Alabama MBB wins SEC tournament, first since 1991

Alabama CrimsonTide basketball has won the 2021 SEC basketball tournament, their first win in 30 years.

Alabama men’s basketball entered the SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, having only lost two conference games and the regular season champions.

Today, the Crimson Tide defeated the LSU Tigers by one point, with a final score of 79-80.

These two teams have a bitter history, and it was evident in the two regular season games they played. Before today’s championship contest, the rival programs had to be separated.

Sophomore guard Jaden Shackelford led the team in scoring with 21 points, he also tallied five rebounds and four assists.

Anyone who has regularly watched Alabama basketball probably knows who led the team in rebounds. Herbert Jones got 11 total rebounds. However, Juwan Gary managed to grab eight.

The first win for the Crimson Tide in 30 years is massive for the program, it is also the first time in nearly two decades that an SEC program has won conference titles in both football and basketball.

Nate Oats is in his second season with Alabama, but has already received an extension through the 2027 season.

Alabama will now move on to the NCAA Tournament, where they are expected to be a No. 2 seed.

WATCH: Nate Oats answers if Alabama is a football or basketball school

Alabama MBB head coach Nate Oats answers the question: Is Alabama a footballor basketball school?

Alabama basketball continues their hot streak throughout the 2020-2021 postseason. After winning the SEC regular season title and the SEC Tournament championship, the Crimson Tide will head into March Madness.

Following Alabama’s one-point win over LSU for the tournament title, Nate Oats was asked by ESPN’s Marty Smith if the University of Alabama was turning into a basketball school.

Given the decades of success and 18 national championships in football, most would likely say Alabama is a football school.

The answer Alabama men’s basketball head coach Nate Oats gave may have surprised some.

He claimed that the University of Alabama was not a football school or a basketball school, it is a ‘Championship School.’

Alabama basketball demolishes Mississippi State in first game of SEC Tournament

Alabama basketball continues their reign of dominance in the SEC, as their first game of the conference tournament is a monster win.

Alabama basketball earned the No. 1 seed, as well as a first-round bye, in the SEC tournament. With their first game of the tournament against Mississippi State, the Crimson Tide did not hold back.

The final score of the contest was 48-85.

The outcome of the game is a perfect example of Alabama’s style of play: fast-paced, high scoring offense, and strong defense.

Offensively for Alabama, scoring was evenly distributed, with Jahvon Quinerly being the leading scorer with 14 points.

On the defensive side of things, Herbert Jones, who was recently named the SEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the year, recorded seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Josh Primo went down in the second half with an apparent knee injury. He was helped to the lockerroom, and his status for tomorrow’s contest is unknown.

Mississippi State struggled to get moving on offense, and was unable to limit the Crimson Tide’s scoring opportunities.

Nate Oats and Alabama will face off against the winner of Tennessee vs. Florida tomorrow afternoon.

CBB analyst ranks top 68 teams heading into March Madness. Where’s Alabama?

ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas has ranked his top-68 teams heading into March Madness. Alabama ranks highly on his list.

Alabama basketball is the top team in the SEC, after finishing with a conference record of 16-2, and an overall record of 21-6.

Currently ranked No. 6 in the nation, according to the latest AP poll, Alabama is set to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas has ranked his top 68 teams heading into March Madness.

Bilas has high praise for Nate Oats’ Crimson Tide, as he ranked them No. 6 overall.

“Don’t blink when Alabama has the ball, because it will be up toward the rim in a hurry,” write Bilas. “Also, focus your attention on the Tide’s defense. The SEC champs can really guard, and Alabama’s length and athleticism on the wings is impressive. Better still is the play of Herb Jones, a 6-foot-8 do-it-all forward who can rip-and-run, defend all five spots and fix any problem coach Nate Oats has on the floor. Alabama may be able to streak to a No. 1 seed as the Big Ten and Big 12 beat each other up.”

The Crimson Tide will first have to go through the SEC tournament before getting to the Big Dance.

Georgia basketball finishes the season with a 14-11 record (7-11 in the SEC) with Saturday’s 89-79 loss at home to No. 8 Alabama.

The 2021 SEC regular-season champions beat the Bulldogs 115-82 on Feb. 13 in Tuscaloosa, but Georgia played much better today in Athens, even leading 36-30 at halftime before being outscored 59-43 in the second half.

Georgia was led by sophomore guard Sahvir Wheeler, who finished with 18 points in 38 minutes and added 10 assists, extending the single-season UGA record for assists in a season to 180.

Georgia sophomore forward Toumani Camara added 13 points and 7 rebounds and freshman guard K.D. Johnson was the only other Bulldog to score in double digits with a 16-point performance off the bench.

With the loss today, Georgia has secured the 10th seed in the SEC tournament and will play the 7th seed on Thursday at 7 p.m. against an unnamed team.
