Giants sign FB George Aston to practice squad, attempted to claim LB Sharif Finch

The New York Giants have made a few practice squad moves and put in an unsuccessful waiver claim for LB Sharif Finch.

It doesn’t matter that it’s Christmas Eve, the business of the NFL must go on. It is Tuesday however, and that means they’ll be some player movement.

The New York Giants made a practice squad move on Tuesday, releasing punter Sean Smith and signing fullback George Aston.

Aston, an undrafted rookie out of Pitt, spent time on the Denver Broncos practice squad.

Earlier in the day it was reported the Giants put in an unsuccessful waiver claim for Tennessee Titans linebacker Sharif Finch, but he was awarded to the 1-14 Cincinnati Bengals.

Finch was born in Queens and played his college ball at Temple. He was signed as an undrafted free agent last year by the Titans.

Giants re-sign punter Sean Smith to practice squad

The New York Giants have re-signed left-footed punter Sean Smith to their practice squad.

The New York Giants announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed punter Sean Smith to their practice squad, filling the spot that was vacated when safety Sean Chandler was promoted to the 53-man roster last week.

Smith was previously with the Giants from October 31 through November 5, also then a member of their practice squad. He was used to prepare Giants return men for Dallas Cowboys punter Chris Jones, who is a left-footed punter.

Smith will serve in the same role this week as the Giants prepare for the Miami Dolphins and their left-footed punter, Matt Haack.

Smith was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of Dayton in August. He had previously attended their rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis.

During his college career, Smith was a four-time first-team All-Pioneer Football League selection and set a school record for punting average (45.4 yards) as a senior in 2018.
