Bracketology round-up: Michigan State basketball arrives to Selection Sunday

Follow along with what the bracketologists say is going to happen to Michigan State ahead of the selection show:

The time is here and it is officially Selection Sunday, unfortunately for Michigan State fans, it has turned into a stressful day of anticipation.

Quite frankly, coming into yesterday, there were four scenarios that Spartan fans did not want to see happen. Unfortunately, once again for MSU and it’s fans, all four scenarios happened and the bubble has shrunk drastically.

In unprecedented fashion, there has been five bids stolen over the past two days, turning the bubble into an absolute mess. On Friday, the Spartans were a lock and looking at a 9 or 10 seed. On Sunday morning, Dayton and the First Four might be looking like the best case scenario.

Luckily, putting Spartans fans at ease, for now, the bracketologists still love the Spartans chances of getting into the field of 68:

Ducks get favorable bid in final bracketology before Selection Sunday

The Oregon Ducks get a favorable draw in the final bracketology from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi ahead of Selection Sunday.

We will learn the fate of the Oregon Ducks on Sunday afternoon when the entire NCAA Tournament bracket is released during the annual Selection Sunday show. For now, though, we continue to speculate about whom Dana Altman’s team will face in the first round of the tournament.

[lawrence-related id=58778]

According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, the Ducks are likely to be an No. 11 seed after beating the Colorado Buffaloes in the Pac-12 championship game on Saturday night. In Lunardi’s final bracketology before Selection Sunday, he has Oregon going up against the No. 6 Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Midwest Region.

[lawrence-related id=58781]

Texas Tech finished fourth in the Big 12 this year, going 23-10.

One benefit for Oregon in this scenario: It would play the Red Raiders in Spokane, Washington, allowing a large portion of the Ducks fan base to easily get to the game.

The final bracket will be released on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. PT on CBS.

How to watch Selection Sunday, learn Oregon Ducks’ NCAA Tournament matchup

Everything you need to know about watching on Selection Sunday to learn the Oregon Ducks’ opponent in the NCAA Tournament.

It certainly didn’t feel like Selection Sunday was going to be much of an event for the Oregon Ducks, but as we’ve learned many times in the past, Dana Altman can work magic in March.

With their win over the Colorado Buffaloes in the Pac-12 championship gme on Saturday night, the Ducks clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament. They will participate in March Madness for the first time since the 2020-21 season. After two straight trips to the NIT, this is a welcome outcome for Duck fans.

How NET Rankings could determine if Notre Dame gets top-four seed

What do the Irish need to do to host NCAA Tournament games?

It’s been another good season for Notre Dame, and the NCAA Tournament is a certainty barring a complete collapse down the stretch. The latest Bracketology rankings have them as a fifth seed. But only the top four seeds in each quadrant get to be host schools for the first two rounds. That means if the forecasters were charged with creating the bracket today, there would be no postseason action in South Bend.

This raises the question of what it will take to get the Irish that coveted fourth seed. Figuring this out requires more analysis than I’m equipped to do, so I turned to my friend and World Series history podcast co-host Lucas Mitzel for help.

Lucas likes to crunch college sports numbers, particularly as they pertain to the programs for North Central College, our alma mater as well as that of Nick Shepkowski, our site’s editor. I asked Lucas to do this in relation to the Irish’s chances of getting to host tournament games. He had a very quick turnaround from the moment I asked him, which is perfect timing given the gauntlet the Irish are about to face.

While these aren’t comprehensive figures for what the Irish need to get a fourth seed, this analysis does place a heavy emphasis on NET, the tournament selection criteria system that replaced RPI for the women a few years ago. So with that in mind, here is Lucas’ interpretation of where the Irish are at:

Twitter reacts to Texas A&M’s No. 7 seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament

The Aggies’ 7-seed selection was a sign of disrespect from the committee, and Twitter let them have it in the mentions.

Texas A&M (25-9, 15-3 SEC) was deemed a 7-seed by the NCAA Selection Committee and the pitchforks were immediately drawn out on social media.

It wasn’t just the Aggies’ fateful that came to the team’s defense, for the most part, the larger college basketball landscape was just as bewildered as to how A&M could be seeded so low following their juggernaut end to the regular season.

After all, this is a team that stormed to a 15-3 SEC record, one game behind first-place Alabama. They defeated the Crimson Tide, Tennessee, and Arkansas at home. They’ve won at Auburn and Missouri and punched their ticket back to this year’s SEC title game.

It’s near impossible to ignore that body of work, even if you place an equal amount of weight on the Aggies’ non-conference record this season. A&M’s rebound in the latter half of the season made them a force to be reckoned with, which is arguably why no team wanted to draw them as a No. 5 seed, let alone a No. 7 seed.

Best of luck to the No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions, whom the Aggies will meet in the First Round on Thursday. The same goes for the No. 2 Texas Longhorns, should we get a future SEC preview in the Second Round.

After Selection Sunday, Twitter provided some notable reactions from the Aggie fan base and even a few buffoons. If you need a good laugh throughout the day, check out some of these takes below:
