Lions cut ex-Broncos linebacker

The Lions cut LB Kwon Alexander on Thursday. If he clears waivers, Detroit hopes to re-sign Alexander to the practice squad.

The Detroit Lions have cut inside linebacker Kwon Alexander, the team announced Thursday.

Alexander will now hit the NFL’s waiver wire. If he clears waivers, the Lions hope to re-sign Alexander to their practice squad, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Alexander (6-1, 227 pounds) joined the Denver Broncos in September after the team lost Alex Singleton to a season-ending knee injury. He was elevated from the practice squad to Denver’s game-day roster three times before being poached by Detroit.

Alexander, 30, appeared in two games with the Lions, totaling four tackles. Before that, he recorded eight tackles in three games with the Broncos. The linebacker tweeted this message on his Twitter/X page on Thursday:

Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, Detroit opened the 21-day window for receiver/returner Kalif Raymond to return from injured reserve, the Minnesota Vikings signed defensive lineman Jonathan Harris to their practice squad and the San Francisco 49ers added offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez to their practice squad.

Chiefs waive two undrafted free agents, sign one rookie minicamp tryout

The #Chiefs have released a pair of recently-signed undrafted free agents and signed an offensive tackle who was a tryout player at rookie minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made three roster moves following rookie minicamp.

It was a short stay for a pair of undrafted free agent signings as the Chiefs released Missouri State CB Montrae Braswell and Tarleton State OL Blake Haynes on Tuesday. Both players were among the group of undrafted free agents signed by the team just ahead of rookie minicamp. Haynes played guard during camp, while Braswell was an outside cornerback.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs signed Minot State OT Sebastian Gutierrez after a successful tryout at rookie minicamp. Gutierrez was a undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL draft. He spent the 2022 NFL offseason with the Denver Broncos, but was waived during 53-man roster cuts. He was later signed to the New England Patriots practice squad and finished up the 2022 NFL season on the Las Vegas Raiders’ active roster. He signed a reserve/future contract with Las Vegas, but was waived on May 1.

The 6-foot-5 and 308-pound offensive tackle played three seasons at the D-II Minot State, appearing in 31 career games with the Beavers. During the 2021 college football season, he blocked for an offense that produced 3,301 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns.

With the team only signing Gutierrez on Tuesday, but releasing two players, they’ll still have one vacant spot on the 90-man offseason roster. They could look to sign more tryout players from rookie minicamp in the coming days.

Raiders waive two to make room for undrafted free agent signees

Raiders waive two to make room for UDFA signees

Saturday, immediately following the draft, in which the Raiders added nine players, they went about signing undrafted free agents. By the time all the reports came in as to who the Raiders were signing, they were over the 90-player limit. So, Monday, they announced they had waived to players.

Getting waived to make room are safety Jalen Elliott and tackle Sebastian Gutierrez.

Elliott appeared in eight games with the Lions in 2021.

Gutierrez was an undrafted rookie for the Raiders out of Minot State last season. He was called up for one game last season, seeing two special teams snaps.

Both players had spent time on the Raiders’ practice squad last season and were brought back on reserve/future deals in January.

These cuts bring the roster, with draft selections, to 80, which means they will add as many as 10 undrafted rookies. Which, as it happens, is exactly how many showed up in our UDFA tracker.

Patriots make two roster moves, including release of preseason fan-favorite

The Patriots released two offensive players on Tuesday.

There was some roster movement on Tuesday with the New England Patriots announcing the releases of wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey from the 53-man roster and offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez from the practice squad.

Humphrey is obviously the name that stands out between the two considering he was getting playing time when the receiving corps was dealing with injuries. Things have obviously changed now with the returns of Jakobi Meyers and rookie second-round draft pick Tyquan Thornton.

The release of Gutierrez might actually signal the Patriots planning to sign Humphrey back to the practice squad. The 24-year-old receiver made some noise during the preseason, and he seems like a player they’d like to hold onto as an option down the line.

If not the Patriots, someone will surely be interested in Humphrey, who is unusually big for his position. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound wideout still has plenty of untapped potential that could possibly help the next team that signs him.

Patriots make depth signing at offensive tackle

The Patriots are replenishing their offensive tackle depth

The New England Patriots are adding depth along the offensive front with the signing of offensive tackle Sebastian Gutierrez to the practice squad, per NESN’s Zack Cox.

Gutierrez joining the Patriots comes at a time when Yodny Cajuste was placed on injured reserve. The corresponding move was Marcus Cannon being promoted to the 53-man roster for a second straight week.

Cannon stepped in and replaced Isaiah Wynn at right tackle in the second stretch of the Patriots’ Week 4 matchup with the Green Bay Packers. That could very well continue into Week 5 against the Detroit Lions, or Cannon could simply serve as a primary backup for the former first-round draft pick.

Meanwhile, Gutierrez slides right into the vacant spot on the practice squad for reserve depth.

The former undrafted free agent was waived by the Denver Broncos in August and has been looking for his next opportunity. He’ll find it in Foxborough with a Patriots team desperately trying to avoid a 1-4 regular season start.

Predicting the Broncos’ 5 upcoming roster cuts

The Broncos have to make five roster cuts by Tuesday afternoon.

After completing the first week of preseason, the Denver Broncos now have to make five roster cuts before 2:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday to get down to an 85-man roster. Here’s our quick prediction on five players who might be on the bubble ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

1. DB J.R. Reed: Denver is loaded with depth at safety and Reed might be the odd man out. Jamar Johnson is also unlikely to make the 53-man roster, but Johnson might be cut later in the process as a potential practice squad candidate.

2. LB Kana’i Mauga: The Broncos are thin at linebacker, but that doesn’t necessarily help Mauga’s case. Denver will probably sign a free agent to help replace the injured Jonas Griffith, and that will bump Mauga even farther down the depth chart.

3. RB Stevie Scott: The Broncos will likely play starters in Week 2 of preseason, so (health permitting), Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams will likely be available this week. Add in Mike Boone and Max Borghi and there might not been room left in the backfield for Scott. JaQuan Hardy is likely a cut candidate as well.

4. TE Dylan Parham: If Greg Dulcich is able to return from his hamstring injury this week, Parham might be the odd man out at tight end.

5. OL Sebastian Gutierrez: Denver has to start cutting some offensive linemen at some point, and Gutierrez is near the bottom of the depth chart.

The Broncos will make five more roster cuts next week before the final cut down to a 53-man roster following their third preseason game.

Broncos announce undrafted free agent signings: Meet the 13 players

The Broncos have signed 13 undrafted free agents. Learn more about each player here.

After selecting nine players in the 2022 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos then signed 13 college free agents to round out their roster for the summer.

The Broncos announced those 13 undrafted free agents on Thursday, officially confirming the signings. Here’s a quick look at each of the team’s new UDFAs.

Broncos undrafted free agent tracker: View the team’s UDFA signings

We are tracking all of the Broncos’ undrafted free agent signings on this page.

After selecting nine players in the 2022 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos have room for 10 undrafted free agents signings. We will be tracking all of the team’s UDFA moves on this page.

Fans should note that none of these signings are official until confirmed by the team. Sometimes players are invited to rookie minicamp on a tryout basis and mistakenly reported as UDFA signings. The official list from the team will arrive in the coming days.

6. NC State TE Dylan Parham (source)

Before the draft, Broncos general manager George Paton noted that this year’s UDFA class is deeper than usual because of COVID-19 extending college careers for many prospects.

“[The] free agent class will be a lot deeper,” Paton said last Friday. “Last year’s free agent class, I mean, we were done in about five minutes. … It just wasn’t as deep, so I expect there to be a deeper class in the later rounds and college free agency.”

Last year’s UDFA class included outside linebacker Andre Mintze, who is now a key special teams player for Denver.
