McEntire earns SEC Pitcher of the Week honors after doing something Hogs haven’t since 2016

McEntire earned SEC weekly honors after doing something no Hogs pitcher had since 2016.

Will McEntire was on the schneid.

Arkansas’ right-hander, a newcomer to the weekend rotation plans this season for coach Dave Van Horn, had struggled in the first few weeks of the season to the tune of an earned-run average above 7.00.

Turns out, things just took time. McEntire was named SEC Pitcher of the Week on Monday after his dynamite start against Louisiana Tech in Game 2 of the series the Diamond Hogs would sweep over the weekend.

McEntire was the first Arkansas pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game since Dominic Taccolini in 2016 in Arkansas’ 6-1 win in the second game of the set. McEntire gave up just one run – unearned – on three hits and a walk while striking out six.

LSU pitcher Thatcher Hurd was also named to the honor with McEntire. McEntire became the second Diamond Hogs player to be given league weekly honors this year after Jared Wegner was the SEC Player of the Week after the season’s opening weekend.

Arkansas is back in action Tuesday and Wednesday against UNLV at Baum-Walker Stadium before starting a three-game set to open SEC play against Texas A&M on the weekend.

Alabama Softball: Hemphill, Kilfoyl earn All-SEC Weekly Honors

Senior Bailey Hemphill was named conference Player of the Week, while sophomore Lexy Kilfoyl was awarded Newcomer of the Week.

After a solid weekend that ended with a sweep of No. 24 Texas A&M, two Crimson Tide softball stars earned weekly awards from the Southeastern Conference.

Senior Bailey Hemphill was named conference Player of the Week, while sophomore Lexy Kilfoyl was awarded Newcomer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

Hemphill had a solid weekend at the plate, going 5-for-6 with 7 RBI in three games against the Aggies. In addition to recording five hits, Hemphill walked five times in the series, reaching base in 12 of 13 opportunities. Hemphill’s patience has paid off in her career, as she reached the 200-walk mark in game one against Texas A&M on Thursday, making her the 4th player in league history to reach that number.

For Kilfoyl, she made her presence felt all over the field in the Texas A&M series. Kilfoyl made an appearance in the circle in every game of the series. In 7.2 innings, the Land O’Lakes, Florida native struck out 13 batters while only allowing 9 hits. In Friday’s start, Kilfoyl struck out 8 batters over five innings in the 11-3 victory.

Kilfoyl has won the newcomer of the week award twice this season, and Hemphill’s honor is the second time that a Crimson Tide player has won player of the week. Kaylee Tow won the award on February 22 after a clean sweep of the Easton Bama Bash, which included two wins over LSU.

The Crimson Tide return to the diamond this weekend against the tough No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks, who are a perfect 12-0 in SEC play. Game one of the series is Friday at 6 P.M. CT.
