Titans’ injury report: Multiple starters sit out practice

The Tennessee Titans released their first injury report for Week 12 and see multiple starters on the sidelines.

The Tennessee Titans dropped a tough one on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings and suffered some damaging injuries in the process.

Heading into Week 12, it is already known that linebacker Jack Gibbens will be out and likely placed on injured reserve prior to kickoff. Gibbens suffered a devastating lower leg injury that required surgery on Monday. Since has not been placed on IR yet, he was a non-participant.

Running back Tyjae Spears (concussion) and linebacker Otis Reese IV (ribs) were also injured during that contest. Spears is in concussion protocol and did not practice, while Reese practiced and was not listed on the injury report.

Starting cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (quad) did not practice and is likely out for Week 12. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley, tackle Leroy Watson IV, defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day, defensive back Justin Hardee, defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, Cornerback Roger McCreary, and linebacker Kenneth Murray did not practice

Defensive Back Justin Hardee was limited with a groin injury.

Titans receive calls on multiple players, stand firm at trade deadline

The Titans received calls on three key defensive players ahead of the trade deadline but stood firm and kept their defense intact.

The NFL trade deadline came and went on Tuesday at 4pm EDT, and the Tennessee Titans phones rang, but no trades were made. Specifically, the Titans received calls regarding defensive end Jeffery Simmons, linebacker Arden Key and defensive end Sebastian Joseph-Day.

The Titans’ defense currently allows the least amount of yardage per game, and these three players have four sacks (Key), three sacks (Simmons) and 2.5 sacks (Joseph-Day) on the season.

The Titans, however, weren’t interested in dealing Simmons at all.

As for Key and Joseph-Day, if they were considering trades, no one offered the Titans what they wanted in return. Aside from their ability to get to the quarterback, both Key and Simmons have a fumble recovery this season.

This Titans’ defense is solid and is the only reason the team won over the New England Patriots on Sunday. It didn’t allow the Chicago Bears to score a touchdown in Week 1. And even with the loss of Ernest Jones IV, the defense seems to have gotten even stronger under Dennard Wilson.

Keeping the Titans’ defense intact signals that the Titans want to keep winning. They like the pieces they have in place and want to build on what Wilson has started this season.

Titans should trade for Bryce Young according to former GM

Former general manager Rick Spielman believes the Tennessee Titans should acquire quarterback Bryce Young before the trade deadline.

The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday and many believe that the Tennessee Titans will be front and center in the festivities that day. That wouldn’t surprise anyone, and after trading DeAndre Hopkins and Ernest Jones during Week 8, many expected the fire sale to continue in Week 9.

One former NFL general manager believes the Titans will be busy and the players involved might surprise. CBS Sports reporter Shanna McCarrison states in her piece that Rick Spielman proposed six trades that should happen before the deadline.

The Titans show up twice in the article with the first trade proposal impacting the defensive line. In his opinion, the San Francisco 49ers would trade for defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day.

With Javon Hargrave out with a bicep injury and the 49ers struggling against the run, the team could use a defensive tackle to help cover the loss. Spielman would try to trade for Titans defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, who would fit San Francisco’s scheme.

Joseph-Day has been solid for the Titans in 2024 with 19 total tackles and two sacks, and while he would be missed, he may not be in the long-term plans of the franchise. With general manager Ran Carthons’ familiarity with the 49ers, this potential trade proposal makes some sense.

However, the next time the Titans show up in this piece is a bit more of a head scratcher. Spielman makes the case that the Titans should trade for Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.

If Young is put in the right situation, he may be able to thrive more than he has with the Carolina Panthers. The Titans need to estimate where they expect to fall in this year’s draft, along with what quarterbacks could be available when they’re on the clock, to determine if selecting a signal-caller would be better than trading for one.

That take is interesting and does have some merit in theory, but the biggest problem is Young as the target. It’s no secret that Young has not lived up to the hype in Carolina, but with neither Will Levis nor Mason Rudolph finding success, would the results be any better? Probably not.

Spielman stated he wouldn’t break the bank, offering up no more than a fourth round selection, but that is still a bit rich for an unproven player who has struggled since entering the league.

While there has been quiet recently, deals can and will be made in the coming days and likely will be. What do you think? Let us know in the comments what trades you would like to see.

Rams should trade for Titans DT Sebastian Joseph-Day

The NFL trade market is heating up and the Rams should look to bring a former player home.

The Rams made a bold statement with their 30-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. Not only are they back in the playoff hunt, but they also knocked off a team considered to be a Super Bowl contender.

At this point in the season, injuries start to pile up and deals tend to get made. The Tennessee Titans may be undergoing a fire sale of veteran players, capped off by their trade of Deandre Hopkins to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Rams should make a move for their former DT Sebastian Joseph-Day as he would most likely cost nothing more than a sixth-round pick. He would add depth to the defensive line and he’s very familiar with the Rams’ defensive scheme.

It would also allow rookie Braden Fiske to focus his efforts on nickel packages, turning him into a much more effective pass rusher instead of continually getting hit when he lines up as a DE in Chris Shula’s 3-4 formation.

Joseph-Day is cheap, smart, and possibly available. For a sixth-round pick, he would be a steal—the type of steal that turns contenders into champions.

Former Rutgers defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day signs with Tennessee Titans

For the first time in his career, Sebastian Joseph-Day will not be playing for a team based on the West Coast. #Rutgers

Following a brief free agent tour, former Rutgers defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day has a new home. On Tuesday, Sebastian Joseph-Day and the Tennessee Titans agreed on a one-year deal, according to NFL Networks Jason McCourty. It marks the first time in his NFL career that the former sixth-round pick will not play for a California-based team.

Joseph-Day was a sixth-round pick out of Rutgers in the 2018 NFL draft.

Since making his NFL debut in 2019, Joseph-Day has appeared in 71 games and recorded 230 total tackles. In that span, he has added 11 sacks and two fumble recoveries to his resume. Regardless of the team, he has been a solid contributor.

After spending three seasons as a Los Angeles Ram, Joseph-Day switched zip codes in 2022 and joined the Los Angeles Chargers. Last season, he continued his tour of the Golden State, appearing in 14 games with the Chargers and two with the San Francisco 49ers.

On a Titans team with high expectations, the 28-year-old will be a valuable veteran piece. Joseph-Day has appeared in six playoff games and recorded 14 total tackles in the postseason. He recorded two solo tackles in three games for the 49ers last season.

While the Titans’ roster is mostly set, the addition of Joseph-Day adds needed depth. Their list of offseason acquisitions includes Calvin Ridley, who was the top wide receiver in free agency.

With Joseph-Day in the mix, the Titans have added another talented player to a roster with championship aspirations.

Titans agree to terms with DL Sebastian Joseph-Day

The Titans have agreed to terms with defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day.

The Tennessee Titans have finally made a move in free agency to bolster their defensive line.

According to his agency, the Titans have agreed to terms with defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day on a one-year deal, the financial terms of which were not immediately disclosed.

Joseph-Day visited the Titans on Monday. Here’s more on him from an article we wrote on the meeting:

A former sixth-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams, Joseph-Day has started in 68 of the 71 games he’s played in during his career.

In 2023, he appeared in 14 games with the Los Angeles Chargers before being waived late in the season and signing with the San Francisco 49ers. Joseph-Day tallied 36 tackles (three for loss) and tied his career-high with three sacks.

The Rutgers product offers some versatility, as he’s played defensive tackle in a 4-3, nose tackle and defensive end.

This was a much-needed addition for the Titans, who were very thin upfront following the departure of Denico Autry to the Houston Texans.

Joseph-Day isn’t the “wow” move we hoped the Titans would make going into free agency, but he is a big upgrade over everyone not named Jeffery Simmons in the defensive line room.

Tennessee isn’t done yet, though, as the team still needs another starter and could use more depth options.

Titans hosted DL Sebastian Joseph-Day on free-agent visit

The Titans hosted free-agent DL Sebastian Joseph-Day on a visit on Monday.

With the Tennessee Titans’ desperate need for help at defensive line, the team brought in Sebastian Joseph-Day for a free-agent visit on Monday.

The visit was listed on the league’s transactions wire, although there is no reported deal imminent between the two sides as of this writing.

As things stand now, the Titans have Jeffery Simmons and a group of players who figure to be backups, at best, in 2024, leaving Tennessee in search of two starters in a free-agent market that has dried up.

Broncos free agency: Updates for Sebastian Joseph-Day and Wil Lutz

Sebastian Joseph-Day and Wil Lutz are names to watch as the Broncos enter NFL free agency.

The NFL’s free agency negotiating window is moments away from opening and the Denver Broncos have been linked to a pair of looming free agents.

The first player is defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day, who “would welcome the Broncos having interest in him,” according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson. There’s been no word yet on if that interest is mutual, but it’s worth noting that Joseph also “considered signing with the Broncos in 2022,” according to Tomasson.

Joseph-Day (6-4, 310 pounds) spent the first four years of his career with the Los Angeles Rams before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022. He was cut by the Chargers last December and then signed with the San Francisco 49ers. The interior defensive lineman is now set to hit free agency.

Elsewhere on the free agent front, the Broncos are “continuing talks with impending free-agent kicker Wil Lutz,” according to Tomasson (and others). Chase McLaughlin just signed a three-year extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $4.1 million per season and it wouldn’t be surprising if Lutz is seeking a similar deal.

We will be tracking all of Denver’s free agency moves on Broncos Wire.

Only two former Rams are playing in Super Bowl LVIII, both for 49ers

Only two former Rams are on Super Bowl rosters this year, and both are on the 49ers

The Los Angeles Rams are home watching Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday after getting eliminated from the playoffs in the wild-card round, but two former Rams will be trying to win a ring in Las Vegas.

Surprisingly, there aren’t very many former Rams players on the rosters of the San Francisco 49ers or Kansas City Chiefs. Last year, there were three: Robert Quinn, Ndamukong Suh and Kendall Blanton.

This year, there are only two former Rams on Super Bowl rosters, and both play for the 49ers.

  • 49ers DT Sebastian Joseph-Day
  • 49ers QB Brandon Allen

Neither player is likely to play much on Sunday against the Chiefs, given their status on the 49ers’ depth chart. Joseph-Day only played 10 snaps in the divisional round and five in the NFC title game, while Allen is the third quarterback is will most likely be inactive behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.

Joseph-Day was cut by the Chargers in December and was signed by the 49ers, but he hasn’t had much of an impact on their loaded defensive line. He should still play at least a few snaps against the Chiefs, but don’t expect to see him all over the field the way he was with the Rams years ago.

This is the third time Joseph-Day is on a team appearing in the Super Bowl. He was with the Rams in 2018 when they faced the Patriots, though he was inactive for all of their playoff games. He was also with the Rams in 2021, though he missed the first three playoff games and then played just five snaps in the Super Bowl.

He’d love to win his second ring, but every Rams fan is likely rooting against him because he plays for the enemy now.

Chargers’ Giff Smith on Sebastian Joseph-Day’s release: ‘It was in the best interest of the team’

Gift Smith was asked about the release of Sebastian Joseph-Day.

After being waived just a week ago, former Chargers defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the 49ers.

At the time of his signing, Joseph-Day indicated that he was thankful for his release and the opportunity to play with the Niners. But he decided to keep any comments on what wrong in Los Angeles to himself.

Chargers interim head coach Giff Smith was finally asked about the surprise release at his Friday media availability.

It was a situations where myself and JoJo [Wooden], just in talking really, the easiest way to say is that it was just in the best interest for the team. Other stuff I’d rather just keep in-house, but we wish him the best. I hope he does well in San Francisco and that everybody moves on.

Certainly, that quote puts to bed the idea that the two sides were amicable at the time of release. Some had speculated that Joseph-Day asked for his release in advance to join a contender. But clearly as demonstrated by the friction between the two sides, that’s not what had happened.

Joseph-Day was signed to a three-year deal in the 2022 offseason with the team in Brandon Staley’s first big spending splurge as head coach. Staley brought in a few of his “guys” over the year from previous stops in the NFL.

With a new general manager and coaching staff coming in for 2024, it was unlikely that Joseph-Day had much of a chance to remain on the team. Especially when weighing his current production with the team’s own cap situation. The most optimal time to make the move may have been now.

Scott Matlock, Otito Ogbonnia, and other members of the defensive tackle room will have an opportunity for an increased workload in Joseph-Day’s absence. That will start with the Broncos on Sunday and a Week 18 finale against the Chiefs.
