Broncos vs. Jets series history: Denver holds all-time advantage

The Broncos lead the all-time series against the Jets 22-17-1. This week, Denver will host New York’s offense led by Nathaniel Hackett.

Week 5 of the NFL season brings the Nathaniel Hackett-led New York Jets offense into Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday against the Sean Payton-led Denver Broncos.

The Broncos hold an advantage over the Jets in the all-time series, with a 22-17-1 record.

This meeting holds significantly more intrigue than the past four games for both teams. Both teams come into this game with identical 1-3 records, each team has their lion’s share of issues with their on-field product, and both Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and current Broncos coach Sean Payton have led Denver.

Hackett’s well-documented 15-game tenure with the Broncos was heavily criticized by Payton this offseason. However, Payton’s team achieved something just two short weeks ago that hasn’t happened since the 1960s when they surrendered 70 points in a regular season contest.

The last meeting of these teams happened when Hackett was at the helm in 2022. The final result was a 16-9 Jets win. Former Broncos backup quarterback Brett Rypien started in place of Russell Wilson, and finished the loss 24-of-49 passing for 225 yards with one interception.

We hope that this game’s pregame fireworks will play out on the turf on Sunday.

Series history: Broncos seek first win of season, eighth all-time vs. Dolphins

The last time the Broncos faced the Dolphins, then-rookie Tua Tagovailoa was benched.

Week 3 of the NFL season brings the Denver Broncos to South Florida for a matchup against the Miami Dolphins.

This week will be no beach vacation: the Dolphins are 2-0, and the leader of the AFC East over the Patriots, Bills and Jets.

Week 3 will be the 21st meeting between these two franchises, dating back to 1966. The Dolphins lead the all-time series, 12-7-1.

The last game between these two was during the COVID-19 season in 2020. Then-rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa started for the Dolphins, but the Denver defense proved to be a tough foe. Tagovailoa was pulled late in the game in favor of veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick led a valiant Miami effort in an attempt to tie the game, but an end zone interception by Broncos Justin Simmons sealed the game for a 20-13 win.

Denver’s quarterback was Drew Lock, who went 18-of-30 for 270 yards and an interception. Then-starting running back Melvin Gordon scored two touchdowns and led the Broncos rushing attack with 84 yards.

The Broncos will look to get Sean Payton’s first win of the 2023 season against this talented Miami team this weekend.

Purdue HC Ryan Walters discusses Wisconsin’s 16-game win streak against the Boilermakers

Purdue HC Ryan Walters is aware of his program’s struggles against Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Badgers enter Week 4 of the 2023 football season at 2-1, though still with more questions than answers about the caliber of the team.

Convincing out-of-conference wins against Buffalo and Georgia Southern looked easy on the scoreboard, though neither felt like the resounding blowouts they should’ve been. Then add a 31-22 loss at Washington State and you’re looking at a Wisconsin Badger team with a worse season-long outlook than they had entering Week 1.

Next up is a trip to West Lafayette for a Friday night matchup with 1-2 Purdue. The Badgers haven’t lost to the Boilermakers since 2003, now having won sixteen straight games in the series.

Purdue new head coach Ryan Walters is already off to a shaky start to his tenure with home losses to Fresno State and Syracuse. Walters spoke on Wisconsin’s dominance of Purdue over the last two decades, noting “if we want to get to where we want to go as a program, that’s a school we’re going to have to beat year in and year out.”

Friday night could be a tale of two trajectories at the final whistle. Whichever team wins has a leg-up in the Big Ten West and could appear to have turned a corner, while the loser will have its Big Ten Championship hopes quickly fade away.

Oregon Series History: Ducks have a long past with Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Of all the Ducks’ non-conference opponents this year, Oregon and Hawaii have the most history.

Of Oregon’s three non-conference matchups to start the season, the all-time series against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors is definitely the most storied. Unlike Portland State and Texas Tech — which are schools that have only been playing the Ducks since the 1990s —  Hawaii played its first game against the Ducks for the first time in 1921.

The Ducks won that game (47-0) as they did the next three games. In total, the Ducks and the Rainbow Warriors have faced off 7 times in the last 101 years, and their 8th will be on Saturday.

Even though the Ducks won the first four games of the series against Hawaii, this series has been anything but a David vs. Goliath story. Since 1988 — the fifth time these two teams faced off — the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have won each game, each of which took place within six years.

I’ve looked at that era of Ducks football a lot because it’s right around the same time Oregon played Portland State and Texas Tech last, so we know that during this period, the Ducks were led by the legendary head coach, Rich Brooks. In 1988 the Ducks had two QBs rotating in and out between Pete Nelson and Bill Musgrave. In the early 1990s, the QB was Danny O’Neil — whom the Rainbow Warriors defeated twice.

It’s been almost 30 years since their last matchup, but the upcoming game on Saturday is expected to end up much more like the ones of the early 20th century than the last few matchups between these teams. After the stressful outing that was the Texas Tech game, I could use a Ducks win that is never in doubt.

Broncos vs. Raiders series history: Denver looks to get first win against Las Vegas

The Broncos have not beaten the Raiders since they moved from Oakland. Las Vegas is undefeated (6-0) against Denver since 2019.

The Denver Broncos will begin their 2023 campaign under head coach Sean Payton against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

The Raiders lead the Broncos 71-54-2 in the all-time series, and this rivalry goes all the way back to their AFL days in the 1960s.

In 2022, Denver was outscored by Las Vegas with a combined score of 54-39. Quarterback Russell Wilson threw for a combined two touchdowns and 484 yards, dueling with former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who threw for 495 yards and two touchdowns.

Las Vegas running back Josh Jacobs has been a thorn in the Broncos’ side for a long time. In 2022, Jacobs ran roughshod over the Denver defense, gaining over 100 yards in each game, and two touchdowns.

The Broncos have lost six straight games against the Raiders. The last time Denver beat them, they still played in Oakland (2019).

The key to starting 2023 off right for the Broncos is getting a win on their home turf in front of a sold-out crowd at Empower Field at Mile High. Denver could get its first win of the season for new coach Sean Payton, and their first against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Saints vs. Titans series history: Who owns the all-time record?

New Orleans Saints vs. Tennessee Titans series history: Who owns the all-time record? Once-rare meetings have developed into a fun rivalry:

We used to go through entire generations of NFL players without the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans competing against each other. The two teams met once every three years until the league expanded in the early 2000’s, at which point those games were spaced out in four-year increments.

That changed radically in 2021 with the introduction of a 17-game schedule that put more AFC-NFC matchups in the rotation. The Saints and Titans have used that opportunity to forge a fun geographic rivalry. They’ve split the last four games 2-2, with the Saints losing a close one 23-21 in 2021.

The Titans own the all-time series record at 9-6-1, going back to their early franchise history when they were still known as the Houston Oilers. Preseason games aren’t often remembered but the Saints have played more of them with the Titans franchise (30) than many other teams.

It’s interesting to see a rivalry kind of organically develop here. Nashville is easier for Saints fans to visit than most NFL cities, being a seven-and-a-half hour drive from New Orleans (with some flights clocking in at just a few hours). And when they haven’t been competing on the field the two teams have been often targeting the same players in the offseason, like cornerback Caleb Farley in the 2021 NFL draft or free agent wide receiver Adam Humphries in 2019. Janoris Jenkins landed with the Titans after leaving the Saints. So did Kenny Vaccaro.

And so did their longtime nemesis Julio Jones. The Saints weren’t able to cut a trade for Malcolm Butler back in the day and he wound up signing with the Titans. Former Saints head coach Jim Haslett was on Mike Vrabel’s coaching staff for a few years before he took over the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons. You see all these connections? That’s history.

Hopefully the Saints can get a win on Sunday to tip that all-time record a little closer in their favor. It’ll take some time to even things out completely, but a victory at the Caesars Superdome this week would go a long way.

GOAT Herders: Cowboys put finishing touch on Brady’s historic career

Brady’s comeback in 2022 ultimately gave the Cowboys two more cracks at beating the GOAT. They did it in what will be his final NFL game. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Tom Brady has announced his retirement from football. Again. Exactly one year- to the day- after he announced his retirement from football the first time.

In 2022, that Feb. 1 declaration lasted just 40 days before he changed his mind. This time, though, it’s “for good,” he said in a quick video statement he posted to social media on Wednesday. “You only get one super-emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year.”

And while the 45-year-old goes out owning an entire trophy room’s worth of NFL records- Super Bowl rings, division titles, playoff starts, passing yards, touchdown throws, game-winning drives among them- he also goes out on a losing note.

The Cowboys’ 31-14 win on Jan. 16 over the Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the postseason will, assuming this retirement holds up, go down as Brady’s final NFL game appearance. Dallas snuck the victory in just under the wire; they had never beaten Brady before in seven previous meetings.

Cowboys fans thought they had missed their chance at taking down the GOAT when he retired the first time. His comeback ended up giving Dallas two more shots at him, and they finally made good with the last one.

Here’s a look back at the series history between Brady and the Cowboys.

Broncos vs. Chargers series history: Denver aims to snap losing streak

The Broncos need to beat the Chargers on Sunday to avoid going winless in the AFC West this season.

The Denver Broncos will finish their 2022 campaign against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 18.

To say that this season has been one for the history books — in a bad way — is an understatement. Before the season, the Broncos were predestined to a place in the upper echelon of AFC talent. Instead, expectations fell short in almost every way. From coaching issues to playcalling woes, to the worst injury problem in the NFL, Denver has experienced it all.

On the other hand, the Chargers have also experienced injuries, which led them to see new faces on all sides of the ball. Despite those injuries, Los Angeles found a way to win games, eventually clinching a playoff spot on wild-card weekend.

When these two teams met in Week 6, it took overtime for the Chargers to beat the Broncos.

Denver leads the all-time series against Los Angeles 70-55-1, but the Chargers have won three of their last four showdowns with the Broncos. Denver will hope to snap a two-game losing streak to L.A. and avoid going 0-6 in the AFC West on Sunday.

The Broncos will hope to end the season on a positive note in front of a home crowd. Can they pull one out against a playoff team?

Broncos vs. Rams series history: Denver looks to snap 4-game losing streak vs. L.A.

The Broncos have lost four-straight games against the Rams, with their last victory against them in 2002.

The Denver Broncos are hoping to give fans a Christmas gift with a win against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

Denver is coming off a win against the banged-up Arizona Cardinals, while the Rams are fresh off a Monday night loss versus the Green Bay Packers.

Both teams have underwhelmed this season. The Broncos’ offense that everyone thought would be a top threat in the AFC has never quite materialized. Los Angeles is the defending Super Bowl champion, but the team will not repeat this year. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is going to finish the 2022 season on injured reserve with a neck injury.

Denver has a four-game losing streak against Los Angeles, dating back to the Rams’ days in St. Louis. The last time the Broncos won a game against them was in 2002, when Brian Griese was slinging touchdowns to Ed McCaffrey, and Jason Elam was kicking field goals. Marshall Faulk starred for the Rams, and Kurt Warner was two years removed from “The Greatest Show on Turf.”

Overall, L.A. leads the all-time series against Denver 9-5.

Russell Wilson looks to defeat his former NFC West foe, although he has a losing record (8-12 all-time) against them.

Saints sweep the Falcons in 2022, tie up all-time record in the NFL’s best rivalry

The Saints won 21-18 on Sunday to sweep the Falcons in 2022, tying up the all-time record in the NFL’s best rivalry series:

Bang: the New Orleans Saints knocked off the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday to win 21-18, improving their record to 5-9 on the year. But this is big for bragging rights in the NFL’s best rivalry series. Beyond having swept the Falcons in 2022, the Saints have now caught Atlanta in the all-time record with their oldest rivals.

If you include the one playoff meeting (which the Falcons won), both teams are now tied up at 54-54 head-to-head. If you only count regular season games, New Orleans leads the series 54-53. The Saints and Falcons started out together in the old NFC West, and they moved on to form the NFC South together in 2002. They’ve been squaring up twice a year ever since.

The Falcons have led the series by 10 or more games twice, by the way. They enjoyed a 44-32 lead when Sean Payton was hired as head coach way back in 2006. But Payton went 21-9 against the dirty birds (the Saints split the series 1-1 without him in 2012), and now Dennis Allen has swept them in 2022. A win next year puts New Orleans ahead no matter how you slice it.

It’s kind of fitting that the Saints would tie it all up with Atlanta during the most disappointing, hard-to-watch campaign in recent memory. For years fans in New Orleans and Atlanta would both say that even if they lost every other game, they could live with it so long as they beat that other team. It’s not ideal to have to look for things like this as silver linings, but look: times are hard, and we’ll take them. Just like the Saints took this win and, depending on how you look at it, the all-time record.
