UFC 278 salaries: Kamaru Usman, Jose Aldo top list of disclosed payouts

Former champions Kamaru Usman and Jose Aldo lead the way with six-figure paydays in Utah.

UFC 278 payouts have been released by the overseeing commissioning body.

Wednesday, MMA Junkie received a list of disclosed earnings from Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission head Scott Bowler, which oversaw the Aug. 20 pay-per-view event in Salt Lake City.

Atop the list of payouts is former UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag], who pocketed $500,000 for his head kick knockout loss to [autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag]. Edwards earned $350,000 with his upset victory.

Co-headliner winner [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] earned $130,000 for his win over [autotag]Luke Rockhold[/autotag], who earned $200,000. Rockhold openly criticized fighter pay in the lead-up to the bout.

Former UFC featherweight champion [autotag]Jose Aldo[/autotag] took home $400,000 for a loss to [autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag], who earned $198,000.

Heavyweight [autotag]Marcin Tybura[/autotag] also pocketed $240,000 for his win over [autotag]Alexandr Romanov[/autotag] ($36,000) on the prelims.

Fighters from Saturday’s UFC 278 took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $226,000.

SALT LAKE CITY – Fighters from Saturday’s UFC 278 event took home UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance pay totaling $226,000.

The program, a comprehensive plan that includes outfitting requirements, media obligations and other items under the fighter code of conduct, replaces the previous payments made under the UFC Athlete Outfitting Policy.

UFC 278 took place at Vivint Arena. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ABC/ESPN and ESPN+.

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Venum’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $4,000 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,500; 6-10 bouts get $6,000; 11-15 bouts earn $11,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $16,000; and 21 bouts and more get $21,000. Additionally, champions earn $42,000 while title challengers get $32,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.

Woodson (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) evaded Anglin’s (8-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) early pressure in the featherweight matchup on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, the turned his tables on his opponent and started landing with the hands. Eventually, the output added up, and Woodson folded his foe with a nasty body shot for the TKO at the 4:30 mark of Round 1.

After the fight, Woodson said he was pleased with his result and felt he could expose Anglin to the body.

“I’m thrilled with it,” Woodson said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “I didn’t feel like myself in the first 10 seconds, but then I felt right into it. I’m so happy to get my first finish in here (with the UFC). I knew the body was going to be the way I finished this fight.”

UFC adds Collin Anglin vs. Sean Woodson to November event

UFC featherweights and Dana White’s Contender Series alums are set to collide this November.

A featherweight fight is the latest addition to the UFC’s November schedule.

On Nov. 13, [autotag]Collin Anglin[/autotag] and [autotag]Sean Woodson[/autotag] will meet in a 145-pound fight. The UFC Fight Night event does not currently have a location or venue announced at this time.

Two people with knowledge of the booking informed MMA Junkie of the matchup Wednesday but asked to remain anonymous as the UFC has yet to make an official announcement.

Anglin (8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) earned his shot in the UFC after a win on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2020. However, in his first fight with the promotion July 31, Anglin was knocked out by fellow newcomer Melsik Baghdasaryan.

In June, Woodson (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) bounced back from his first career loss, when he defeated Youssef Zalal via split decision. The 6’2″ featherweight fighter has three career wins via finish along with five decisions.

Alan Patrick could be looking at 180 days on the sidelines after getting poked in the eye at UFC Fight Night 189.

Patrick’s lightweight fight with [autotag]Mason Jones[/autotag] at the UFC Apex was ruled a no contest after an accidental eye poke rendered him unable to continue. Patrick must have doctor clearance for his left eye peri-orbital laceration before getting cleared to compete again.

On Wednesday, MMA Junkie acquired a full list of the UFC Fight Night 189 medical suspensions handed out by the Nevada Athletic Commission from MixedMartialArts.com, the Association of Boxing Commission’s official record keeper.

Also potentially facing six months on the shelf is [autotag]Ilir Latifi[/autotag] who claimed he suffered multiple arm fractures in his split decision win over [autotag]Tanner Boser[/autotag]. Latifi needs doctor clearance for his left eye hyphema and must have an MRI of his left elbow.

The third fighter also potentially benched for a while is [autotag]Sean Woodson[/autotag], who edged out [autotag]Youssef Zalal[/autotag] in the prelims. Woodson needs an X-ray of his left hand and an MRI of his left knee before getting cleared.

After a hot 3-0 start to his UFC career in just six months, Morocco’s Zalal has dropped back-to-back decisions to Ilia Topuria and, most recently, Seung-Woo Choi in February.

In his most recent outing in June, Dana White’s Contender Series product Woodson was handed his first pro loss when he was submitted by Julian Erosa at UFC on ESPN 12. Prior to that, the 28-year-old notched a unanimous decision win over Kyle Bochniak at UFC on ESPN 6.

Kai Kamaka has stepped in on eight days’ notice to fight Jonathan Pearce.

After [autotag]Sean Woodson[/autotag] withdrew from his scheduled Nov. 28 lightweight fight for unknown reasons, [autotag]Kai Kamaka[/autotag] has stepped in to fight Pearce (9-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on eight days’ notice.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Saturday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Pearce looks to rebound from an unsuccessful UFC debut in October 2019. After earning his UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series, Pearce was quickly finished by Joe Lauzon at UFC on ESPN 8 in Boston.

Kamaka (8-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) made his UFC debut on short notice at UFC 252 in August. He took on fellow newcomer Tony Kelley, whom he defeated in a “Fight of the Night” bonus-earning unanimous decision win.

Three fighters are facing 180-day suspensions as a result of UFC on ESPN 12 – but neither of the card’s headliners is among them.

On Tuesday, MMA Junkie acquired a full list of UFC on ESPN 12 medical suspensions from the Nevada Athletic Commission. Fighters can return sooner than the duration of their suspensions if cleared by a doctor.

Despite a back-and-forth battle for 25 minutes, [autotag]Dustin Poirier[/autotag] and [autotag]Dan Hooker[/autotag] walked away relatively unscathed. Both men received a 60-day suspension due to a “tough fight.”

The three fighters facing the longest suspensions are [autotag]Gian Villante[/autotag], [autotag]Brendan Allen[/autotag], and [autotag]Khama Worthy[/autotag]. All three combatants were handed potential six-month terms due to various injuries.

Villante suffered a hand injury in his main card loss to [autotag]Maurice Greene[/autotag], right after Allen sustained injuries to his nose and eye against [autotag]Kyle Daukaus[/autotag]. Allen’s manager, Brian Butler, revealed the extent of his fighter’s injuries in a post on Sunday. As for Worthy, the promotional sophomore injured both his knee and hand in a win over [autotag]Luis Pena[/autotag], according to the medical report.
