UGA vs. Ole Miss series history

Georgia Bulldogs versus Ole Miss Rebels football series history: Dawgs on top

The Georgia Bulldogs lead the all-time series history over the Ole Miss Rebels 33-13-1. Georgia has won 11 of the last 12 meetings in the series, but the Bulldogs did not win their last trip to Oxford.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is 1-1 in his career against Ole Miss with his only loss to the Rebels coming in 2016. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is 0-1 against Georgia.

Let’s take a look back at some of the recent meetings between the two SEC foes.

Nov. 11, 2023 – Georgia 52, Ole Miss 17

Georgia entered as the No. 1 team, facing a top-10 ranked Ole Miss. Georgia controlled the game from start to finish, with quarterback Carson Beck delivering a standout performance, throwing four passing touchdowns. The Bulldogs’ defense effectively limited Ole Miss’ rushing leader Quinshon Judkins and forced multiple turnovers.

Judkins scored two rushing touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to stop Georgia’s dominant offense. This victory continued Georgia’s long winning streak and strengthened their College Football Playoff hopes.

Sept. 24, 2016 – Ole Miss 45, Georgia 14

Ole Miss achieved a major victory over Georgia, with quarterback Chad Kelly showcasing his skills by passing for 282 yards and three total touchdowns. Ole Miss took an early lead with three first half touchdowns and built a commanding 31-0 halftime advantage over Kirby Smart and Georgia.

The Rebels’ defense held Georgia scoreless until the fourth quarter, where the Bulldogs scored twice but remained far behind. This game snapped a 10-game losing streak for Ole Miss against Georgia, though the result was later vacated due to NCAA sanctions.

Georgia pulled away in the second half after being down 10-0 early to Ole Miss. Quarterback Aaron Murray threw for 384 yards, leading a scoring surge that saw Georgia outscore Ole Miss 37-0 after the Rebels’ early advantage. The Bulldogs’ defense tightened up, intercepting passes and shutting down Ole Miss for the rest of the game. Georgia won at home to maintain its lead in the SEC East race.

Sept. 24, 2011 – Georgia 27, Ole Miss 13

Georgia overcame a slow start with running back Isaiah Crowell and quarterback Aaron Murray leading the way offensively. Crowell’s rushing and Murray’s passing helped Georgia establish a lead, while their defense contained Ole Miss, which struggled to find momentum on offense.

Georgia held a 17-7 halftime lead and maintained control in the second half. The game secured Georgia’s first conference win of the season, and the Bulldogs gained momentum toward a strong SEC finish.

Lions aiming to snap some sordid series history vs. the Titans

Lions aiming to snap some sordid series history vs. the Titans, with Detroit never having beaten Tennessee

The Detroit Lions have never defeated the Tennessee Titans. As unlikely as that might seem, it’s a fact that dates back to the beginning of the 21st century.

That should change in Week 8. Should

The Lions are favored on Sunday by more points in a game than they have been since before the Titans existed in Nashville. The line is now 11.5 points in Detroit’s favor, and that could very well go up now that the Titans have traded starting WR DeAndre Hopkins and top LB Ernest Jones this week.

That six-game losing streak to the Titans won’t erase itself, however. In the last meeting inside Ford Field, the Lions were six-point favorites. That was Week 2 of the 2016 season, Jim Caldwell’s final year coaching Detroit. The Mike Mularkey-coached Titans eked out a 16-15 win by scoring the final 13 points, all in the fourth quarter.

Because the Titans kept all the franchise records in their move from Houston, the series includes Tennessee’s decades as the Oilers, too. The Lions did beat the Oilers back in 1995 in the old Astrodome. That game featured two touchdown catches by Herman Moore from Scott Mitchell and 10 combined turnovers in a 24-17 Lions win that happened to be one of Barry Sanders’ worst career games (54 yards on 19 carries).

The Lions have only ever won one home game against the franchise, beating the Oilers in Week 5 of the 1986 season. Going back to that game some 38 years ago, it presents a cautionary tale for how this year’s heavily-favored Lions can avoid a stunning upset.

The box score says Houston dominated Detroit that day. Warren Moon threw for 398 yards for the Oilers, while Eric Hipple managed 93 in the air. However, the Lions picked off Moon three times, twice inside the Detroit 5-yard line. Grinding out 158 rushing yards on 47 carries — a figure they’ve not since topped — Daryl Rogers’ Lions ground Jerry Glanville’s run-and-shoot Oilers into submission.

That is the most sensical way the Titans can keep their unblemished record against Detroit intact–keep the Lions offense off the field and have Jared Goff make uncharacteristic mistakes. The odds say that’s an extreme longshot, and the Lions should end one of the weirder team vs. team anomalies in the NFL on Sunday.

History of the Oregon Ducks series against the Illinois Fighting Illini

Check out the short history between the Oregon Ducks and the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Like many of the traditional Big Ten opponents on the Oregon Ducks 2024 schedule, the Illinois Fighting Illini don’t have much history against Oregon. They’ve played three times in their history, but Saturday’s game in Autzen Stadium will be their most significant matchup to date.

The first meeting between these two teams was in 1970, with the Fighting Illini winning 20-16 in Champaign. Those Ducks were coached by Jerry Frei in his second-to-last season with the program. Oregon finished 6-4-1 that year and didn’t play in a bowl game.

The next two games between these teams came in the nineties as a part of a home-and-home series. Oregon went to Champaign in 1993, winning 13-7, and two years later, they won 34-31 in Eugene.

The 1993 season was one of Rich Brooks’ final seasons as head coach of the Ducks, wrapping up a legendary coaching career. Brooks left after the 1994 season to coach the St. Louis Rams, and he was succeeded by his offensive coordinator: Mike Bellotti. The Ducks 1995 matchup against Illinois was Bellotti’s first home game as a head coach, and he went on to become the winningest coach in Oregon Ducks history.

This week’s game is the first time both teams have been ranked for any of their matchups and the first time either team has been ranked inside the top 20. Oregon definitely has the edge, but Illinois is a good team. There aren’t many games left on the schedule, so both teams will be heavily motivated this week.

Broncos vs. Raiders series history: Denver aims to snap 8-game losing streak

The Broncos and Raiders will meet for the 130th time on Sunday. Denver will aim to snap an eight-game losing streak against their rival.

It’s rivalry week for the Denver Broncos as they are set to face the Las Vegas Raiders for the first time in 2024 in Week 5.

This will be the 130th all-time meeting of the teams, as the Raiders lead the series 73-54-2 against the Broncos. Denver looks to come in hungry against Las Vegas, as the Raiders have won eight straight games in this matchup. In those eight victories, Las Vegas has outscored the Broncos 218-149.

The last game played between these two teams came at the end of 2023, as the Broncos featured quarterback Jarrett Stidham under center, while the Raiders started then-rookie Aidan O’Connell. Stidham finished 20-of-34 for 272 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a 27-14 loss.

This week, Denver rookie quarterback Bo Nix looks to win his third straight game after back-to-back wins versus the Buccaneers and Jets on the road.

The Broncos will wear their iconic throwback jerseys, which hopefully will bring them luck as they celebrate the 1977 team that went to Super Bowl XXII. That year, the “Orange Crush” and the “M and M” connection of quarterback Craig Morton and wide receiver Haven Moses beat the Raiders 20-17 in the AFC Championship.

Maybe Denver can “make those miracles happen” one more time.

Broncos vs. Bucs series history: Denver has dominated series

The Broncos lead the all-time series against the Buccaneers 7-3.

The Denver Broncos head into their Week 3 matchup in Florida against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looking to improve their 0-2 record.

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix is seeking his first passing touchdown of the season, and the Denver offense looks to kickstart against a very difficult Bucs defense that defeated the reigning NFC champion Detroit Lions in Week 2.

These two teams have met ten times prior, and the Broncos have dominated the all-time series 7-3.

The Bucs and Broncos last met during the COVID-19-affected season in 2020. Denver featured two quarterbacks during the game, Jeff Driskel and Brett Rypien against future Pro Football Hall of Famer Tom Brady.

Broncos quarterbacks went a combined 25-of-39 passing for 229 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while Brady went 25-of-38 for 297 yards and three touchdowns. Denver lost to the eventual Super Bowl champions, 28-10.

Before that, the Broncos defeated the Bucs 27-7 in 2016.

Denver will look to right the ship of the past two games and find its offensive rhythm against Tampa Bay in the first of a two-game road trip this weekend.

Broncos vs. Cardinals series history: 30th preseason showdown on deck

Sunday will mark the 30th time the Broncos and Cardinals have faced off in a preseason game.

The Denver Broncos face off against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday morning at Empower Field at Mile High in the third and final preseason contest for both teams, before trimming rosters from 90 to 53.

After naming Bo Nix their starter earlier this week, the Broncos will take a close look at Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson on Sunday to determine who will serve as the backup quarterback in 2024.

Arizona is one of Denver’s most frequent preseason opponents, with Sunday’s matchup marking their 30th preseason showdown. The Cardinals came away with an 18-17 victory in a preseason thriller last summer, but the Broncos lead the all-time preseason series 19-10.

Denver and Arizona have played 12 times in the regular season, with Denver owning a 10-1-1 record all-time. The only time the Cardinals beat the Broncos was in 2010, a 43-13 blowout.

Denver looks to wrap up the preseason on a winning note, with building blocks in place for the future. This game will help solidify the 53-man roster, which needs to be finalized by 2 p.m. MT on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Broncos vs. Packers series history: 11th preseason showdown on deck

The Denver Broncos will face the Packers in their preseason home opener on Sunday, marking the 11th time these teams have met in preseason.

The Denver Broncos will face off against the Green Bay Packers at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday night.

This will be the 11th time the two teams face off in the preseason, where the Broncos have dominated with a 7-3 overall preseason record. The last preseason game between Denver and Green Bay happened in Colorado in 2017.

The Broncos and the Packers last played in the regular season in 2023, a Week 7 showdown. Then-Denver quarterback Russell Wilson went 20-of-29 for 194 yards and one touchdown. Broncos kicker Wil Lutz went a perfect four-for-four on field goals, including one from 52 yards out in a 19-17 victory. Wilson’s Green Bay counterpart Jordan Love went 21-of-31 for 180 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

The Broncos will start rookie quarterback Bo Nix on Sunday night, which head coach Sean Payton decided on before last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Denver will wear their Summit White uniforms this week at home with orange pants, the debut of the second uniform combination from the Mile High Collection, which was introduced in April.

Broncos vs. Colts series history: Teams face off for 14th time in preseason

The Denver Broncos kick off preseason on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, marking the 14th preseason showdown between the clubs.

Broncos Country, football is back!

Week 1 of the preseason takes the Denver Broncos from the comforts of their Mile High home to the midwest for a showdown with the Indianapolis Colts. Both teams come into the 2024 season with anxiety-ridden fan bases and young quarterbacks looking to make big impressions.

The regular season series history between the teams goes back to 1974. The Colts barely lead the overall series history, 15-14-0. In preseason, Denver leads the series 7-6, including a 1-1 record on the road. Sunday will mark the 14th time these two teams have faced off in the preseason.

The latest matchup came in 2022 in a Week 5 Thursday Night Football matchup. It was perhaps the messiest game in recent memory for both teams: four combined interceptions between former quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan, six combined fumbles between Indy and Denver and 12 total punts in a 12-9 overtime loss for the Broncos.

This time around, the Colts boast second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson and the Broncos are fixing to have a three-man race for the starting job between Jarrett Stidham, rookie Bo Nix and journeyman Zach Wilson.

While a win would be nice, more importantly, the Broncos and head coach Sean Payton will look to shape the 53-man roster. These preseason games will help Denver’s staff evaluate players ahead of roster cuts later this month.

2024 Saints game previews: Week 16 at Green Bay Packers

The Saints have a pivotal road game with the Green Bay Packers in Week 16. It’s a must-win if they want to be part of the playoff picture:

Every game is important, but the stakes get higher in December. And that’s when the New Orleans Saints have a pivotal road game with the Green Bay Packers. They’ll make the trip for what may be a snowy night game at Lambeau Field in Week 16, and it’s a must-win if they want to be part of the playoff picture.

The Saints nearly got it done last season against a Packers team that isn’t looking much different a year later. New Orleans took a 17-point lead into the fourth quarter but fell apart once Derek Carr left the game with an injury. Dennis Allen’s defense gave up 18 points and Jameis Winston wasn’t able to put any points on the board after stepping inn for Carr. It was an embarrassing loss, and it ultimately played a part in the Saints failing to qualify for the playoffs.

New Orleans trails Green Bay by a margin of 18-10 in the all-time series history, and they’ve won just once at Green Bay in their last four trips since 2011. The Saints would earn a lot of confidence from fans by avenging last year’s loss with a win on “Monday Night Football.”

So how are the Packers different this time around? They got younger at running back by swapping Josh Jacobs for Aaron Jones in free agency, but their biggest move was signing safety Xavier McKinney to a $68 million contract. They also brought in former Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Andre Dillard for more depth. In the draft, Green Bay added first-round offensive lineman Jordan Morgan plus second-round defenders Edgerrin Cooper (a linebacker from Texas A&M) and Javon Bullard (a safety from Georgia).

All eyes will be on Lambeau field when the Saints and Packers match up in prime time. So be sure to mark your calendar:

  • Game information: New Orleans Saints at Green Bay Packers
  • Location: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wis.
  • Date: Dec. 23
  • Time: 7:15 p.m. CT / 8:15 p.m. ET
  • TV Channel: ESPN

Detroit Lions vs. San Francisco 49ers is a rematch 66 years in the making

Detroit Lions vs. San Francisco 49ers is a rematch of the last Lions playoff win on the road way back in 1957

The Detroit Lions are setting themselves up to face off against the San Francisco 49ers this coming Sunday. The winner of that battle of top-tier NFC teams will represent the conference in Super Bowl LVIII.

This is not the first time these two teams have faced off with a chance to play for a league championship.

On Dec. 22, 1957, a mere 66 years ago, the Lions and 49ers met in San Francisco in the Western Conference title game. The Niners held a commanding 24-7 halftime lead, led by the passing of Y.A Tittle. The second half saw the Lions score 24 points while holding the 49ers to just three points, with Detroit advancing to the NFL Championship against the Cleveland Browns.

This 49ers team is likely to come out of the gates firing. They will be pressing the Lions’ secondary and linebacking groups. Brock Purdy will be doing his best Tittle impression, but the Lions need to do what they did back in 1957 — bend but not break. This Lions defense has done that all year, and they need to do it for two more games.

Will history repeat itself come Sunday?
