Sean O’Hair goes from sage Steve Stricker to young gun Will Zalatoris at QBE Shootout

Steve Stricker, who won it with O’Hair in 2017, withdrew with a non-COVID-related virus last week.

Sean O’Hair went from quite the swing as a partner for this week’s QBE Shootout.

Steve Stricker, who won it with O’Hair in 2017, withdrew with a non-COVID-related virus last week. The 54-year-old was replaced in the field by 25-year-old Will Zalatoris, the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

“Obviously I was bummed that Stricker isn’t playing and I was looking forward to playing with him, but I couldn’t imagine a better partner than Will,” O’Hair said while playing a practice round Tuesday. “We don’t know each other very well, but I’m super excited to play with a young gun like that, and hopefully he’s willing to carry me around pretty good.

“He seems like a really nice kid. He’s got an incredible game and I’m looking forward to a good week with him.”

So it’s a bit of a change in philosophy for the 39-year-old O’Hair, who’s been paired with everyone from Kenny Perry, winning it with him in 2012, to LPGA Tour star Lexi Thompson in his 10 previous Shootout appearances. O’Hair and Kevin Na tied for second last year.

“With Strick, the thing is that you play with guys like that — I had that with Kenny even — you look at guys like that who to me are kind of my role models out here on tour or have been my role models,” O’Hair said. “I love how they carry themselves and I love their games. I think they understand their games. They don’t have maybe the most perfect action or they don’t have the most powerful games — I mean Kenny still hits it a mile — but it’s like they understand their games and they’re very good at what they do.

“I think Zach Johnson’s a very good example of that, a good guy, knows his game very well and gets it’s done. For me playing with those guys, I just learned a lot, just watching them play, and obviously being partners with them I enjoyed it immensely and it worked out well for me. I got a win out of Kenny and a win out of Stricker, so I’ve been pretty fortunate.”

Extra bodies: The pro-am once again added two teams on top of the 24 tour pros in the Shootout field, meaning two pros will be playing who aren’t in the Shootout. Founder and host Greg Norman will once again lead one of them, and Tour pro Denny McCarthy will be with the other team both days.

QBE Shootout: Steve Stricker withdraws, Rookie of the Year Will Zalatoris replaces him

The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year will play with Sean O’Hair.

Former QBE Shootout champion Steve Stricker has withdrawn from next week’s event due to a lingering, non-COVID-related virus.

PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Will Zalatoris has replaced Stricker in the 24-player field, and will team with Stricker’s scheduled partner, Sean O’Hair.

Stricker had withdrawn from the PGA Tour Champions Charles Schwab Championship earlier in November. He is the defending champion of the Chubb Classic, Naples’ Champions event that will be played Feb. 14-20.

Stricker is a former part-time Naples resident. He sold his residence in Quail West earlier this year. He was the captain of the victorious U.S. Ryder Cup team back in September.

Stricker won the Shootout in 2017 with O’Hair, and in 2009 with Jerry Kelly. He has played in the Shootout 12 times.

This will be Zalatoris’ first appearance in the QBE Shootout. He is one of five players in the field for the first time.

Zalatoris finished runner-up in his debut start at the Masters Tournament this spring and was tied for sixth at the 2020 U.S. Open. The former Wake Forest star began this season with no status on Tour, but had eight top-10 finishes and was named Rookie of the Year. He is currently 32nd in the world rankings.

The QBE Shootout will once again feature a scramble format during the first round, a modified alternate shot format on Saturday and a final-round better ball on Sunday.

Analyzing the 2019 QBE Shootout and which teams of golfers are the best options for the event. Who will win at Tiburon Golf Club?

Twelve two-man teams will compete in the QBE Shootout at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla., this weekend. The 54-hole event runs three days, from Friday through Sunday.

The first round is played under scramble rules, whereby both members of each team will play every shot with the better ball being taken each time. Round 2 consists of greensomes, where both players tee off on each hole and the alternate shot is played from the spot of the better ball.

The final round is played under standard four-ball rules with each golfer playing the hole on their own and the best score being taken.

Viktor Hovland-Matthew Wolff (+600)

The two combine for just 42 years of age, making them younger than several of the individual golfers in this event. Hovland is expected to be a top contender for PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, while Wolff came up just short of the award last year.

Hovland, 22, placed solo fourth at last season’s Wyndham Championship for the best result of his young career. He’s ranked 96th by the Official World Golf Ranking, while Wolff, who got his first career win at the 3M Open last summer, is 117th in the world. Their odds are lower as fan favorites, but the youngsters have the length and putting, and the motivation for the early-career win in an uninspired field.

Charles Howell III-Bubba Watson (+800)

Watson, ranked 44th by the OWGR, is coming off a last-place finish at last week’s Hero World Challenge. Howell, ranked 54th in the world, missed the cut at the RSM Classic as his last event. The two combined for four victories in 2018.

Howell finished tied for third here last year with partner Luke List. Watson was sixth with Harold Varner III.

Charley Hoffman-Kevin Kisner (+1200)

Hoffman also finished T-3 a year ago (with partner Gary Woodland), while Kisner finished last with playing partner Cameron Champ. Kisner tied for seventh at last week’s Hero World Challenge exhibition. The two have plenty of length off the tee, and Kisner, who’s the defending match-play champion, can get hot and carry the team with his putter.
