Why Rams should pass on reunion with Sebastian Joseph-Day after Chargers release

With the Chargers waiving Sebastian Joseph-Day, should Les Snead look to reacquire the former Rams draft pick?

More shocking news came out from Chargers headquarters today when they announced former Rams defensive tackle and Super Bowl champion Sebastian Joseph-Day would be waived.

Joseph-Day, a six-year NFL veteran, spent his first four years in the league with the Rams. Drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Rutgers standout primarily served the team in his traditional run-stopping role. He would join the Chargers with former Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley and now with Staley’s departure, the Chargers seem set on ridding themselves of his hand-picked players.

Joseph-Day’s availability must definitely be discussed as the Rams, who have had to deal with a several defensive injuries in 2023, could use some much-needed veteran depth. Joseph-Day is familiar with Raheem Morris’ scheme but in the one year they had together, he only played in eight games due to injury, so one would have to account for an adjustment period if he returned to the Rams.

Here’s the cold-hard truth: SJD will be picked up by somebody. He started every game this year for the Chargers, he’s still an NFL-caliber run-stopper and he’s healthy. Acquiring talent of his level at this point in the season is rare and the Rams aren’t suited to bring him back.

If the Rams put in a waiver claim, they’d have to take on the remainder of his contract, which comes with a cap hit of $10 million in 2024.

Even if he clears, multiple teams will be putting in bids to get him on their roster. The only way the Rams should sign SJD is if he becomes a permanent practice squad player so the team has added depth in case of injury.

However, this won’t happen. Some team will put him in a position to get playing time, something the Rams can’t promise.

Despite his upside, the Rams should keep the status quo and pass on a reunion with Joseph-Day.

4 things to watch in Chargers’ matchup vs. Bills

Here are four things to watch during the Week 16 matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo Bills.

The Chargers host the Bills on Saturday in the NFL’s first Peacock-exclusive broadcast.

Here are a few things to keep an eye on for in the matchup.

Social media reacts to Chargers waiving Sebastian Joseph-Day

Here’s a sampling of the many responses to Sebastian Joseph-Day’s departure.

The Chargers waived defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day on Friday, the team announced.

Signed in 2022, Joseph-Day started 30 games for Los Angeles, finishing with 87 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception.

The decision to waive Joseph-Day, a team captain during this season, came as a bit of a surprise.

Here is how social media reacted to the news:

Chargers waive DT Sebastian Joseph-Day

The Chargers released a team captain.

When it rains, it pours. In Los Angeles, it is pouring.

The Chargers announced Friday that they waived defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, who had started 14 games this season for the team.

Prior to the 2022 season, Joseph-Day inked a 3-year, $24 million contract with Los Angeles to defect from the other LA team, where he had played under Brandon Staley. Staley was fired last Friday following a 63-21 loss to the Raiders on Thursday Night Football.

In 30 games with the Chargers, Joseph-Day had 87 total tackles, including five sacks and twelve tackles for loss. Los Angeles ranked last in the NFL in rushing defense last season but improved to 16th in 2023. He was also a frequent featured member of the Chargers’ social content.

Joseph-Day is the fourth departure from the Chargers in the last seven days. Staley and general manager Tom Telesco were fired last Friday, with defensive line coach Jay Rodgers also let go on Saturday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Friday that Joseph-Day is a potential addition for a playoff team down the stretch.

Chargers injury report: Alohi Gilman estimated as non-participant ahead of Week 7 vs. Chiefs

Ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Chiefs, the Chargers released their first practice report of the week.

Ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Chiefs, the Chargers released their first practice report of the week.

The Bolts only had a walkthrough Wednesday since they are only two days removed from their last game against the Cowboys, which means the report is simply an estimation of a player’s participation if they held a practice.

Aside from Raheem Layne, who was placed on the injured reserve with a torn ACL injury, Alohi Gilman (heel) and Deane Leonard (hamstring) were estimated as non-participants.

Joey Bosa (toe), Sebastian Joseph-Day (knee) and Amen Ogbongbemiga (hamstring) were estimated as limited participants.

Los Angeles will practice on Thursday and Friday before flying out to Kansas City.

Chargers DT Otito Ogbonnia working way back from knee injury

Otito Ogbonnia was spotted at practice on Tuesday working off to the side with a trainer.

It’s been nearly since Chargers defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia last touched a football field.

Ogbonnia, the 2022 fifth-round pick out of UCLA, missed Los Angeles’ final 11 games last year after suffering a ruptured left patellar tendon during Week 7 against the 49ers.

As a result, Ogbonnia began this season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Now that four games have passed, he is eligible to be activated off the list.

It remains to be seen when that time will come, but Ogbonnia was spotted at practice on Tuesday working off to the side with a trainer, according to NFL Media’s Bridget Condon.

It’s very encouraging to hear. Getting Ogbonnia back would give the Chargers a boost on the defensive line.

While he may not have stood out on the stat sheet, with 14 tackles and a tackle for loss in seven games in 2022, Ogbonnia was a reliable run defender by penetrating the backfield to cause havoc and occupying double teams.

We will continue to monitor the status of Ogbonnia.

Chargers defensive snap count leaders at the bye week

Taking a look at the Chargers’ defensive players who have seen the field the most.

With four games played and the Chargers on their bye week, I figured it’d be a good time to take a look at which players are going to benefit the most from this time to rest and recover before entering the final stretch of the season.

With that said, here’s a glance at the Bolts’ top-10 defensive snap count leaders after four weeks.

Raiders vs Chargers: 5 key matchups

5 key matchups for Raiders vs Chargers

Week four has the Raiders face their second division rival of the season. They slipped by with a 17-16 victory in Denver to open the season. This one proves to be a tougher task. And these matchups could be the key to whether the Raiders are able to get things on track.

Chargers HC Brandon Staley on Austin Johnson’s return: ‘He’s ready to play’

The Chargers’ defense gets a boost with the return of Austin Johnson.

The Chargers were riddled with injuries last season, and one of the key losses was of defensive tackle Austin Johnson.

Johnson suffered a fractured knee and MCL injury in Los Angeles’ Week 9 win over the Falcons and spent the remainder of the 2022 season on injured reserve.

Johnson was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after he passed his physical on Aug. 17.

“He’s ready to play,” Brandon Staley said. “He wouldn’t be active if we didn’t think that he could play. There’s probably going to be a certain amount of snaps that we kind of have projected for him. But he’s going to be full speed.”

Before he got hurt, Johnson was a cog in the middle of the defensive line. He was tied for the team lead in run stops with 14 and led the team in run stop percentage at 11.4%.

Having him back on the field will be vital as the Bolts look to improve their run defense from last season.

The Chargers finished 27th in the league, allowing 144.2 yards rushing per game. A lot of the damage came after Johnson and Otito Ogbonnia sustained their season-ending injuries.

Ogbonnia is still on the IR and will miss the first four games of the season as he continues to work his way back from his knee injury.
