Former Dolphins RB signs with XFL team midway through the season

He spent part of the 2021 season with Miami.

While the NFL is in the middle of their offseason, other football leagues are playing each week, including the XFL which is in the middle of Week 7 of their regular season.

With a 5-2 record, good for second in their division, the Seattle Sea Dragons are bringing in a former Miami Dolphins running back to help during their push to the playoffs. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, they’re signing Phillip Lindsay for the remainder of the season.

Lindsay, 28, was originally signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons before suffering injuries in 2020 that dipped his production. In 2021, he signed with the Houston Texans but was released midway through the year, allowing him to be claimed by the Dolphins.

In four games with Miami, he rushed for 119 yards on 3.1 yards per attempt, but his strong running style caught the eye of fans. He wasn’t brought back the following offseason. Instead, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts, where he went back and forth from the practice squad to the active roster before being released in November.

If Lindsay can show out in the XFL, he may be able to find suitors in the NFL before the season begins.

XFL: Sea Dragons beat Renegades 24-15, win 5th straight

Seattle is as hot as the fire their mascot breathes

The Seattle Sea Dragons are as hot as can be in the rebooted XFL, and they kept their winning ways going with a 24-15 win over the Arlington Renegades. Seattle has now won 5-straight games following their 0-2 start.

It was a fine afternoon for quarterback Ben DiNucci, who completed 21-of-32 passes for 266 yards and one touchdown pass. While he did throw an interception, DiNucci made an impact with his legs, leading the team with 52 rushing yards on nine carries.

Although the Sea Dragons could only muster a field goal in the second half, their defense picked up the slack to defend their 21-9 halftime lead. Arlington only managed six points off one touchdown in the fourth quarter.

By nature of playing on Friday, Seattle has temporarily moved ahead of the St. Louis Battlehawks for second place in their division. The Battlehawks take on the South Division leaders, the Houston Roughnecks on Sunday morning, pacific time.

XFL: Sea Dragons defeat Guardians 26-19

Seattle pushes their win streak to 4-straight.

After starting the season with a rather inauspicious 0-2 start, the Seattle Sea Dragons are as hot as the fire they breathe, winning their last four consecutive games. Their most recent victim, the hapless Orlando Guardians, who remain winless after a 26-19 Seattle victory.

The Sea Dragons could not afford to overlook the Guardians, as they hope to keep pace with the St. Louis Battlehawks and DC Defenders ahead of them in the standings. Fortunately, Seattle took care of business.

It wasn’t the sharpest performance from quarterback Ben DiNucci, who completed 18-of-35 passes for 177 yards. However, he did have two touchdowns (against one interception) and threw one late when the Sea Dragons were only leading 20-19 late.

Unfortunately, St. Louis had little difficulty taking down the Vegas Vipers. The Battlehawks earned a dominant 29-6 victory over Sin City, and remain a half game ahead of Seattle in the standings thanks to a Week 2 win over them.

The Sea Dragons next game will be Friday, March 31st at 1:00 pm Pacific. They will take on the Arlington Renegades on the road.

Former Ohio State player making noise in XFL

Former Buckeye makes noise in XFL #GoBucks #XFL

We are through the first five weeks of the XFL 3.0. Though it has been a wild ride for the league, it has been fairly boring if you are an Ohio State football fan.

Typically spring and alternative football leagues are a great way to watch some Buckeyes you may have forgotten. But this version has only two former Buckeyes on active rosters.

Former defensive tackle, Antwuan Jackson, is having a decent season as a starter for one of the better teams in the league, the Seattle Sea Dragons (3-2). Former running back Rod Smith has been the starter in a time-share situation for the Vegas Vipers (1-4), who are not having the best season.

Despite being in a running back by-committee situation in Vegas, Smith seems to have separated himself from the pack this past week during a 35-32 victory over the Orlando Guardians (0-5). Smith ran the ball 18 times for 62 yards and two touchdowns. If those numbers don’t sound dominant to you, you have not watched this underwhelming Viper offensive line.

Smith is the sixth leading rusher in the XFL on the season with 166 rushing yards. With Vegas making some lineup changes, perhaps we could see Smith in the end zone even more.

Smith was at Ohio State from 2011 until 2014 when he was dismissed from the team in October of that season. Smith declared for the NFL draft and went undrafted, but he was in the NFL with the Seahawks and Cowboys from 2015 until 2021 before moving on to the XFL.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on Smith as he tries to make an impression in the XFL, along with other former Buckeyes in the league and the USFL that’s going to begin play this spring again soon.

Seattle Sea Dragons deal Houston Roughnecks first loss in XFL play

The Houston Roughnecks have finally lost in XFL play

It took two incarnations and 10 XFL games but the Houston Roughnecks have finally lost.

The Seattle Sea Dragons overcame multiple turnovers to down Wade Phillips’ team, 21-14 on Thursday.

The Sea Dragons surged to a 15-0 lead at halftime as their defense stymied the Roughnecks in the first 30 minutes.

Houston closed to within 15-6 in the final quarter but Seattle got a rushing TD to build the lead to 21-6.

Houston scored in the final minute of the game on a 47-yard Brandon Silvers pass to Justin Smith.

The Roughnecks went for the make-it-keep-it fourth-and-15 play with 24 seconds left. Silvers found Deontay Burnett for 17 yards and Houston remained alive.

On first down, Seattle was called for pass interference and Houston had the ball at the Sea Dragons’ 27 with 13 seconds left.

On the next play, Niko Lalos intercepted a Silvers pass and Seattle had dealt Houston its first defeat.

Phillips used his challenge, claiming a Seattle defender has used his hands to the face of a Roughnecks lineman.

However, Dean Blandino in the replay center ruled no such infraction happened.

DiNucci threw for a touchdown and rushed for one in the victory as Seattle upped its mark to 3-2.

“We love making these games interesting,” DiNucci said. “I’m a little upset with myself, three interceptions, four turnovers. We have to take better care of the ball.”

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback showed total frustration with the pattern former NFL star Josh Gordon ran after his final interception.

The Roughnecks were 5-0 in XFL II before the league folded due to COVID-19. They won their first 4 games in XFL 2023 before falling in Seattle.

Josh Gordon shines, scores game-winning TD in XFL Week 3

Former Titans WR Josh Gordon had a big game in XFL Week 3.

Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Josh Gordon is already making some noise in the XFL three games into the season, with his best game coming in Week 3 this past weekend.

Gordon and the Seattle Sea Dragons out-dueled Vic Beasley and the Vegas Vipers, winning 30-26. Gordon led the way for the Sea Dragons in receiving, with 118 yards and two scores on six receptions.

But Gordon was also responsible for the game-winning touchdown in the contest.

With one minute left in the fourth quarter, Seattle quarterback Ben DiNucci heaved a pass down the field that Gordon somehow came down with. He then proceeded to break free and take it to the house for a 65-yard score.

Here’s a look at Gordon’s first score.

Over three games in Seattle, Gordon has recorded 225 yards and three scores, with that yardage output being tops in the league. His 65-yard reception is the longest in the XFL this year, also.

As for Beasley, he recorded just one tackle in the losing effort and has seven tackles (two for loss), 0.5 sacks, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed thus far. His team, the Vipers, Gordon’s Sea Dragons are 1-2.

Josh Gordon’s absurd 65-yard TD for the XFL’s Sea Dragons was a thing of beauty

Is Josh Gordon back … again?

Former NFL wide receiver Josh Gordon is making the most of his time in the XFL.

After his latest attempt to make it with a pro roster with the Tennessee Titans fizzled out this past October, Gordon has been tearing it up with his first stint in the XFL with the Seattle Sea Dragons. The wideout has 343 yards and five touchdowns through three XFL games.

This past Saturday, Gordon hauled in six receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. One came on fourth down at the end of the fourth quarter and gave Seattle the victory over the Vegas Vipers.

While Gordon hasn’t been an impactful NFL player in quite some time, his XFL success hypothetically could intrigue teams to bring him in to compete in training camp.

It remains to be seen what will become of Gordon’s XFL boost, as he’s got plenty more time in the semi-pro league to show out.

He’ll be 32 by the time the 2023 NFL season kicks off, so time is ticking for him to latch on back with a pro team. However, if Gordon’s NFL career has proven anything, it’s that you can’t ever count him out.

If he wants it, yet another professional opportunity could become available.

WATCH: Ex-Patriot Josh Gordon hauls in 65-yard game-winning touchdown

Josh Gordon turned back the clock in the XFL on Saturday.

Former New England Patriots receiver Josh Gordon looked like “Flash” reincarnated in the XFL on Saturday.

He helped lead the 0-2 Seattle Sea Dragons to their first win of the season over the Vegas Vipers with a 65-yard game-winning touchdown. Make no mistake, it wasn’t just a one-and-done play, either.

Gordon dominated throughout the game by hauling in six receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. It was one of those performances that make you ponder what-if when it came to his NFL career. There was a time when Gordon was considered by many to be the best receiver in all of football.

A game-winner on a fourth-down is a remarkable feat for the former All-Pro wideout. The XFL’s existence is validated for fans getting an opportunity to still see other world-class athletes like Gordon go out there and compete.

It’s been a fun ride so far.

Josh Gordon catches game-winning TD for XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons

Josh Gordon made a spectacular play to win it for Seattle

This borders on unfairness.

The XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons earned their first win of the season on Saturday, thanks to a former NFL star.

Josh Gordon, who has had numerous suspensions during his time in the NFL, caught 6 passes for 118 yards and 2 scores. His 65-yard catch with about a minute left gave the Sea Dragons the 30-26 win over the Vegas Vipers.

The play from all sorts of angles:

Former Dallas Cowboys QB Ben DiNucci had a huge game, connecting on 29-of-37 passes for 377 yards and 4 TDs.

The Vipers’ Brett Hundley threw for 228 yards and a pair of TDs. He also rushed for 66 yards and a score in a losing cause.

WATCH: Josh Gordon scores three-point play for Sea Dragons

Josh Gordon is off to a fast pace.

Two weeks and two scoring touchdowns for a former wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns as Josh Gordon continues to show out for the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL. With new rules in the XFL, teams can opt to go for a three-point conversion after they score a touchdown from the ten-yard line. As Sea Dragons’ quarterback Ben DiNucci drops back to throw on this attempt, he finds a wide-open Gordon in the back of the endzone for the Sea Dragons. Seattle would go on to blow their lead against the St. Louis Battlehawks, dropping to 0-2 on the season, however.
