Eagle FC 44 results: Sergei Kharitonov overwhelms Tyrone Spong on mat for TKO

Sergei Kharitonov’s ground game was too much for Tyrone Spong in the Eagle FC 44 main event.

[autotag]Sergei Kharitonov[/autotag]’s grappling was too much for [autotag]Tyrone Spong[/autotag] in the Eagle FC 44 main event.

Kharitonov (34-9) utilized his most obvious path to victory in the heavyweight bout, which took place Friday at FLXcast Arena in Miami. He needed just two takedowns – one in the first and one in the second – to get Spong (2-1) in position to finish the fight with strikes in mount to secure the TKO at the 2:55 mark of Round 2.

In the first round, Spong didn’t hesitate to land heavy leg and body kicks. They were hard and sounded across the venue. However, Kharitonov looked to close the distance and pressure Spong with no stepping back.

A few seconds into the round, Kharitonov got a takedown. He went for a choke and neck crank from side control but Spong was able to defend and get out. From there Kharitonov moved to mount and began landing ground-and-pound while Spong looked to get up. The shots came often and heavy but Spong did enough to hang on and see the end of the round.

The second round was much better for Spong, but the Russian still managed to get the best of the fight. He was able to circle and stop Kharitonov’s takedowns for half the round while landing nasty leg kicks and combinations to the body and head. With about three minutes remaining, Kharitonov caught a leg kick and took the fight to the ground.

It didn’t take long for Kharitonov to get the mount, pour and ground-and-pound, and get the TKO win.

In his 40’s, Kharitonov enjoying a solid run in combat sports. He’s 6-1 in his past seven fights, being 4-1 in MMA and 2-0 in boxing. His lone defeat came against Cheick Kongo in the main event of Bellator 265. Kharitonov has wins over many notable names such as Alistair Overeem, Andrei Arlovski, Roy Nelson and Fabricio Werdum.

Meanwhile, with this result, Spong suffered his first combat sports career since 2014 where he had a leg break after throwing a kick against Gokhan Saki. It was Spong’s return to MMA competition, as he hadn’t fought in MMA rule set since fighting for World Series of Fighting in 2013.

“I want to continue to fight for Eagle FC and fight for the belt,” Kharitonov said through an interpreter during his post-fight interview with Henry Cejudo.

Bellator 265 results: Cheick Kongo rallies, submits Sergei Kharitonov at buzzer in wild Round 2

What started as a slow heavyweight fight quickly spun off the rails and ended with Cheick Kongo getting the tap with one second left in Round 2.

[autotag]Cheick Kongo[/autotag] has a knack for comebacks, and he showed that Friday.

In the Bellator 265 main event, Kongo submitted veteran Russian heavyweight [autotag]Sergei Kharitonov[/autotag] at 4:59 of  what turned into a wild second round.

The event took place at Sanford Pentagon. The main card aired on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Entering Round 2, things didn’t look great for Kongo. Throughout the first round, he was stalked, jabbed, and even poked in the eye with an errant toe on a kick. However, midway through Round 2, Kongo (31-11-2 MMA, 13-3 BMMA) flipped the script and hurt Kharitonov (32-9 MMA, 3-3 BMMA) with a series of punches.

With his opponent against the cage and seemingly still stunned, Kongo elected to shoot for a takedown, which he successfully secured. The fighters crashed to the canvas with a heavy thud.

Once on the mat, Kongo worked to mount and Kharitonov rolled, which exposed his neck. As the clock winded down, Kongo snuck in a rear-naked choke attempt. The tap came with one second left in Round 2.

Kongo, 46, returns to the win column after a split decision loss to Tim Johnson in October 2020. The victory is his first since February 2019, but his ninth in his most recent 11 attempts.

As for Kharitonov, the 41-year-old had a two-fight winning streak snapped. It’s only the second loss he’s suffered since November 2016 and the first by submission since September 2011.

Tyrell Fortune wants Sergei Kharitonov next unless ‘he keeps running’

Following his Bellator 251 win, Tyrell Fortune is eyeing Sergei Kharitonov next, who he claims ducked him.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Following his Bellator 251 win, [autotag]Tyrell Fortune[/autotag] is eyeing someone he claims ducked him.

Fortune (9-1 MMA, 9-1 BMMA) got back in the win column when he defeated Said Sowma by unanimous decision in the co-main event Thursday night.

Speaking at the post-fight news conference, Fortune proceeded to call [autotag]Sergei Kharitonov[/autotag] out, who Fortune says was meant to be his original opponent before the Russian turned him down.

“This fight was supposed to be against Sergei Kharitonov,” Fortune said. “I stepped up and I was originally scheduled to fight Linton (Vassell) in December and we both had accepted that fight, and then Kharitonov’s opponent fell out. And so Bellator asked me, ‘Do you want to step up and fight Sergei?’ I was like, ‘Hell yeah, I want to fight Sergei.’

“I stepped up, and then Sergei was like, ‘I don’t want to fight Tyrell.’ I even hit him up on Instagram and called him a little (expletive) and talked some (expletive) to him and he didn’t respond, so I’ll take Sergei unless he wants to keep running.”

In the first co-main event slot of his career, Fortune was a little critical of his performance. He went the distance for the first time in almost three years.

“Me, personally, I’m disappointed with my performance just because of how I felt, and I felt like I could have done a lot more – and I know my coaches, too,” Fortune said. “So I think I could have done a lot better. I think I utilized my opportunities as much as I can, and I go out there and fight to the best of my abilities whatever slot. So the slot to me doesn’t matter as long as I’m in the cage and I’ve got a job to do.”

Sergei Kharitonov walks out with a bear, stops former Mike Tyson nemesis in pro boxing debut

Bellator heavyweight Sergei Kharitonov scored a big win on his pro boxing debut after being walked to the ring by a live bear. Yes, really!

As a man with 50 combined MMA and kickboxing bouts to his name, [autotag]Sergei Kharitonov[/autotag] is no stranger to the ring, and he successfully parlayed that combat sports experience into a winning performance on his professional boxing debut Friday night in Russia.

Forty-year-old Bellator heavyweight Kharitonov took on Danny Williams, who knocked out Mike Tyson in the fourth round back in 2004, in Khimki. On a remarkable night, the big Russian made a grand entrance, then scored a second-round TKO victory after a strange-looking stoppage in their heavyweight contest.

Kharitonov dropped 47-year-old Williams hard in the first round with a clubbing left hook, then finished the British heavyweight in the second round after some heavy shots from close quarters sent Williams staggering backward.

But even more notable than Kharitonov’s victory in the ring was his journey to get to the squared circle as he was accompanied down the ramp by a live bear, prompting the commentators to react in disbelief after initially assuming the trained animal was actually a man in a costume.

It’s not clear whether the presence of a bear intimidated 82-fight veteran Williams, but Kharitonov’s punch power certainly did enough to stun the Brit as the big Russian claimed a big win on his boxing debut.

Bellator 234 results: Linton Vassell TKOs Sergei Kharitonov, Austin Vanderford still unbeaten

Check out the results from Bellator 234, where Linton Vassell got back in the win column in a big way.

[autotag]Linton Vassell[/autotag] is back in the win column – and in a big way.

In his return to heavyweight, Vassell, a former two-time light heavyweight title challenger, defeated [autotag]Sergei Kharitonov[/autotag] via second-round TKO on Thursday. The fight between Vassell (20-8 MMA, 8-5 BMMA) and Kharitonov (30-8 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) served as the headliner for Bellator 234, which took place at Menora Mivtachim Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel, and aired on Paramount/DAZN on Friday via tape delay.

The fight opened with Kharitonov stalking Vassell, who was content to circle on the outside during the opening couple of minutes of Round 1 before shooting in for a takedown. It was initially stuffed, but Vassell managed to complete it despite Kharitonov’s initial grabbing of the fence. Vassell spent the second half of the round controlling from top position with composed ground-and-pound until the horn sounded.

Round 2 opened the same way as the first, but Vassell mixed things up with a high kick that was blocked before shooting for another takedown. This time, Vassell completed it on his first attempt, and the two men crashes to the canvas. It didn’t take long for Vassell to control Kharitonov’s back. At one point, Vassell sunk in a rear-naked choke that he released in favor of throwing punches from a back mount. All Kharitonov could do was turtle up, forcing the stoppage midway through the round.

With the victory, Vassell snapped a three-fight losing streak that consisted of losses to champion Ryan Bader, former champ Phil Davis and highly touted prospect Valentin Moldavsky. Kharitonov, meanwhile, suffered his first defeat in eight fights dating back to March 2017.
