Alabama – played five seasons with the Raiders, catching 158 passes for 1,826 yards and 13 touchdowns.

For his career, Roberts has averaged 11.6 yards per catch, while catching 60.7 percent of his targets and averaging 7.0 yards per target.

The Packers might have preferred signing an available veteran like Roberts over trading for a receiver before next week’s deadline. While Roberts is expected to begin on the Packers’ practice squad, he’ll have a chance to make the 53-man roster and contribute if he can learn the playbook and get comfortable in the Packers offense.

Roberts is most experienced playing from the slot. The Packers don’t have a traditional slot receiver on the roster.

At Pro Football Focus, Roberts earned an overall grade of 53.4 in 2020. He has never produced an overall grade above 63.5 in a single season.

Panthers release WR Seth Roberts from active roster, CB from practice squad

Roberts caught four passes in Carolina, totaling 31 yards.

The Carolina Panthers made several good pickups at the wide receiver position this offseason. At least one was a total dud, though. The team just announced that they have released Seth Roberts, who signed a one-year, $3.1 million deal in March.

Roberts never really got involved offensively and there were reports that the Panthers were having discussions about trading him even before the season began. Roberts caught four passes in Carolina, totaling 31 yards. He was only on the field for 101 total snaps. Releasing Roberts should give at least a little more room for guys like Pharoh Cooper to get involved offensively.

The Panthers also released cornerback Josh Hawkins from their practice squad. Hawkins had previously played for Carolina during the 2018 season.

Report: Panthers WR Seth Roberts comes up in trade talks

Report: Carolina Panthers WR Seth Roberts comes up in trade talks

There will be a lot of player movement today around the NFL as teams trim their rosters down to 53 and try to fill their holes before the 2020 season begins next week.

According to a report by Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, Panthers wide receiver Seth Roberts is one of the players who has been brought up in trade talks.

Roberts signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the Panthers in March.

Carolina overpaid for Roberts and would likely have to eat part if that salary in any trade. It’s unlikely he would have a big impact on offense in any case and they have plenty of depth at receiver to afford losing him.

The Athletic reported recently that the team is calling about secondary help, so Roberts might be a piece in those discussions. The Panthers could also use some help at tight end, especially if the toe injury to Ian Thomas is worse than they are letting on.

Panthers injury updates: Eli Apple, Shaq Thompson, Marquis Haynes sit out

Three players were wearing red no-contact jerseys today.

The Panthers returned to practice today after a scheduled day-off Thursday following a Wednesday night “Fanfest” session at Bank of America Stadium. Here are a few injury updates from the media.

Three players were wearing red no-contact jerseys today: linebacker Shaq Thompson, cornerback Eli Apple and defensive end Marquis Haynes.

Apple has a tight hamstring, while Thompson has had a tight groin lately – although he has previously said he’s back to 100% so it’s possible that he suffered a setback. Finally, Haynes is in the concussion protocol. Another player is coming out of it, though.

Wide receiver Seth Roberts has missed the last several practices following a head injury. Today he was back in a white jersey, indicating that he’s been cleared.

In related news, receiver/kick returner Tommylee Lewis was also back in action after missing the last few days.

If coach Matt Rhule shares more info after practice we will post an update.

Panthers injury updates: Another wide receiver out at practice

Another one.

Another one.

The Carolina Panthers came into 2020 training camp with one of the deepest, most talented wide receiver groups in the NFL. While that’s still true, the unit has been bitten hard by the injury bug. Today, another receiver did not participate in practice.

This time it’s former Saints wideout/returner Tommylee Lewis, who signed with the Panthers nine days ago. According to the Charlotte Observer, Lewis is wearing a red jersey today. Meanwhile, Omar Bayless (knee), Keith Kirkwood (shoulder) and Seth Roberts (concussion) all remain out.

Not great, Bob.

Lewis won’t be a critical part of the offense no matter what happens these next few weeks, but every rep is critical given how short this offseason has turned out to be.

On the bright side, if there’s one position group that can take a hit, it’s this one. D.J. Moore is still healthy, Robby Anderson has been flashing during team drills and their depth has been on display with even Brandon Zylstra getting some headlines lately.

Help is also on the way. Over the weekend, the Panthers tried out former XFL standout Cam Phillips and three other receivers.

Several other players also sat out today’s practice, including Tahir Whitehead, Marquis Haynes, Tyler Larsen (again) and Kenny Robinson.

Panthers injury updates: LB Shaq Thompson, WR Seth Roberts

The Carolina Panthers had a few players who did not participate during today’s practice at training camp.

The Carolina Panthers had a few players who did not participate during today’s practice at training camp.

Wide receiver Seth Roberts remains in the concussion protocol, undrafted rookie Omar Bayless is still out with his swollen knee which will require surgery and offensive lineman Tyler Larsen was also in a red jersey.

With injuries piling up at wide receiver, the team brought in a few free agents to tryout yesterday. That included four wide receivers: former XFL stud and P.J. Walker teammate Cam Phillips, plus Jeff Badet, Saeed Blacknall and Darrell Stewart. Expect one of them to sign in a couple of days.

On the bright side, linebacker Shaq Thompson is back to 100% after being limited for a while due to tightness in his groin.

The trend at receiver may be discouraging, but the good news is that so far there haven’t been any serious injuries for any critical players.

Panthers injury updates: WR Seth Roberts, WR Omar Bayless

The Panthers wide receiver corps is taking some hits at training camp.

The Panthers wide receiver corps is taking some hits at training camp.

After today’s practice, coach Matt Rhule told reporters undrafted rookie Omar Bayless will need surgery to repair the issue that’s been causing swelling in his knee and keeping him off the field the last few days.

Just brutal. Bayless had a strong shot to make the 53-man roster based on his strong start to camp. Now that seems unlikely. Assuming Bayless goes on IR, the best candidate to earn that spot is now likely Tommylee Lewis, another connection with Joe Brady from New Orleans.

Because it’s 2020, it gets worse.

In related news, another receiver was added to what would normally be an official injury report during the preseason. Rhule says Seth Roberts is currently in the concussion protocol.

These two updates come on the heels of more bad news at wide receiver. Keith Kirkwood will be out for several weeks with a broken clavicle (also requiring surgery) and could miss Week 1 against the Raiders. Curtis Samuel is also dealing with a hamstring issue.

Panthers 2020 training camp: 6 takeaways from Saturday’s scrimmage

The Carolina Panthers practiced inside Bank of America Stadium this morning and played their first scrimmage of training camp.

The Carolina Panthers practiced inside Bank of America Stadium this morning and played their first scrimmage of training camp.

Here are six takeaways from the media on-hand.

Teddy Bridgewater’s strong start

There probably won’t be many highlights coming out of this practice due to restrictions on what reporters are allowed to show this year. So, we will have to settle for a box score for now. For what it’s worth, Bridgewater had a fine day based on the raw stats.

The Riot Report says he started 9/13 for 159 yards and two touchdowns and had another wiped out by a penalty.

Strong numbers, but they should be taken with an unhealthy dose of salt as Bridgewater faced backups as well as starters. Also, some analysts are projecting the Panthers will have the NFL’s worst defense this year, so odds are they are going to make a lot of quarterbacks look good.

That said, this is another positive sign for Bridgewater, who has done everything right so far – including staying late to get extra reps in. He continued that trend today.

Things can always change once the live games begin. Right now, this looks and sounds a lot like it’s Teddy Bridgewater’s team.

Look: Teddy Bridgewater training with Robby Anderson, Seth Roberts

On Monday, Anderson shared a few photos on Instagram of himself training with Bridgewater.

The two biggest free agent signings for the Panthers this year were quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (three years, $63 million) and wide receiver Robby Anderson (two years, $20 million). They’re already at work despite the pandemic.

On Monday, Anderson shared a few photos on Instagram of himself training with Bridgewater. In one of them he also tagged Seth Roberts, another new face at wide receiver this year.

A post shared by Robby Anderson (@chosen1ra) on

Anderson and Bridgewater have crossed paths before.

They both played their high school football in Florida and have been on the same NFL team previously – they were both with the Jets in 2019. However, Bridgewater was traded to the Saints just before the season began so they never actually got on the field together in a real game. Anderson has developed into one of the league’s most potent deep threats. If Bridgewater can get into a rhythm with him on long balls and embrace throwing them it will be a huge boost for Joe Brady’s offense.

As for Roberts, the Panthers gave him a one-year, $3.75 million contract. That’s a lot for a receiver who won’t have a significant role in the offense. Our best guess is that they see him as the WR4 on the roster.

Ravens on track to earn 1 compensatory pick in 2021 NFL Draft

The Baltimore Ravens have usually been great at gaming the compensatory pick formula but are currently on track to earn just one in 2021

[jwplayer 1Of71mAD-ThvAeFxT]

The Baltimore Ravens are one of the best teams at gaming the compensatory pick formula. Though the NFL had been handing out comp picks for two years before the Ravens came into existence, Baltimore has managed to lead in that department. Their 52 comp picks outpace the 43 selections the two teams tied for second (Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots) have earned. With the Ravens entering this offseason with 21 pending free agents, there was some hope Baltimore would once again top the league when the 2021 comp picks were handed out.

After more than a week of free agency, the Ravens actually haven’t earned as much as originally expected. According to Over The Cap, Baltimore is currently on track to earn a sixth-round pick back after calculating their additions and losses.

Part of the problem is actually a positive for the Ravens this offseason. Baltimore has done a great job of re-signing their own free agents, bringing back potential comp pick earners like cornerback Jimmy Smith, safety Chuck Clark and defensive end Jihad Ward. Re-signing their own players from a 14-2 team is a smart move but it limits what the Ravens can earn in comp picks.

Baltimore has also been aggressive this offseason, adding Calais Campbell and agreeing to terms with Michael Brockers. Yet, thanks to Campbell coming via a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, it’s really only Brockers that is set to count against them currently. According to OTC, his addition will wipe out the loss of Michael Pierce, who signed a three-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings worth $27 million. That leaves — surprisingly enough — wide receiver Seth Roberts’ one-year deal as the only player set to earn the Ravens a comp pick.

Baltimore doesn’t have any free agents remaining that are expected to get big enough deals to earn any more comp picks. With a few major needs still remaining which could be remedied in free agency, the Ravens could easily be looking at a rare year where they don’t get any extra selections.
