Pete Carroll says backup QB Sean Mannion is already up to speed

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said that backup quarterback Sean Mannion is already up to speed with Shane Waldron’s new offense.

The Seattle Seahawks recently signed former Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback Sean Mannion and coach Pete Carroll told reporters in his Monday press conference that he is already looking good in practice.

“We saw him in a workout about a week ago and he looked great,” Carroll said. “He really threw the heck out of the football.”

Mannion has previous experience with Seattle’s new offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron, as the latter served as the Rams’ passing game coordinator when Mannion played for them. Carroll said the signal-caller picked up the new offense relatively quickly as a result.

“His background with Shane, that he was with them [Los Angeles] is obvious,” Carroll said. “He’s really smart. Really smart. Austin [Davis] would tell you he’s been here a day and he’s already running the offense. He can already call the stuff. I don’t know how a guy can do that. Honestly, I don’t even know how a guy can do that. Because the terminology isn’t all the same. Conceptually, it’s the same, which he just eats up. So we’ll see what happens. Just liked him enough and then with that background I just think he’s an interesting guy for us to bring to camp.”

With Russell Wilson under center, it is difficult to imagine Mannion seeing the field in the regular season as long as the former is healthy. However, it is reassuring to know that Wilson’s potential backup is already up to speed with the system.

Seahawks sign veteran QB Sean Mannion, waive QB Danny Etling to make room

The Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran quarterback Sean Mannion and waived quarterback Danny Etling to make room on the 90-man roster.

The Seahawks announced a couple of personnel moves on Sunday afternoon during the players’ off day. Seattle has signed veteran quarterback Sean Mannion and waived quarterback Danny Etling to make room on the 90-man roster.

Mannion was originally selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Rams out of Oregon State and spent four seasons with the team. He then signed with the Vikings and provided depth for Minnesota the last two years.

Over his six-year career, Mannion started two of his 13 total games played and completed 45 of 74 passes attempted for 384 yards, three interceptions and no touchdowns.

In Seattle, Mannion will reunite with Shane Waldron, who was with the Rams during two of his four seasons with the club.

The Seahawks return to practice at the VMAC on Monday morning.

Key Vikings storylines from this week

Vikings fans, miss anything? Here are some of the key storylines recently:

With training camp in full swing, the Vikings have already made plenty of storylines for fans to keep up with.

Keeping track of every single thing can be hard, so Vikings Wire compiled a list of the biggest recent headlines, and some that people may have missed.

Catch up with a few of the key storylines:

Report: Giants likely to sign QB Sean Mannion

The New York Giants are likely to sign QB Sean Mannion, who worked out for the team on Friday, in the coming days.

The New York Giants hosted quarterback Sean Mannion for a workout on Friday and are now likely to sign the 29-year-old in the coming days.

Art Stapleton of USA TODAY and NorthJersey.com was the first to report on the potential signing.

Mannion was a third-round pick of the Rams in 2015. He remained with Los Angeles through the 2018 season and then signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 where he backed up Kirk Cousins.

In 17 career games (two starts), Mannion has completed 60.8% of his passes for 383 yards and three interceptions. He has a QB Rating of 57.5 and a starting record of 0-2.

With the Giants holding joint practices with the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns in the coming weeks, having a fourth quarterback on the roster makes sense. Head coach Joe Judge also likes to run simultaneous practices on multiple fields, so this addition would also help prevent one quarterback burning themselves out.

In addition to the Giants, Mannion also recently worked out for the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets.

Report: Giants to sign Alfred Morris, workout Sean Mannion

The New York Giants are reportedly signing veteran RB Alfred Morris and hosting QB Sean Mannion for a visit.

One day after visiting with their former wide receiver/special teamer, Cody Core, the New York Giants called in another familiar face for a look.

ESPN’s Field Yates reports that veteran running back Alfred Morris will be in East Rutherford for a visit next week. At that point, he is expected to sign, reports NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Morris, 32, was a sixth-round selection of the Washington Football Team in the 2012 NFL draft. He remained with the team for four seasons before spending two years with the Dallas Cowboys, one year with the San Francisco 49ers and splitting time between the Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals in 2019.

In September of 2020, the Giants signed Morris to their practice squad before promoting him to the active roster in November.

In 114 career games, Morris has gained 6,173 yards rushing and scored 35 touchdowns. His best season came as a rookie when he rushed for 1,613 yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

In addition to signing Morris, the Giants are also hosting quarterback Sean Mannion for a workout.

Mannion, 29, was a third-round pick of the Rams in 2015. He remained with Los Angeles through the 2018 season and then signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019.

In 17 career games (two starts), Mannion has completed 60.8% of his passes for 383 yards and three interceptions. He has a QB Rating of 57.5 and a starting record of 0-2.

With Zach Wilson unsigned, Jets will work out 2 veteran quarterbacks

With Zach Wilson still unsigned, the Jets will work out veteran quarterbacks Josh Johnson and Sean Mannion.

With Zach Wilson still unsigned, the Jets will work out veteran quarterbacks Josh Johnson and Sean Mannion on Thursday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With Wilson and the Jets haggling over offset language, New York only had two quarterbacks, James Morgan and Mike White, at Wednesday’s first training camp practice. Should the Wilson negotiations continue, Gang Green could need an extra arm in camp to take up some throws. That’s where Johnson and Mannion could come in.

Neither took a regular season snap in 2020, and Johnson has not since 2018 when he was a member of the Washington Football Team. Mannion attempted 21 passes for the Vikings in 2019.

The two quarterbacks have combined for eight starts in their careers.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer talks about the backup quarterback situation

The Minnesota Vikings have a backup quarterback situation that is currently not defined.

The Vikings have a defined starting quarterback in Kirk Cousins. What the team decides to do with the backup spot will be interesting.

It doesn’t seem likely that the team will go to free agency and land a notable backup. However, Minnesota could re-sign Sean Mannion. The Vikings could also go with Jake Browning or Nate Stanley. Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer said those three are all options.

“We really like Browning and Stanley. Stanley’s a big, big strong-armed kid. Browning’s been great the two years that he’s been here,” Zimmer said, via Chad Graff of The Athletic. “Sean’s been outstanding in the room. So, again, without saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this or that,’ there’s a lot of options there, I believe.”

It’d be great if the Vikings went out and landed a premium-tier backup who could possibly salvage the season if Cousins got hurt. That said, Minnesota has higher priorities this offseason.

Daniel Jeremiah lists QB Davis Mills as fit for Vikings in draft

In 11 starts at Stanford, Mills threw for 3,468 yards, 18 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

The Vikings have their starting quarterback, for better or worse, with Kirk Cousins.

The team is still looking for what could be next and who could back up Cousins in 2021 with Sean Mannion still being a free agent.

Daniel Jeremiah lists Stanford quarterback Davis Mills as a potential fit via the draft. Jeremiah says that Mills could be one of the team’s two third-round picks:

Mills is coming off a great pro day. He threw the ball well during his workout and is very talented. He comes with a small sample size, though, having made just 11 starts at Stanford. He’s had to overcome knee injuries dating back to high school, but there’s a lot to like about him. He can move around and is accurate. In fact, he reminds me of Minnesota’s current QB1, Kirk Cousins. I could see the Vikings as the landing spot for Mills in Round 3.

Mills’ numbers don’t jump off the page. In 11 starts at Stanford, Mills threw for 3,468 yards, 18 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

We’ll see if the Vikings decide to target Mills, or another quarterback during the 2021 NFL Draft.

Report: There’s ‘a good chance’ that Sean Mannion returns to the Vikings

Do you want the Minnesota Vikings to bring Sean Mannion back in 2021 free agency?

For the past two seasons, Sean Mannion has been the Vikings’ backup quarterback. Last offseason, the team elected to re-sign Mannion. Now that he is a free agent in 2021, it seems more than possible that the team will re-sign him again.

As reported by Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press, there remains a good chance that the team will bring Mannion back.

Mannion would presumably be the backup if he were to return to Minnesota, though there is a chance that someone like Nate Stanley or Jake Browning takes his spot.

The Vikings could also go and land someone outside the organization, but the team’s cap situation isn’t the best. With punter Britton Colquitt restructuring, Minnesota gave itself around $10 million in cap space. Most of that money would have to be allocated to draft picks and undrafted free agents, which doesn’t give the Vikings a ton of options for a backup quarterback.
